Navigating Galaxy Map in VR

my current setup is a VR headset with mouse and keyboard. i do not have a HOTAS, nor do i intend to get one. i do not have a gamepad or controller either.

i am just trying out VR in this game, and i can't seem to navigate the galaxy map very well. i can use WASD to pan the camera, i have grid mode enabled and there is a blue circle that suggests that i should be able to select something with it but i can't. i have also tried to use the mouse to simply click on stars like i can in 2D but this doesn't work, nothing happens when i click. on top of that, i can't even SEE the cursor when i am in VR, i can only see it on my computer screen when i take the headset off. i have tried to mess around with the keyboard to see if i can navigate and select stars without the mouse to no avail. i noticed that using the arrow keys allows me to navigate the side panel to an extent, but it only allows me to select the exit button and anything that is within the panel should i hypothetically be able to select a star to begin with. the arrow keys do not allow me to select the tabs at the top of the panel. i try to go up, but there is simply no way for the selection to go up there.

i have also tried to look at the settings menu to see if i can mess with key binds, but it is all so confusing and i have no idea what anything does.

i was hoping someone could help me

UPDATE: so it would seem that i am not the only one with this problem, and the issue has been around for ages. unfortunate.

although, i was in the settings menu and i saw that there was a preset to ONLY use the keyboard and not use the mouse at all. does THAT method of playing have a way to navigate the galaxy map? if so that could be a work around.

I have the same issue. The pointer isn't where it appears to be. Like on the system map you have to move right and up. It's a pain. On the galaxy map I end up zooming out so there are more stars in the area and then I have a better feel of where the pointer is when the systems light up from the cursor passing over. They don't seem to care about VR users any more for whatever reason. I hope that will change at some point.

I use twin sticks to navigate the galmap & trust me its absolutely amazing.
VR and hosas/hotas is just very intuitive. Takes a while to setup but once it's done it's no drama.
I know this doesn't help I wish l knew a fix.

But I can state even though I got a mouse I just tab around using the sticks and their many buttons.
The only bugbear is my passthrough is crap so l have to take headset off to type anything in. But tbh that's rare cos most of the systems I goto are clearly bookmarked.

Unfortunately it is a long standing issue for mouse & keyboard users in VR.

A gamepad would be the cheapest solution - the default controls in Elite are mapped very well onto buttons/triggers, the only change I’ve made being to replace freelook with headset recenter (although I’ve got a HOTAS setup I spent years playing Elite with a gamepad before getting VR in 2017 and the sticks/throttle/pedals a couple of years later, so I still play with the pad. You don’t mention your headset, but the colour passthrough on Quest 3 is good enough that I do not need to remove my HMD when using the keyboard to type in system names).
