My HP Reverb G2 settings for Elite dangerous

Please forgive my ignorance here, I've not had a VR headset since I gave my Oculus Rift DK1 to a good home several years ago.

Following the death of my laptop GPU I have just ordered a new desktop PC (with what should be more than enough oomph for a VR headset).

I keep seeing references to "SteamVR" and suchlike - why? Has something changed in the intervening time between "early Horizons" and now that requires additional third-party software, or does it perhaps only apply to people who run ED using Steam?

It depends on which VR Headset you purchase.
If you choose a quest 2 then it launches from from the Occulus/Meta Software ( No Steam VR needed )
If however you have the Reverb G2 or any other WMR Headset then it loads via Steam VR ( Free software from steam )
I have a REverb G2 and Elite runs perfectly fine from Steam VR.
BTW i still use the settings listed by the OP and it performs very well in Horizons. (odyssey is a different kettle of fish )
Just out of interest, What GPU is in your new PC ?

The new PC will have an RTX3080 12GB (CPU: i7 12700k). As far as I could tell from reading articles and posts (some of which date back of course to the less optimized days of Odyssey) that should be plenty and then some.

I'm spoilt.
3090fe g2 reverb. Runs lovely in very high res. Clear as a bell and I've just recently added sharpening (nvidias own) to it which does make a difference. More clarity. Had to enable blur to tone it down a tad lol. Getting 70+fps 90% load on gpu with cpu ticking along in the green at 10% or so.
Gpu temp never goes over 70°.
CPU at about 50 to 55°.
And not too noisy either.

You can actually bypass SteamVR using something called OpenComposite, and we're finding that Odyssey performs much better with some additional tweeks. Check out this thread for a bit of a convoluted discussion.

I'd like to share with you my experience and settings for Elite Dangerous using this marvelous headset.
First of all i'd like to say i haven't seen ED in VR like this before with any other headsets, i had an Oculus DK2 and CV1, tried few others from friends but i would say there's no match, G2 is a step forward.

My Rig is working with I7 7700k 4.8 Ghz, Rtx 2080 OC and DDR 4 16 GB rams.

To disable virtual monitor pre-allocation:
  1. Launch Registry Editor
  2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Holographic
  3. If the PreallocateVirtualMonitors REG_DWORD is not present, create it by selecting Edit > New > DWORD (32-bit) Value and entering PreallocateVirtualMonitors as the name
  4. If the PreallocateVirtualMonitors REG_DWORD is present (or you just created it), double-click the entry and change “Value data” from 1 (its default value) to 0 (zero)

Edit Windows mixed realy for SteamVR config file to enable thanks to HeavyGroovez on this forum:
Motion smoothing will not do anything it is native to the SteamVR runtime not the SteamVR for Windows Mixed Reality runtime.

You need to enable WMRs own motion vector reprojection.
\Steam\steamapps\common\MixedRealityVRDriver\resources\settings\default.vrsettings

Code:
// Motion reprojection doubles framerate through motion vector extrapolation
// motionvector = force application to always run at half framerate with motion vector reprojection
// auto = automatically use motion reprojection when the application can not maintain native framerate
// disabled = turn off motion reprojection
//
// Comment out or remove this line to use the SteamVR settings for controlling motion reprojection
"motionReprojectionMode" : "disabled",

change it to enable

Hi Trepidor Huge thanks for taking the time to put this together, i know your thread is fairly old now, but wandered if i could ask some questions?

1. Edit Windows mixed realy for SteamVR config file to enable thanks to HeavyGroovez on this forum:....Where is this Please?
2. OK found this file (\Steam\steamapps\common\MixedRealityVRDriver\resources\settings\default.vrsettings)...... but mine looks like this, so what should i change??...
"driver_Holographic": {
// Motion reprojection doubles framerate through motion vector extrapolation
// motionvector = force application to always run at half framerate with motion vector reprojection
// auto = automatically use motion reprojection when the application can not maintain native framerate
// none = turn off motion reprojection
//
// Comment out or remove this line to use the SteamVR settings for controlling motion reprojection
"motionReprojectionMode": "none",

Everything else i can fathom out....Except my 'Shadow Quality' in ED Profiler is greyed out and stuck on Low??

Many thanks and if you are in a position to revisit this to assist me get the experience you are getting.

Thanks Muchly

Thanks for sharing your config!

My specs:
  • ASUS TUF Gaming A15 (AMD Ryzen 7 4800H with Radeon Graphics, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060, 64 GiB RAM)
  • Anker PowerExpand 11-in-1 USB-C PD Hub
  • HP Reverb G2 (revision 1)
  • Microsoft Windows 10 Pro
I've made all of the suggested changes to Elite: Dangerous Oddysey 4.0 starting from the VR Ultra preset, with the following exceptions:
  • Model draw distance is set to half.
  • Directional and spot shadow quality are both medium.
  • Galaxy map quality is high (loads my custom high-resolution galmap config).
  • Jet cone quality is high (untested).
I'm not sure the motionReprojectionMode setting is right given the comments in that configuration file. I might change it back to auto.

I'm very happy with the visuals but only really tested them in flight near my fleet carrier, various stations, and a haz RES. Halving the model draw distance was key to good performance in my case. Otherwise, the game would drop frames a lot, possibly due to less video RAM in the 2060 compared to the 2080.

Thank you so much for this.
I just bought a nearly new model of this unit and I had no idea how to set it up.
Now, thanks to you Trepidor, I am so impressed that I have actually abandoned the Thargoid war and gone exploring.
The planetary features are just amazing.
The fine detail of the rocks, the geysers, the fumaroles and the flora.
SRV or on foot movement is very smooth and I love just sitting in the posh interior of my Gutamaya built ships.
Stations can be just a little bit laggy and jaggy. But I never spend much time there anyhow. Only to R, R and R, get missions and cash up.

Rig: Intel i9-900 water cooled.
32 GB RAM
M2 NVME SSHD
NVIDIA 3080 water cooled.

The game is a joy to play now.

Trying to follow this great guide, but i have a few (issues/questions) if i may please:

In the ("motionReprojectionMode" : "disabled",) My setting was "none", so it was not at Disabled. Am I ok just to add "Disabled" to this setting?

In the Steam VR Setting section, under Application video settings for Elitedangerous64.....I do not have the option for Elite Dangerous at all, just some Steam VR stuff and Microsoft Flight Sim?? How do i ADD Elitedangerous64 to this list to make these changes??

Kindest Thanks for your dedication to helping get the best experience from our headsets.

U have to have the game running in VR to see the options in Steam VR.

My suggestion with the current version of Steam VR and WMR for Steam VR is to enable the retroprojection only in WMR for Steam VR ( the little icon on the Steam VR bar ) and disable in Steam VR.

Curious what tweaks you made? I'm looking to do this as well with the Reverb G2, just not sure what's still relevant towards the end of 2023 here. Any input would be greatly appreciated!
