Horizons My opinion about planet landing and exploring.

This is precisely the matter of the topic. There's so much things on the list... will they really be able to deliver before everyone leaves to play a newer and better game?

But, hey, this post is just my opinion as a game-maker, and a pack of ideas to make it easier and quicker to achieve a final product.
The devs will do what they will, no matter our posts, yet, everyone's feedback is important.

Regarding the Asp-X bug, it's probably a ship specific problem. By checking the view camera, one can see how low the landing gear is. And I've been able to avoid the SRV drop bug by checking this camera before deploying it.

I cant see any newer and better games on the Horizon at the moment. The Star Citizen Persistant Universe looks like a long way away, I would say at least 2 years from now for the full release. Are there any other games coming that will be better?
Season 3 I would expect anywhere between March and June next year (I could be wrong on this).

The Dev teams for Planet Coaster and ED are different groups, so no worries there.

As for Planet coaster, a lot of the tech in that I can see being used for ED. I believe they have a third Franchise coming which is believed to be something like Planet Zoo. Tech from that I can see being used for planets with life.

So for me it's all good at the moment. I would prefer they take their time and do things well, instead of rush and do things badly (i'm looking at you Powerplay).

Well, if they want a third fanchise as an economic and planing thing I'd prefer 'Coriolis Station Manager' over 'Planet Zoo' [big grin].
Can imagine a lot of options in a Station including Zoos and Roller Coasters. But also political deals with factions and more.

Miklos

Personally, not something I want to see. But we all have our own likes and dislikes.

The whole planetary landing thing is well done. All I've done so far, is prospect, kill skimmers, and steel cargo.

Still haven't done the datapoint mini game yet. I agree about prospecting... cool at first but quickly becomes annoying.... only do that when absolutely necessary.

You got my hopes up for a new Zoo Tycoon, so unless you like the rebuy screen you had better hope it happens.

They made it this far, so why doubt them now?
Because that's what the video game community does

As a very long time player of Eve (since day on for release!!) I can tell you that CCP (Eve devs) definitely have screwed big time on a few occasions.

Having said that one of the main reasons EVE has been going for as long as it has was that there wasn't any other way to get you massive space 'world' fix until recently.

Elite is not perfect but it is still developing like Eve did back in the day (Hell it's effectively a different game now) so I wouldn't worry that the devs for Elite are looking at way of making it more 'fun' for everyone who wants the Elite experience these things take time thats all. Be patient. And if you can't be patient then a ridiculously big space game like Elite probably isn't for you.

ME1 planetary drops were fun? Those square maps? Those minigames for unlocking a slab of resources? Those POIs with always the same assets? Overly cragged terrain to navigate the Mako?

Well, it was OK at it's time, but it's definitely not what would pass in an open sandbox game.

Hell no. Don't get me wrong I'm a big fan of Mass Effect (and I really must finish ME 3 sometime) but this game? Hello? Sandbox yes.

As for the OP:

I played all the original Elites and I love planetary landings and all that in this game. I actually like sinking time into exploring (try doing a couple of thousand LY's. Unless you are insane and want to sit at a computer for 20-30 hours straight try getting to Jaques sooner than in a couple of weeks).

These threads are basically a "I don't like doing it this way which justifies the whole game needing to be changed for me" threads.

I've been playing games probably longer than a lot of people on these forums have been alive and anyone who knows anything about game development realises this current Elite develops in stages and by iterations (and we are expecting another today!).

So perhaps we get aliens. Perhaps we get atmospheric landings. That will come when it comes and it will be what FD decides (with respect to the massive amount of listening to the community that they do).

Combat? Yes.

Pirating? yes.

Trading? Yes.

Exploration of a massive stellar database? Yes.

C'mon OP. I want to see a sandbox for everyone not just any particular chosen few. I could never land on planets in the original Elites and, quite frankly, this rocks and, at the moment, the possibilities seem endless.

Open world=open mind.

I really think something specific to your install is borked. I haven't had problems with the SRV dropping through the surface, and haven't read of anyone else experiencing that, either.

The Asp specifically is very low compared to other ships. In fact it can be possible to get trapped.

It would be helpful to know which planets specifically you are seeing this problem with, then it can be checked out.

I have had clipping from time to time. Not much! Not often! Not many ........ wait a min! I have had it happen in lots of different places.
Stations, ships (that frightened me) but mostly when I try to planet land.
I have my setting on the game max. Powerful system! I don't care about all the clips. They are small! Most games have them. Lucky if you never see them.
I have all Borderlands, all STALKERs, all Sacreds, Wicher3 Skyrim, and they all have clips. Live with it unless it spoils gameplay. Losing your SRV might be one of those times.
Yeah. Mass Effect games as well.

You gotta remember that all those things to pretty up the game come at enormous cost and enormous programming time.

I agree with all of this. Take your imagination with you, indulge and try to not play it just as a game. Much more rewarding.

I too consider ED a space sim in its infancy, rather than a videogame per se. David Braben clearly has a lot of love and passion for Elite Dangerous otherwise he wouldn't have made several attempts to revisit the 'universe' since the original game (which I played on BBC Micro B I might add, in keeping with other parts of this thread).

I have confidence that the slow burn approach they are taking is exactly for the reason to ensure it doesn't suddenly die out due to rushed, bad implementation of features or mechanics (looking at you NMS, although I hear good things are coming). As others have said, they have a roadmap (could be over several years for all we know) and they clearly have ideas for A LOT of content in the meantime (who would have predicted passenger missions at the release of Horizons?).

Sure, it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea and the beauty is that people are free to choose whatever game ticks their boxes. Even if some players abandon the game now through boredom, who's to say they won't return in future as more and more is added? I myself took a break a little after Horizons released and was attracted back with all the mysterious revelations around unknown probes/artefacts/barnacles/etc. The beauty of an open sandbox game is that you CAN dip in and out, you don't have to commit to it all the time forever at the expense of any other game (I played a bit of NMS, until it deleted my save and I lost all my progress; I'll probably give it another blast once Hello Games has added more depth too).

I had the fortune to meet David Braben many years ago and was quite honoured and thrilled at the prospect. I couldn't resist asking him about the future of Elite (this was post-First Encounters), to which he replied that he would ilke to revisit it one day. Well here we are, he was true to his word so I don't think it's going to be abandoned anytime soon.

Have faith Commander, or just play something more immediately rewarding in the meantime and check back here from time to time... :)
