Need some advice on mining

I'm trying to find selenium and mercury for an engineer. Went to EDDB and searched planets with those materials but the planets either had no minerals at all or had minerals but no selenium or mercuty.

Question - is there another way other than surface mining to get them and is there another website I can use to search for planets with these minerals? EDDB is fantastic but in this case their information appears to be inaccurate.

To find selenium, look for planets with volcanism and with selenium listed as materials
To top up on selenium faster use edtools.cc

For example, around Sol, using the above link you can find this

So go that Body (A 3 b in LP 811-17) with a ship equipped with DSS and SRV, scan the planet, then land in Geo sites and pick up materials, once you clear a site, move to the next
The above planet will have 58% to get Selenium in Crystalline Fragments in Geo sites, and then a good chance (more than 50%) to get Tin and the top material - Polonium, you can trade down to get Mercury

For easy getting of all other top tier raw materials, you need a ship with a jump range of 40 ly, fuel scoop and srv, and then read this thread

yes there might be two ways to find that element, one is to laser mine asteroid betls . maybe focus and filter two , one that nets decent credits and also sprays that element in space and lock limpets to collect both...
second is to surface scan moons in the colonia systems, if you track like say 1.5% of that element then record name, then search for higher like 1.7% and maybe sometime find a 3.5% then mark name of moon and use SRV ... yup

I'm elite in combat but a novice in that stuff. Where do I see the element content of the moon after you surface scan it? I've been to two moons that EDDB said had selenium but neither had any.

you need to "explore" the system by either FSS the bodies or get within 30ls range.
Then in system map select the body and check planetary info - it will reveal the composition

Geological sites I scan are still invisible to me In VR odyssey. Can only see em on horizons. So wen l did farm I just switched

Right, in EDDB if you also select Volcanism in Extra Column, the sort by Selenium you get this, 2 really good candidates
Now map them using the DSS and then drop in the GEO POIs and start harvesting

If you right click and open in new tab each of those bodies, you'll find out 4 a has Polonium (trade down for mercury) and 4 b has Ruthenium and Tin.

There are no more Bio/Geo suites in Odyssey.
They completely removed the concentration of bio/geo stuff in POIs and spread them all over the planet.
I'd really wished they also kept the POIs

Well if that's the case then geo sites should not exist at all in odysseys systemap or panel details. Because the mats are spread across the whole planet which again is dumb. Better as it was

Thanks. Perhaps volcanic will provide better results. I used that previously and found nothing but wasn't filtering for volcanic. I wonder if the type of volanism matters.

Try LHS 417 9 E A - Geo sites 18,19,21,23 & 25. Lots of Selenium on the surface and other hi grade materials for trading down.
Let me know if you get a mesage from a mysterious stranger while there. I've never followed it up!

Edit: Sorry @Val, didn't see your post. It was, like, literally the second post, but I was avoiding 'goids. Out of cream.

Thanks for the replies. It's a lot easier now that I understand how it works and how to use EDDB. Actually quite simple.

Maximizing my modules now. Got my bi-weave shields maxed out with thermal resistant and wondering what experimental is recommended. I considered multi-weave but went with force block to restore some of the kinetic loss that came with thermal resistant. PvE only.
