My rare comodities run, and how I do it.

I thought I would share my current rare trading experience, in the hopes that I see more people out in the routes. I view rare trading as the intermediate trade routes between a hauler, and affording the big ( type-7 and up) cargo ships. Once you get bigger than a type 6 or Asp, it starts to become more profitable to find a good trade route locally, as your credits per hour can be significantly higher than doing the rares circuits.

I never did rares in Beta or Gamma, I was too busy playing pew pew in my cobra. When I got into my Asp, I thought that it would be a great way to see the galaxy, and have fun doing it, vs grinding out trade routes. I am all about having fun instead of grinding, and this seems to do the trick for me.

So for starters, here is my Ship: Asp explorer, swapped out the class 5 shields for a class 3 which gives me an extra 24 tons of cargo space, a basic exploration scanner, 2 beam lasers and 4 multicannons, and am currently in a class 5B FSD. Fully laden, I get 19 and some change jump range on a fully laden (116 tons of cargo space) ship.

Here is my trade route: http://eliteraretrader.co.uk/?route=83,51,52,72,62,23,66,6,84,31,81,73,67,19,97,3,43,71,8,58,83&name=Tronicus%201 ETA: if you change the pull down bar from "furthest away" to "First over" a second box appears, and you can set your distance to trade the rare. I set mine to 140 LY, and this helps spread out the sell points.

It is a 21 system loop. The way it is laid out, I never run out of cargo area, and I get pretty close to full before I get to a big sell station. I just got done with the first loop, and I put a little under 1.5 million in my pocket, as well as a few upgrades for my Asp. I estimate that if this run were milked, it would do 2+ million per lap.

I do not wait on ticks to accumulate rares. I buy what is available in station, then I take a look at the galaxy map and plan my next leg. If I pass thru any inhabited systems close by, I will use the trading tool to see if there is a nice run between where I am and the next stop. Most of the time I only get a few hundred cred profit per ton this way, but every now and then I get a sweet one to the tune of 900+ per ton profit. I fill up what cargo space isn’t being used by my rares, so I can load up anywhere from 10 to 80 tons of cargo depending on where I am in the circuit.

I also take a look at the bulletin board, and see if there are any mission headed the same direction as I am. If there is I pick them up and do them. This ads a lot of time to my route, but I am not in a race to complete the loop, it builds rep along the way, and pads the pocketbook to boot.

Now if it takes me longer than 5 or 6 minutes to do all this, then I will wait the extra 3 or 4 minutes for a tick to complete, and grab more rares while I am there. It seems that I do this about 50 percent of the time.

I make sure I scan every system I go into, and that helps pay the bills also. I would guess on this first lap, I made about 10k exploration data. I only scan at the sun, I do not go explore and scan the rest of the system. If I get interdicted, I throttle down and see what is up, so that way if I have to, I can afterburner and run to a jump faster than if I did not submit.

Playing the way I do, this route took me about 4 hours. The time could be shaved by a LOT if all you did was pop into the station, buy your rares and continue to the next one. My guestimate would be about 1 million cred/hour if you just wanted to grind.

Playing with the rare trader tool, you can plot a course that will work to maximize your cargo capacity if you have a smaller ship. If you plan your route for max amount you can have, you do not have to worry about selling early and can maximize use of your cargo space.

Anyone care to share their routes?

I have to ask: doesn't this simply remove all challenge from the game? Tools like that are a no-go for me as they essentially remove all risk-taking and take out the element of surprise. In short, they remove the fun.

Of course sharing it is commendable, but I just worry that if too many get addicted to these types of tools, boredom will quickly settle in and drive folks like yourself out of the game prematurely....

Great post Tronicus, I have just upgraded to an Asp and was a bit at a loss what to do with it. I have tried my hand at most of the moneymaking ways in the the game, and want to continue to switch about to keep the game intersting.

So a trade loop like this looks good for a bit of combat in anarchy systems and exploring more of the galaxy while keeping a hold full of rares as I am going along. Seems a great idea.

I see now. So the breakdown for a 4 hour loop is approx 500k an hour? Seems low, but I may try this out. Are there any outposts along the way? I am in a Type 9.

Whether a tool makes the game boring or not is very dependant on the personality of the person. For some, the task of locating a decent trade route is a chore that gets in the way of the process of carrying cargo that they enjoy. These people will benefit from the existance of tools like Slopeys and that in the OP.

For others, the process of finding the trade routes is a large part of the fun. For these people, using those same tools will detract from the experience of playing the game.

The solution is easy - the first group use the tool, the second group don't.

Elite is not a game where the rate of acquisition of credits compared to anyone else is important. Providing that you make enough credits to support your desired play style and desired purchases, there's no issue.

Well put. I'm certainly going to give this run a try now, as I'm currently stationed in Leesti.

Keep in mind that I am not out to maximise profit/hour. If you just ground this route, I would estimate about 1mil/hour profits. If someone does the grind on this route, I would like to see the verified numbers on this. I am doing what I enjoy, and making decent money at it. My intention is not to just grind out credits, it is to dabble in a little bit of everything and make some decent money on the side. If you look at the systems, it names which station you need to go to, and some of them are obviously not suited for a large pad ship. The only way to lay out a route to prevent a landing problem would be to look at each system map and see what kind of station it is. As far as I can recall, there were very few that could NOT land a large pad ship.

You can also filter how far away from the NAV point a station is in the upper right hand corner. I stay under 100,000 LS to reduce travel time in system.

Katkon, I use these tools to play the game the way I want. Having played the old elite games till my eyes bled, I am unconcerned with getting burned out. That is also why I run missions, and even do a little bounty hunting along the way. I do whatever I feel like doing, I just use this rare route as a general path, vs staying in one small cluster of systems and doing the same thing.

It's a 39 station route, run in a Type-6, and generally with 104 cargo you can sell all cargo for max (or very near max for a few) and not run out of space. I don't have numbers yet on how long it takes to run and how much money you'll make, but suffice to say a few hours of play on this route was several million in revenue, so it's not bad at all for the Type-6. As the OP mentioned, the discovery data picked up on the first go-round also is a nice boon. I do use a fuel scoop occasionally, but the fuel costs don't eat all that much into profits in this ship. It's mostly about how much time you want to sit around stars scooping at 75units/sec during this long trip.

PM me if you want my current take on the sell points for this trip--or go join EDNA and go browse the forums there, since we discuss this route almost daily and have more detail about it there: Elite Dangerous North America/

Happy trading, Commanders!

Edit: why so long? We want to ensure stations fully refresh their allocations of rare goods between return visits, something that was not happening with our shorter rare routes. Besides, we get to see more of the galaxy this way. :D

The problem with not using a tool is the UI data is horrible, and often times incorrect. Brand new to the game, and the first two items I picked up that a system next door should be importing only to find out they have a high supply. ... Maybe the trade data should reflect that???

This game needs some kind of native tools in the UI. Trading in 3300 I should be able to get my hands on a LOT more data than I can now, and also it should be up to date instantaneously.

People wouldn't use third party tools if they had tools in game to do these things. All the tools are doing is removing tedium.

I have a similar but shorter route taking in many of these systems but am struggling to fill my type 6 now I have upgraded so nice to have a few more stops.

Dont forget epsilon indi, momus reach and fujin

This was my first lap, and I am taking notes on where in the loop my available cargo space is excessive. I am going to add points where I thinkI can squeezr more in. Ideally, by halfway through the loop, you are almost fully laden, and just drop off and pick up, staying at almost full as you go around the loop.

wouldn't it be nice to see what was available to buy and the prices to sell without having to dock...sigh

what's that thing you can get these days, oh yeah...radio!

in fact, as soon as you enter the system the data should download to you're ship automatically without going anywhere near any stations. Hell, i can see how much anything is anywhere at the click of a mouse right now so 3300....

I use this very helpful spreadsheet from dragonic (thank you very much):

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1haUVaFIxFq5IPqZugJ8cfCEqBrZvFFzcA-uXB4pTfW4/edit?pli=1#gid=0

which i found in the also very helpful thread from Patau82 https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=63119 thank you too

Simply search for 'low dist' systems by color. I fly something like Leest, Lave, Diso, Orrere, ... some more systems in vincity ... then I fly the same systems again, to get near the spawnlimit of each rare. After that I do the long route. Mostly from Leesti to Fujin. Same near Fujin with 5-7 systems and after that back to Leesti. I make about 1.5 mil with every long trip.

It really is worth it to spend the time and come up with routes that work well, theres some real money to be made if you want to.

Radio only works at the speed of light; we're travelling faster than that remember.

Actually that explains why information is out of date system to system, but you'd think you could get it when you're only light seconds away?!
