General / Off-Topic My On-Going Meta Ballache

I am currently acting Head of Department for Computing in a school in the UK and I inherited a bit of budget (even after getting all the next year stuff) so I thought it would be cool to get some Quest 2s.

We can use them in the curriculum but I was also hoping to use them for our revamped sports day. We have tried to be more inclusive by adding esports to the events, for those who aren't into sports and/or might not be able to compete for whatever reason.

Anyhoo. The in-house IT department tried to create the five Meta Facebook accounts but immediately ran into problems because Facebook decides the school email address must be bots.

Dan is the IT guy who has been doing his upmost to set up these accounts. Apparently it takes Meta 24h to reply and Dan has sent photos of himself and his phone, in the school setting, with the Quest app to prove he is not a bot.

Success! One account makes it through their system so we purchase a couple of apps. (Sport day is fast approaching as it is this coming Monday so we need to get on it so the devices are ready in time.)

Next day (today)
The Facebook automated system now decides the account that we bought the two full price apps (from the Quest App indeed) really must be a bot, so has locked it again!
They have blocked a 'bot' that has just spent £35+ on the 'fake' account.

Dan was well flustered by that bombshell!

Meta is a wonderful thing

Although it’s not much use for your sports day, as from next month the Facebook requirement for Quest headsets is being dropped - existing FB-linked accounts and new accounts can be changed to a Meta account, essentially a new version of the previous Oculus account.

Update

Yesterday, the Q2s were collected from Currys (a bit of another story there).

The account with the apps was unlocked by Meta and as soon as we activated the device, the other accounts unlocked! And it all became plain sailing.

I reckon the issue arose because we made the accounts in advance - so we could get everything sorted whilst we waited for the HMDs (that other story I mentioned that I won't bore anyone with) in time for sports day. I guess the automatic system, once it detected a Q2 through the same data channel switched us to the non bot camp.

Still don't know why the system blocked the account after we had bought Beat Saber and Space Pirate Trainer from the app?

Whatever, it's looking good for Monday :)

Thanks for letting me share!

When I was at school the computer room was full of bbc micros and some rm research 380z
It also must have had the higher budget of the school.

If I had said then that in hour life time we would have more computing power in our hand with smart phones than some of the biggest room sized computers at the time they would probably think you were crazy.

I think we had a copy of elite on floppy Im sure there could have been an educational argument for it
and Grannys Garden.

This is were I first learnt to program although I also started learning at home.
Sometime teachers from other departments but drop by with envious looks and sit and use some software or 'game' like the economics teacher.

The computer course was the only real motivation for getting to school tbh

But yes I did play real sports
