Horizons Need mining advice please

I would appreciate some advice on mining in solo mode please. Tried to do some for the first time, for materials needed for engineer recipes. Went to a low res. Ended up with bounty vouchers but no cargo. Not really any chance to fire at rocks for more than several tens of seconds before being attacked by npc pirates – in some cases wings of three. The security forces where there, but this did not stop the attacks. Perhaps res sites are for solo bounty hunters and not miners (?). I went to an ice ring one planet away with no res and was still attacked – obviously this is where pirates would naturally go….. What do you solo miners do to actually mine?

I usually go to an uninhabited system, in search for pristine reserves (need a discovery scanner & detailed surface scanner for that).

Generally accepted method is to go into the rings away from the actual Res sites as stated above, and the consensus appears to be that the closer you are to the planet (I'm assuming a pristine metallic here) the better the drop of high value materials.

1) Have no cargo other than any limpets you may be carrying. I mean NONE
2) There will be an NPC spawn. They should scan you, send you a message about how you make a living and toodle off....but don't stop there. Boost away from your drop point (which is "marked" just like the high wake markers you see and the NPCs might drop on it) - again, opinion varies - say 20 clicks?
3) Once your scanner is free of NPCs, proceed to mine. You should enjoy uninterrupted mining to your heart's content.

PS: Inject some fun into step 2 by boosting and running at top speed, floating your mining ship around the 'roids. Especially fun in a 'Conda. Good place to hone those FA off skills!
