My first VR experience with Elite Dangerous and some difficulties

I have a theory on the less than 1 ss.

The device isn't capable of rendering full textures so lowering SS has less of an impact.

Increasing HMD always seems to have a large impact on visuals.

So lowering a low visual impact the same performance value as increasing the high visual impact nets a greater visual impact for the same performance value.

Yeah. As pseudoscience as it gets but it appears to make a visual improvement to me!

Follow the sage advice of Max Factor. Stop playing as soon as you feel the slightest queasiness. If you do that then you'll get your VR legs quicker than if you just force yourself through the discomfort.

And eat some gingernut biscuits before you play. They did a Mythbusters test on motion sickness cures. Ginger actually works!

I always advise to eat an Orange before any activity that make make you sick!!

Why an Orange??? It taste the same coming up as it does going down so you get double benefit! ;)

This seemed to be the common wisdom when I got my rift setup. I'll try your settings, perhaps lowering HMD a little for my 1070, and let you know if it looks any better/worse etc. It's all a bit subjective, I guess, as it's hard to actually compare results.

My CPU is i5 6600K (stock) w/ 16gb ram and the aforementioned 1070. So, we'll see how your settings go.

Well, that is interesting - I tried your settings nrage and I can't see any visual fidelity improvement, on my rig, with SS set to 0.65 and the HMD set to 2.0 everything appeared to look about the same, clarity-wise, compared to my previous setup of SS 1.0 and HMD at 1.5 - The HUD may have appeared a little less bright on your settings and I budged it up a notch.

However... I really do think there was a performance improvement. The planet I was on, with my setting shown in the previous post, ASW was locking at 45, but with your settings this wasn't happening and i was a locked 90. I thought id have a wander over to a planetary ring and try it there, on my settings and yours I was getting 90, so on your setting I budged shadows up to ultra (to achieve the self shadowing rock effects etc) and on my previous settings ASW kicked in, but on yours it sat at 90.

So, next I checked a station, here, with shadows at Ultra on your settings ASW certainly did kick in, however, going back to my low shadows setting on your parameters i was back at 90 in a station, on my previous settings that wasn't happening at all.

It certainly seems 'smoother' but I will need to do some more testing to see if what I appear to be getting above is consistent, but on first glance... top banana!

I was 'testing' in solo, in a Krait, if that makes any difference. Other than the HMD, SS and shadow changes, nothing else was changed from my original settings.

Thanks for posting, it'd be interesting to know if others have a similar experience or whether what I was getting was a fluke of my system in a snapshot in time.. more testing this weekend.

Oh.. and OP, I did suffer with motion sickness, definitely in the SRV (still can't play in that for hours) but you do adjust, as others have suggested, take it slow, don't force yourself, it does take a little to acclimatise to, but once I got my VR legs, there's no way i'd go back to playing ED on a flat 2D screen, no matter how crispy it looks!

:)

Playing after you start to feel motion sickness is training your brain that it is okay to feel that way. Take breaks, get a fan to blow on your face, drink water, and switch to 2d for a while after you start to feel sick. Avoid the SRV for the first few days to weeks and get used to everything else first.

Glad to hear they were well received.

I tried your settings and my poor GTX 1070 (with i5 6600K) did not like them at all :( Lots of dropped frames and other glitching, which surprised me. So, I spent the last few nights trying to profile things with nVidia FCAT VR but it didn't really tell me all that much. I even ended up overclocking my i5 to 4.2GHz (from 3.5) which is a fairly mediocre result from what I can tell but the only stable 4.4GHz overclock I had hit 89 degrees! I may need a new case and/or cooler.. plus it's pretty warm here in the UK at present. And.. gone back to my settings, where things at least run more or less stable. I was also in solo, in a Krait. Let me know what results further testing brings.

Windows 10 had some sort of creators/Xbox record feature that needs to be turned off. Search this forum for instructions. It is a likely candidate.

Thanks! I found and disabled the Game Bar. Game DVR was already set to NOT record in the background.
