I've already produced a simple spreadsheet to list how I could use this device for a number of games I play. Indeed, in Elite it would be a fantastic macro board.

The main motivation right now though, is for ESO. The way I see it, the keys that have arrows on them can used for, well, WASD movement. As for the 8-way D-pad? Skill casting. The big 20 key under the D-pad? Ult casting. An added plus is that it uses exactly the same type of key as my keyboard.

This device would massively reduce the workload on my left hand fingers, and move the casting work to my thumb.

Honestly I can't think of a better compliment to my MMO experience. Plus, as it's Razer, the same brand as my main keyboard and mouse, not only can I have fun with synchronised lighting, but I can also manage all devices under one simple UI. (Having used Synapse for a few years now, I must say I quite like it)

Do you have one of these? What do you think of it?

I use one of these. i have all my keymaps and macro's configured for multiple games, colour coded and at the press of a button.
Great bit of kit.
Works well for ED, everything neat and tidy.

Logitech G13

I have a previous generation. It's kind of nice in some situations and kind of awkward in others.
One of the problems I have is that the keys are in columns. If you're used to a normal keyboard, that screws up your muscle memory pretty bad. The D-pad on the old versions was really sensitive and without adjustable dead zones so it couldn't be used like you plan - you wouldn't be able to cleanly "press" just one spell.

That being said, I always liked the ergonomic design (I use it for playing on laptop in bed and it's super comfortable) and the new one is probably much more customizable when comes to general use.

Seems like what I already have with a CH Pro Throttle, only without the throttle axis and with more awkwardly placed buttons.

G13 isn't being made anymore but I finally found a refurbish that wasn't being sold for the price of a major organ.
Found the g19 companion app as well. Configured it and now I don't have to use the actual keyboard for anything but typing messages.
Mostly I was looking for it for the analog stick, which works great. No more digital lateral thrusters.

I have that very game pad by Razer. I don't use it for elite, but I do for countless other games. You can set up three different layouts for any game and call them up at anytime.
Once you get it. You will never go back to the keyboard and will stop playing if it breaks until a new one arrives.
The wife and I have been using Nostromo and Razer since the ealy 2000's.
Just my take ye know.
If ye don't. Were gonna have Mr T come by your house and yell.
I Pity Da Po Fool who doesn't buy a Razer Tartartus V2.

What is your experience with the D-pad on this generation?

Sensitive or..?

@Chris Simon my problem with keyboard for ESO is I can't move while casting or vice versa because I just cannot get my fingers to do both at the same time like many people can.

I desperately need to get my thumb managing either casting or movement and leaving my fingers to dedicate themselves to the other task.

On a regular keyboard I just can't do that, because my fingers lock up, literally, trying to move between casting or movement.

With that said, I'm also open to instead getting a Razer Naga. I like this mouse because it has a modular design, allowing you to switch the side buttons between two, seven or twelve buttons.

Yeah, Razer Naga is definitely awesome piece of equip for MMOs.
The way I deal with casting on the move is that when fighting, I'm usually either kiting, or circumstrafing the enemy. So I strafe left with my ring finger on A and am able to use the 3,4,5 quickfire binds and the E and R skills and when I need to use the Q, 1, 2 keys I strafe right
I didn't try to say "don't buy it", I just deemed it fair to point out that selecting the spells with the thumb D-pad WILL prove to be tricky.

What would you say of binding the D-pad to movement?

I have a number of theory-crafted layouts. Been making spreadsheets in libreoffice to help me decide what the best purchase will be.

That could work, of course. You're an ex-Xbox guy. You are used to using your thumb for movement. You'd just need to get used to the new hand position. :)

See that's exactly why the Tartarus is so attractive to me.

I've been using my thumb for movement for literally 22 years, ever since I got given a PS1 at the age of three: The controller was a stick model.

Now I'm not saying "traditional" WASD/casting is impossible, but when you're fighting against a literal lifetime of mental training to the contrary, it's bloody difficult!

I can deal with the hand position. I had to do that when getting used to a HOTAS, and that was still relatively recent: I didn't like it at first because it flet weird, but the reason I was able to master it is because I can dedicate all my extremities to a single set of keys and "jobs".

As I say, my problem with regular keyboard is that MMOs are just asking too much of my left fingers. Asking me to move and cast? Yeah it just doesn't work for me because of my enormous gamepad time.

But a thumb-based D-pad is basically exactly the same as a gamepad on a console. Different hand position sure, and that will take some getting used to, but the core idea is to get my movement digit separated from casting. I'm certain that this is the solution because I can DPS on a static dummy in the guild house. And I can explore towns while not needing to enter combat. But I can't do real battle on keyboard because my fingers try to do everything out of necessity. My thumb is currently sitting idle; basically a wasted limb. If I can reassign movement to my thumb, I can leave my fingers to cast and cast alone.

I want to play with mouse and keyboard, or keyboard type device, because as much as I love gamepads, they do not last. Their sticks go loose, until you can't really move properly due to mechanical failure. Keyboards just last. Not to mention I'd like the benefits of mouse based rotation for PvP.

I have an Ideazon Fang gaming pad.

I have had one for at least 10 years and it is a dream to use in shooters. It really makes a difference. This thing definitely is not a gimmick!
It is a very old fashioned simple thing. No leds etc, I would love a modern one with backlighting, and I have a few ideas about how to make a few other improvements too.

Sadly Ideazon was bought by Steelseries, and subsequently all their best products got canceled. Very weird and unforgivable.
I hate Steelseries for that. I succeeded in buying a second Fang, now 2 years ago, because the first one broke.

I hate to think about what to do when this one eventually breaks down too. The Fang is the best and most used peripheral I ever bought.

That's pretty cool. I like it. Shame it's not really available now.

Yes, that really is a shame.
This thing is super practical for FPS.
Originally it came with easy software that made it completely programmable and you could use macros too.
The software has not been updated in 5 years or so, and I don't think it works in Windows 10 at all, but luckily you can use it without drivers and software too. You do lose the extra functionality.

I would buy a modern version with rgb lighting without thinking twice. I would even buy an unaltered version if I could get one, just to have one in reserve.

I also have this Ideazon Keyboard. It has the pad build in.

It's good to know the potential use of such devices.

I will be getting the Razer model in any case, for two reasons: Shares exactly the same type of key as my Ornata keyboards, and given my current choice of mouse and keyboard, it makes sense to get a device that directly links with my other devices via Synapse, meaning I only have one device customisation software to use. (I know a lot of people hate on Razer Synapse for requiring Internet, but considering most of my games are online-only, that's a non-issue for me)

I've used many versions of the Razer Keypad. I do have the one you asked about now
and have used it since it came out. Love it. I really only have 2 profiles, 1 for VR and one Non-VR,
I just bind most keys in-game. the real only change jI made is I bound ESC to number 03 on the pad,
that way I rarely touch my regular keyboard ( Steelseries APEX 150 )
I have used and still have the Logitech G13, but stopped using it ages ago, Personal preference
but I never liked the way the keys are arranged.
My 2-cents.
PS I also have the same keypad I use for the PS4- I'm a mouse-keypad guy.. lol

I will be getting the Razer model

I use it's predecessor, the Belkin n52te, myself and I love that nifty little keypad.

This is how I've configured the blue keymap. Haven't used the others maps yet, as that tends to get confusing, but they are bound to Key_1 through Key_0 and Key:Minus (red keymap) and Key:Numpad_1 through Key_Numpad_0 and Key_Numpad_Decimal (green keymap).

Should be self explanatory, but ask if you have questions.

Theese are my ED bindings for the n52te. Just to make the obvious painstakingly obvious, the greens are the key modified with Left Shift, while the reds are the key modified with Left Alt
n52te_binds-png.144507

The rest is bound to my Joystick, with a few keys here and there on the main keyboard.

Edit: Changed the keys om the blue page from the NumPad to the function keys, as that made more sense inside the weird place that is my mind.
