Need advice on choosing a ship

I am all about the 'joy'. I don't PVP btw.

For me it FdL all the way. I love how you have to learn how to play it. It reminds me of the Stratos in Dirt Rally. Challenging to learn but when you do suss it... wow!

And that engine sound!

Some can't get over the asymmetrical cockpit. But in VR it is totally awesome!

Nuff said!

My path was Viper, Vulture, FAS, FDL. I'd missed a lot of great combat game experience if I had bypassed them. I used the Python for awhile but trade with it now. Currently the Chieftain is really fun in a CZ and power to run all the cool goodies. It is well designed combat ship without the usual negatives the others have. The small drift is an asset if one knows what to do with it. I love drift.

Then again I love my Space Lobster!

A larger ship comes with a larger rebuy and if you are just starting out in your star fighter branded underpants you might want to consider how much money you are willing to throw away in the name of trial and error.
Start small, work up. Vulture is good.

[up] This. Usually, it is not the arrow, it is the Indian. Your ship will get blown up several times if you are new to combat as you improve your piloting skills, especially if new in PvE combat. Buying and fitting a small, inexpensive ship like an Eagle will teach the CMDR about careful outfitting and engineering. Flying an Eagle will teach a CMDR about maneuvering, tactics and power management. In an Eagle you can (usually) afford to get blown up several times as you learn.

Once you can beat anything in your own class in an Eagle (about anything up to and sometimes including a Vulture), then consider moving up to a Vulture. When you can beat anything up to a Fer De Lance in your Vulture, consider moving up into that ship. A medium-landing-pad capable FerDL when piloted by a skilled and experienced CMDR can take out the largest of ships in the game and some very skilled CMDRs can get the job done in a Vulture. o7

Ok, dont know if anyone cares, but I actually listened to you guys and after some extra research decided to go with diamondback scout. Engineered it and slapped 4 rails on it. Took some practice to get used to them but when I finally nailed it...Oh my god this thing wrecks **** :D slapped PVE in the face so hard it went to cry to its mommy :D Anyways just wanted to say thanks everyone who took time to post and guide a rookie :)

Chieftain is feeling like the new hotness to me. Half the cost of an fdl, more maneuverable and best built as a biweave-using hull tank.

DBX wire looms are zip tied along the canopy rails. Those rails are structural, and some low budget engineer decided to just drill holes in it for zip tie mounts... I wouldn't let an Imperial slave pilot a heap of junk like that. I'm surprised more don't come apart on jump. Gutamaya it is not.

Anything but a DBX.

Gutamaya ships use the same tie wraps as the dbx and or conda, they just put some curved white plastic on top to cover it up.

Vulture is fine and I still fly mine.
But I love the Courier and fly it much more often.
That ship would be my suggestion.

Even the Eagles are very good to learn in.
Don't overlook those, or the Viper.

FDL and Chieftain are my favorite medium ships for combat.
Didn't hit it off as well with the FAS but many do, and it's cheap.
My FGS gets used as a missile platform mainly but it's great in that role.

I use a Corvette for my large combat vessel, but I'm building a combat Cutter right now too.

Have fun, lots of good suggestions here!

I would like to invite you both to post on the thread "Viper Mark 4 Owners Club" where we show them off and share loadouts.

Viper MKIV owners club?

mmmh rings a bell, oh yes!

The MG Owners Club.

Get a Chieftain, you won't regret it. Multiple loadouts possible, beams + MC's, all Frags etc.

Excellent choice. I love the DBS. I have a fully engineered Vulture and I still fly the DBS because it’s so much fun. Try some different hard points on it to experiment. Multi cannons with the thermal mod are good, right now I’m running 4x frag cannons. It’s a very flexible platform.

Also, make sure to pack a shield cell bank, the heat management is fantastic.

If the choice is those three, it's a total no-brainer, the python. Sorry haven't read the thread, don't mean to insult any already expressed opinions. I LOVE my Chieftain, but I would sell it before the python, due to sheer usefulness.

From my personal experience....
Vulture: great ship without engineering if a rated. Although not so good fsd.
Python. One of the best I own and has room to have modules to grab all those mats from pew pew spoils. Definitely a rate. Ideally engineer.
FDL. A beautiful fighter but very short range, similar to vulture but way more expensive.
I courier. Cheap and effective, looks good and fly good. Also short range.
I clipper. Fat but sexy. Similar to FDL but worse shields, hard points not best placed and you'll need time to learn it's flight characteristics. That said it is so much fun and with its mass and manoeuvrability it is great for ramming.
Enjoy.

Totally agree with this. I have;
Vulture
Asp Ex
FAS
Chieftain
Python
If I could only have 1? Python hands down. Weapon placement is great and optional selection super versatile. Would cry at selling thr Chieftain though.

All combat ships have bad jump range because they are combat ships. You shouldn't be trying to take trips across the bubble in a combat ship. Just like you shouldn't be trying to do cargo missions in an eagle. So the whole "short range" is a moot point, and should not factor in when looking for a combat ship. It's not even a point of discussion.

Secondly, the Clipper is not similar to the FDL. They couldn't be much more different. FDL is a shield tank with perfect hard point placement, the clipper is a hull tank with terrible hard point placement. The clipper will smoke an FDL in a straight line. FDL turns better. They aren't the same size, clipper is a large, FDL is a medium. They don't look similar. FDL is the quintessential combat ship, Clipper is a multirole ship. Not similar, not anything a like.

Chieftain is by far the best "disposable" combat ship available, IMO.

Sure, you could buy an FdL but it's going to cost you Cr100m to outfit and the Cr5m rebuy means you're going to have to be more careful with it.
You could also buy a Python and use it for all sorts of useful things which aren't combat.. and it's going to cost you Cr100m and have a significant rebuy.

If you just want a ship to take out and have a laugh doing pew-pew, the Chieftain is absolutely the best choice, IMO.
Vulture is a good cheap alternative and the Viper 4 is lower down the same ladder.

It depends on what type of combat you are looking for. If you are the type that wants to stare into the eyes of your enemy as their blood boils in the hard vacuum of space then one of the Federal ships might well suit you. If you are more of a rapier type enjoying the cut and thrust of combat, then something fast and maneuverable might be better. If your thing is to close with the enemy and deal Plasma megadeath to their ships internals whilst soaking up some damage but keeping clear of their guns, and retreat is never an option for you, I would suggest the Chieftain.

It all comes down to your piloting style.

If you prefer a brutal, in your-face, broadside ramming style, the Python is great. It's rugged, durable, and brutal.

If you prefer a more evasive, finesse style, FdL, FAS or Chieftain are great.
