General / Off-Topic Nagging question...

So I hardly ever use my laptop.

I once had a computer that I hadn't plugged in for so long it said something about the internal memory or batteries failing, whatever.

So so I leave the lappy plugged incase I want to use it. Should I just unplug it and it will hold the charge or is keeping it plugged in of any benifit?

this might be the stupidest question going on the interned but for now the little LED glows at me and I think am I wasting money?

for the record I waste money all the time, I'm useless but the laptop bothers me. Please help CMDR.

Very sensible question.

The issue is the battery which serves to hold the settings for the BIOS. If that battery fails, those settings disappear.

Actually, it rarely has any significant effect apart from one issue, the Time Clock, which is alos reset to the date of the BIOS Manufacturer. When that is reset, it makes updates almost impossible and can cause problems connecting to some ISPs.

I once had to suffer a dead battery on my last PC for over a week for various reasons. As long as I remembered to set the date each morning, it was generally OK,

The problem comes with replacing a battery in a Laptop. Some have a small hatch undernieth, other the batter is inside. Those that have the hatch under, it is often covered with a ticket saying void if removed or some such nonsense.

Having said all that, I have laptops which are only turned on every few months and have not problems with them so far. One of those is over 10 years old, a tiny thing which runs an obsolete version of Linux.

Two different things here.

Motherboard batteries are easy to change as found in your old computer.

Laptops should only be plugged in when you are using it. This will prolong the battery pack's life.
