Naming our ships, how should it work

"Oh. Well, it's okay with me because I just ignore it so that means you guys must have issues. "
What kind of messed up logic is that?
Just because people find a ship/Cmdr name offensive and would like rules implemented preventing it, does NOT mean that they have a problem.

Sexualised/rude/disrespectful/racist/bigoted ship/cmdr names should be removed from the game with extreme prejudice, imho. I personally do not want to encounter any of the aforementioned types of names when I play. It lowers the games value and maturity level in my eyes; it paints the entire game with a dirty brush. I do not want my game experience ruined (no matter for how short a period of time) by some silly little prepubescent whose maturity level extends to toilet humour and whose naming conventions tend to rotate around their manhood, usually of a misogynistic nature.

I don't have a problem... *twitch*

It's not a messed up logic. It's just a game.

Maybe not messed up but little backwards.

Ask it this way,

"What does it add to my game experience to have offensive words in the game?"

Some people will find certain words very offensive, and although I can't think of many that would offend me I know people who would find certain words deeply offensive. How would it improve your game to see a black type 9 called "Big N..."? For some that would be an understandable deal breaker.

And let's not forget that there are kids who play this game who's parent may be less than impressed by some of the more creative names some of us could come up with!

Not to be too blunt but it's not all about you ;). And while it may not stop you fully enjoying the game it will utterly ruin it for others.

It does need some curator-ship unfortunately.

It doesn't matter that it's a game, a players name can be extremely offensive to some people. Why do you think so many games have a naming policy?
Your attitude of "oh, it's fine with me, it's just a game, you need to get over it" is not only callous and but shows a complete lack of understanding of the issue.

In a free to play MMO that I played a while back, someone had named their character "WomanRa..." I'll let you fill in the blanks.
I cannot begin to express how offensive that was.

Since FD lets us name our CMDRs, and apparently have no problem filtering profanity, I can't see why one permanent name per ship wouldn't work using the exact same filter. Is it the character limit?

Edit: permanent for the life of that ship. When destroyed or sold it disappears. I changed my mind about my previous comment.

I'd like ship names to be free. Ship naming is a fundemental right of being a CMDR surely?

You should have the option to change it whenever you're docked.

Somewhere there should be history of your ship's name so you can do Culture type gags.

Really long ship names must be supported.

The name should appear on the outside of your ship, even if it's too small to see in anything other than debug mode.

These are my demands!

Oh, and there's no place for phobic or bigoted names. Space may be dangerous, but there no excuse for being a bellend.

There are CMDR names out there they have not been able to be moderated. I would like ship names but some people in this community (not all) have proven they cannot be trusted without moderation or full supervision. Last thing I would want to see is in ED is how many people find creative ways to to find new words for rectum in their ship name, or how many use a name of a big phallic nature. Please FD as much as I would like to see ship names it would become a nightmare if added

make the naming of any in game single ship a payable expensive DLC ( like 15$ ) for that price you can pay someone to check them before approval and are sure that people will thimk twice before requesting something stupid. it will also give another optional income stream to frontier which isnt bad

Name your ship how you want. If everyone names their ship the Millenium Pidgeon then so be it.

I think however players will be more creative than that. Especially considering the wide range of ship names available from the Culture novels that i'm sure will be a favourite with many here.

I'm partial to A Slight Case of Overbombing

Which is a Culture like ship name and the name of a Sisters of Mercy album.

In fact, a lot of Sisters songs would make good names for Culture ships.

I read a lot of comments about how to handle offensive names. Why making a rules for offensive names in the first place? I mean, it's just a name for a ship. If you can't get over a ship name in a game, then I think you have some problems...

If someone would come up with a name like "Phuk dat Bich", I mean, how does that prevent me from fully enjoying the game? How likely is it going to be that I will see this ship in the game? And if I was to see it, I would just think that a moron would name a ship with a name like that... But, that's just me.

It can be reported. If we see a player in game with an inappropriate name, we report it to FD Support who contact the person and ask them to choose a different name.

Same can be done for ships as well.

Someone keeps doing it, then they can always have the naming privledge removed, or sent to the shadowban server for a few days.

interestingly enough I got attacked by an NPC ship today. A Viper which was flown by the infamous "Dik Bots".

So I would think the rude names and double entendres are not only limited to players.......

No need to shadowban. Just revoke naming privilege and name their ships something funny and embarrassing. Black Pear would do nicely for example.

Hello there

I think game devs should not be so quick to assume we players will "only" abuse a mechanic.

Yes, there will always be a twit or two but their actions must not be allowed to sully the rest of our enjoyment.

Many other Sims allow customisation in the form of skins and I've rarely seen anything offensive in my gaming years in that respect.

As stated, it's not hard to keep users in line given the correct tools.

I've always been a supporter of giving the player as much customisation as possible to enhance their attachment to a game.

@agonyaunt your taste in music is impeccable.

I name all my ships, indeed i have a fleet prefix, but i do it in the only places i can ... inara.cz fleet page and my own fan-fic

They could have some kind of approval process. When you submit a name for your ship, it is put into some database table and a notification is sent to someone at Frontier. At the end of the day, they can run a little script that will find the obvious. They can then quickly scan the list and remove the offending names. All others are then approved and the name you chose appears on your ship after a few hours or maybe the next day.

And you're posting your comment from an account named "Lucifer Hate"? As a fervent catholic, that's a little offensive to me...

As far as moderating names is concerned I'd be quite content with a valid "report reason" being "offensive ship name" - if you're offended by a ship name, report the cmdr. If FD agree the name is offensive, then the ship name is redacted and the cmdr notified to choose a different one. If FD don't agree it's left alone. Possibly also with a policy in place by FD to sanction folks with a history of frivolous reports.

As for how it could work technically, there are many ways to convert a text string into a graphical layer that could be rendered on the hull in the same way decals are incorporated now. In a truly complete solution (if FD have the time available to implement it amongst fixing more important and intrusive issues) we'd have an option to select fonts or maybe incorporate small graphics too - as far as the render is concerned, once it's composited into a graphics layer it's just pixels anyway. How this would fit into the UI, I'd suggest it being part of the livery tab under outfitting. At it's simplest it's text-only in a preset font, rendered in the same color as a regular decals primary color. You enter the name of your ship in a text box, it's sent to FD's servers where it's composited and then rendered on your ship as a decal. As an option the text of your ship name might be visible to other cmdrs in the HUD when your ship is targeted but displaying it on the hull would be the preferred choice if only one could be done.
