EDIT: Update - ED runs like pure love on the new Oculus software released March 28th 2016. Perfect! Thanks, Frontier!

Bump ^ I am really interested also if this has been worked out, I would like to once again enjoy this game in VR, but I don't want to have to spend the next week figuring out how to jury rig it so I can.

seems to me to work with 0.8 straight off the bat.

What is happening is that as long as SteamVR is installed, then the game will see the (Steam) wrapper and activate it as needed and use the Oculus SDK.

If you do not have SteamVR installed, then it will not see the HDM (nor the SDK).

Ok, interesting. Does this mean that we have purchase Elite Dangerous Horizons via Steam? I'd prefer the non-Steam version, but if the only way to make it work is through Steam, so be it. Does this also pertain to a non-Steam installation of ED (not Horizons) ?

No need to buy this on Steam but you need SteamVR installed and run the setup there or it will be facing the wrong direction. It runs fine just by running the ED launcher and then choosing the HMD Speakers/Headphones option and you get to see it on your other screen also, which is a good result for those of us who like to record.

Running the 0.8 runtime for clarity here.

Does this mean that the SteamVR program needs to be running first prior to running ED Horizons?

No. It merely needs to be installed via Steam/tools.

Horizon will see that it's installed and will activate (run) it is it is not running.

I have runtime 0.8 installed and got ED working using Virtual Desktop.
Don't need to start Steam VR and don't need to switch the runtime if I use Virtual Desktop.

My Monitor can only 60Hz. Because of that it's a judder fest if I start Elite Dangerous from Virtual Desktop.
But I can use Virtual Desktop and turn the Monitor off. Works great using Virtual Desktop and the game detects the HMD if it was starting this way.

1. Start Virtual Desktop, after that turn the monitor off if it don't support 75Hz.
2. Start Elite Dangerous using Virtual Desktop, now you don't have judder and game was loaded on the Rift with 75Hz. If you want you can turn the monitor on again after game was loaded.

Using Virtual Desktop it seems that it don't need Steam VR. I start it without Steam VR and it works.
If you go to the Nvidea settings after point 1 you will see that it shows now the Rift resolution with 75Hz and not the monitor.
After the game is loaded you can turn the monitor on again. The game will be judder free with 75Hz until you exit the game.
It only needs to be started with Virtual Desktop running, if monitor don't support 75Hz turn it off before you start the game.

nvidia 780ti, latest drivers, oculus runtime 8.0, and steam vr installed. I'm getting extremely bad performance and/or judder in horizons with vr. my main display is set to 1920x1080 75hz (can go up to 120hz). everything else that can be used with 8.0 runtime runs fine, as usual. after looking around this seems to be a rare issue with some users. horizons runs silky smooth in non-vr, even in small to medium settlements surprisingly. i tried oculus runtime 0.5, and it works. unfortunately i want to be able to cast in vr but also have the ability to capture the mirror window (normal view) for my viewers, so 0.5 (dual image fish eye mode :D) is not ideal for that. i feel this is definitely a software issue and hopefully gets ironed out soon. ill try cogents virtual desktop workaround and report back.

This is not working for me.

Can't get it to work, Elite runs on the screen inside Virtual Desktop.
I'm launching the Elite launcher from inside the virtual desktop program, not getting any options about HMD in Elite graphic settings.

Could you in more detail specify the steps?

Best 0.8 supported game yet, playing at 2x super sampling maxed everything, freakin gorgeous!

Finally can enjoy my favorite VR Space Sim. The wait has been long but worth it!

Using steam VR, I had to change the refresh rate of the HMD in the graphics settings. It defaulted to 0 (God only knows what it was actually runing at. less than 60, maybe about 25-30?) Once I changed it to 75hz it was smooth.
I'll add that my monitor only supports 60hz, so this was better than the workaround posted on reddit.

*EDIT* if you land at a surface port, CLOSE YOUR EYES for about 20 seconds. The judder there is initially insane and almost made me feel nauseous.

you changed the refresh rate in elite or steam vr? if theres refresh rate settings in steam vr im not seeing them. the only thing i see when launching steam vr is a laggy grey room on the HMD.
