Newcomer / Intro naval progression, combat stabilisers ?

I saw a mission to advance my naval career, I didn't accept it because it was vague, it just said, 3 combat stabilisers. Not go here and find them, not go there and deliver them, just the commodity and the number ??

So where are you supposed to find these things ? there was only an hour for the mission, but I went to the navigation map and looked for medicines and went to a few of those places locally and found no combat stabilisers, so I probably wouldn't have been able to find them anyway.

So how are you supposed to track down these commodities ?

Well, you have to either find them in space, or buy them somewhere.

Use your map filters to find where specific commodity is sold. You can turn on the trade routes and filter out everything except the one you need, then you will see systems from and to which the commodity goes. Then check a system map of said system and find the station that has your commodity in "Exports" column.

My recommendation for now it not to do the missions asking for combat stabilisers and wait for easier stuff, e.g., non-lethal weapons.

All fine and good but if you turn it on specifically from the galaxy map, the damn thing lies to you. You don't neccessarily find them in the place where galaxy map tells you they're supposed to be in.

These missions are a test of your mettle, you have to show initiative etc., to prove you're a worthy candidate for promotion.

What is so difficult with combat stabilizers? I had this mission, went to the galaxy map, found the system, flown there, bought them, that's it. These are just medicines as I remember.

It doesn't lie it's just badly designed, first of all you can look only for one commodity at a time which is just painful if you accepted 7 missions at once. Other thing is the position of your cursor when browsing galaxy map also matters, you need to be able to see all the neighboring systems to get complete information, because if you miss even one of them that may be a system from which the selected system imports even though all the other lines are export, so just to make sure you need to "look around" to generate all possible trade routes. Bad design, very bad design...
I see you can filter out a commodity group ( like medicine ) but not a specific commodity or am I missing something ?
Medicines for example have a little arrow next to them, you can click it and the list with specific commodities appear so you can further filter them.

What makes it so difficult is that combat stabilisers do not show up anywhere on the map navigation view. and the places that they are not illegal never have any in stock. Basically there is no way to tell where might have them or not. plus these missions tend to be like within 45 mins or something. Which leaves you only about enough time to guess wrong maybe 2 or 3 times depending on how far stations are from each other and nav beacons.

I would love to take them on but it seems like you are on a mission that will fail. I have been to a lot of places, and I always check for combat stabilisers so I can grab and few and just have them in my hold. But I have never seen anywhere selling them that actually has stock.

I'm sorry but the map is broken to hell and back. It DOES lie. It will tell you a station has or sells a product and it does not. It will tell you it buys a product when it does not. It will tell you it there is no route to a destination and there is. And so on. FD is aware of the problem in their words and they are working on it. It has been a problem since day one that I entered beta and is still to this minute a problem. Yes I would still try the map if you want as it is better than nothing. But do not hold your breath that it will be 100% correct.

That's how I approached the combat stabilizers or personal weapons requests early on. I noted that these were the regular requested items for early naval progression missions from the bulletin boards (be it Empire or Federal) but like you hadn't encountered any in my travels. As I expanded out further into the galaxy and started doing a bit of rare trading & exploring in combination, I started happening upon these lovely needed commodities and like you're planning, I picked up a few to have the next time I saw the appropriate posting on a bulletin board. It works, just like most aspects of the game, you just need a little patience, 'tis not a game meant to rushed through.

Also when you do see what you need pick up a couple more then you think you need (providing you have the cargo space). All the personal weapons requests I saw in the beginning were asking for 3 tons, when I finally saw them available I bought 3 tons and when I next saw naval request for them... of course they wanted 4 tons now. LOL but that's why keeping a notebook is so key as by then it was easy to go back and get more. It is nice to accept a bulletin board mission and then immediately cash in w/o having to travel anywhere though. Good luck!

Look for High Tech/Refinery systems with high populations in the millions. The Map View will show Combat Stabilizers but you have to zoom in pretty close to see them. Once you find them they are illegal in many systems so don't get blown away trying to deliver them.

Well it damn well lies, it says that one system exports them when it clearly doesn't when you get there.

Not necessarily lies. The item just may not be in stock. Also, I ran across a couple of times when I saw the same product being imported and exported from the same system (as seen on the trade map). Go to the system from which they import the commodity and you are likely to find it there.

Learned that the hard way looking for those stupid combat stabilizers. Ultimately failed the mission. My advice - wait for any other mission. I ended up getting one an hour later to get non-lethal weapons. Cakewalk.

On a separate note - does having prohibited weapons in the hold trigger a fine/bounty or just prevents you from selling at that particular station? A couple of times I had some rares that are prohibited in some systems in my hold and apart from not showing up on my commodities trading screen, I had no other issues in terms of reputation/fines/bounties.
