Need some guidance on specs

I've been debating on getting the DK2 and like everyone else considering it now, I'm hesitant for two reasons.. 1: will my current rig run it well enough & 2: I'm almost assured the CV1 version will be announced immediately after I get my Rift. I'm willing to make the purchase and again as soon as the CV1 comes out, but I don't know if my rig will perform well enough. I know I've got a good system, but I'm reading a lot about needing better. Here's what I've got (forgive the lack of any specifics).

Windows 7 x64 Home Premium
6TB Barricuda HDD 8mb cache
EVGA GTX 780 Superclocked
Intel i7 2700k 3.5GHz

I appreciate any solid feedback anyone can provide.

Also, I've been a gamer my whole life and I've never been into space type games, but this game alone has cost me hundreds of dollars and hundreds more to come as well as countless hours already & I haven't even started. This game has taken a hold of me like no other game and I'm dying to get the Rift experience, but if my rig can't run it well enough then I don't want to spend the money to potentially ruin the experience.

I recently got a DK2 without considering my PC specs. I had a Radeon 7700 and swiftly upgraded my graphics card to a GTX 970. This is with an AMD A8 3GHz quad-core processor. The processor isn't stellar and I'm considering overclocking it.

The experience is not ideal. At first the DK2 made me feel sick and the frame-rate is important. I've got the settings on the mid category presets - though I may have also disabled any anti-aliasing but minor changes. I do experience lower frame rate docking sometimes though, which I suspect won't be resolved with a better CPU.

I don't regret getting the DK2 at all. Elite Dangerous is the best game going for it at the moment and I'm wondering now about getting a HOTAS. I've seen that recommended along with the DK2 for the best experience.

I've no idea really about your graphics card. I guess there's really no ideal graphics card at the moment really - and by the look of things that would seem to suggest that the CV1 is not likely to be available soon. I'd bet that they will hold back for the graphics cards to catch up. The resolution of the DK2 is grainy and could do with going much further but that is severely limited by graphics cards too. I figure the DK2 will be all that's available for a while.

You won't get super-smooth frame rates in ED no matter what card you're using because there are definitely areas where there are bugs or lack of optimisation causing stuttering.

Your i7 is more than enough - I have an i5 and I'm never CPU bound in ED. Looks like the GTX 780 is monster high-end card, so you'll have no problems there.

I'd say your rig is good to go.

I'm running similar specs to yourself
I7@ 3.4
SSD
Windows 8.1
16GB ram
770 GTX

With your specs I wouldn't hesitate in purchasing a DK2
The experience it gives is truly incredible

For sure your not going to be able to turn up all the eye candy stuff but to be honest for me it's the level of immersion the rift does for the game

So for me most settings are on med to high excluding shadows, bloom, blur etc which are all off

Stations are a bit jittery but space is smooth, I don't visit RES sites as I'm sure this would be a stutter fest

But all in all a great all round experience

Worth every penny you have spent. Spend another 150 and do yourself a favor get a Saitek X-52 Pro HOTAS. You won't regret that decision either.

Not sure about the CV1 as this one is probably going to be 90hz and therefore requires a solid 90 fps and at a higher resolution; which is entirely different from the 75hz and 75 fps @1080p, but your current rig will have no issues with the DK2. And I too was at that stage; "should I buy a DK2 or wait" and I got one recently. Happy that I did, even if the consumer version is announcement tomorrow I more than welcome it's stay because for once in my 30 years of gaming I now see for the first time what 'next-gen' truly is and I'm glad I didnt wait any longer for it...

I've got the x-52 pro and I don't regret it but I wonder if I shoulda just got the warthog :p

I have similar specs to you, but have slightly overclocked my CPU and GPU.

I play Elite with the DK2 on full graphics settings. I turned off Motion Blue and Anti Aliasing and use Nvidia's wierd super resolution setting the resolution to 4K. It is smooth in space, but in the stations there is stutter but it stutters slightly at even 1080P regardless of what settings are used.

If anything you should get a SSD for a disk, not for Elite but it just makes life so much better :D

PC Specs :
i7-4770K @ 4.4GHz
GTX780 Core @ 1150Mhz Memory @ 3100MHz on Air.

**Update** I bought the Rift & now I wait. I'm very excited. Hopefully I'll remember to update here to advise on how well my rig handles the Rift.

Good advice on getting the DK2 and the HOTAS
I think if you have a just above average rig then any extra money should be put into the graphics card

You think you were addicted to Elite before, wait until you really sit in the cockpit of your ship :)
