Need some help setting up the Vive for Elite Dangerous

Hey guys! I just got my Vive two days ago, and after messing around with all the minigames in The Lab, and Audioshield, decided to set it up for Elite.

Now... The problem is, I have no idea what to do. I set 3D to HMD (Headphones) VR High, but the game looks horrid. Letters are nearly impossible to read, not to mention there is some serious, serious stutter whenever I turn my head.

I know someone will ask this, so yes, my computer is way above the recommended requirements.

I would like to know what settings I should set, or how to get it to work. I saw this video, and his game looks absolutely phenomenal. However, when asked what his settings were, he never replied to his thread :(

Thank you very much guys!!!

Without your stating the basic big 2... ( GPU and CPU ) I'm going to take a stab at the one setting that might be the source of your stutter.

Supersampling. Set it to 1. If it's at 1, set it lower.

Set VR settings down one step from High.

If that doesn't fix it... there's something going on in the background.

The letters are going to look bad no matter what you do. Some people change the GUI colors to green, or blue, or whatever floats their boat. I've kept my GUI to stock settings, and it's tolerable. But objects in the distance, and letters on your floating HUD are going to be fuzzy no matter what you do. 1st gen VR and whatnot.

Your primary issue is the stuttering, especially with head tracking. That would kill the experience for me. So, again. Supersampling. Dial it down to start?

Thanks for the reply!

Here's my specs: I7 3770K @ 4.6GHz
2x R9 290X Gpus

The problem is not actually lag... It's the weird stuttering (idk how to explain it) with head tracking. I guess you could call it the screen door effect.

I have experimented with the things you mentioned, but again, my issue isn't exactly performance, but with headtracking. It's just... crazy and not smooth at all.

I'm due to get my Vive in June, so I'm very interested in how you proceed on the settings.
I saw that same video, & ED looked fantastic.
If I come across any useful setup advice I will forward it to you.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried disabling crossfire and running the game with just a single card?

I would like to hear graphic and res settings from other VR players as I have 1 x Asus GTX 980ti and set to ultra and works fine. With no stutter, but will check FPS tonight.
Also seems fine on surface landing and SRV use.

Computer:
I7 processor
Windows 7
16g ram.
Asus motherboard.

My main problem is text and nav correct res settings. Seems to me an aspect ratio or res problem only ED has.
Been testing my Vive with various software and even this basic player (http://www.whirligig.xyz/ or Steam) shows 1080p 3D films and text (even file selection) better then ED.
And seems to show them better than other software I have used in VR with Vive or Oculus.

I think we need to wait for FD to take a look at the vive and optimize the game for it.

It seems everyone who owns a vive have the same problems.. myself included.

Meanwhile take a look at the little demo on steam "Irrational Exuberance" my jaw is still somewhere on the floor.

Hey guys, so yesterday I updated my graphics drivers on the computer. When the display driver installed, the computer froze and I had to force restart.
But, after the windows loading screen, it would show only a black screen. Long story short, I spent the night trying to figure out the issue, reinstalling Windows was ok, until windows installs video drivers automatically.
Finally, I figured out the issue. It's the Vive.
So! Unrelated to the post, but disconnect the Vive linkbox (both USB and HDMI) from the computer before any updates.

Now, I was on Windows 10, and installed Windows 7 (we'll see how long I stick with it, I like new stuff). I ran the SteamVR Performance tool and got the same score as in Windows 10, which is around 10.8-11.0
But here is a key difference:the test showed some weird shadow flickering under Windows 10.And at the time, I dismissed it as normal and part of the test (same flickering would occur under Robot Repair in The Lab)
Additionally, SteamVR and the games show intermittent crashes under Windows 10, hangups and blackscreens.
Under Windows 7,there is no such flickering. So far no crashes, or other issues. So I will be testing Elite under Windows 7 later on today when I'm home again and I've reinstalled the game.

It seems Windows 10 doesn't play nice with SteamVR

I will report back with results when I test Elite later

ED with the Vive is unplayable for me currently at any setting/combination of settings. The Rift however is smooth as butter.

It'll be down to FD to see if they can improve things somewhat for Vive users. Other Vive games don't have those issues, but none of them have the scale/UIs of ED, so it remains to be seen how much better they can get it.

I seem to have the same issues regarding the Vive.

My specs are above requirements (2 970gtx, reasonably fast i5, enough ram etc. etc. on win10)

I usually play the game on 4k in ultra settings and it's silky smooth (with the occasional break in when landing on planets)

So when running the Vive, no matter which graphic settings I choose, I get the same odd head tracking stuttering as described by the OP.
Performance in itself is fine, even if I ramp up the graphics my system manages fine and FPS are stable. It's the head tracking that seems somewhat borked and lags terribly. (which makes me want to have a lie down really quick)

If I open the steam UI while in-game in VR that in turn is silky smooth again, so my guess is that something in the game head tracking code is off?

Didn't have that issue back in the DK2 days...

Same here. Moving from my trusty DK2 with SS at 2.0, everything set to ultra and maxed out in the Nvidia controls - a butter smooth.

Vive experience seems to be as per everyone else. Massive stuttering, poor quality visuals, etc.

Isn't the Vive supposed to be superior hardware to my DK2?

I have the same problem, been running Elite at 4K since the Beta so was really looking forward to jumping in with VR when my Vive arrived 2 weeks ago. Sadly as described by everyone else it is completely unplayable. Stuttering, unreadable text, just very disappointing.

Tried again today and and still can't get it to work. Avoid this game with the Vive until it is fixed.

Wow, many of you get radical quite quickly. I have an I7 @ 4000 MHz with an GTX980 (Win7) and had massive stuttering and judder in my DK2... My first approach was to check drivers and system configuration. I had to reduce overclocking on the FSB & CPU, because this caused judder in head-tracking. Without OC, stuttering and judder were only related to the performance of my graphics card... changed on any change of supersampling. I run E : D at 1.5 SS everything on ultra or high, still. Reason: The USB data couldn't be processed in sync with the graphics.
With the Vive I checked which USB port is used by which device and finally granted one USB-hub exclusively to it. I haven't changed anything since the DK2 and the performance (FPS, judder) has not noticeably changed with the Vive. Image clarity, scale, etc. are different but to my mind not really bad.
My advice: Make small steps and check their effect. A Windows reinstall causes a lot of factors you can't judge.

Rhombus

What myself (and I'm sure the others) haven't mentioned are the many steps that came before posting here.
Of course I went and analysed any possible causes to look for a solution. Having had similar issues with the DK2 I'm not exactly new to these issues.

Unfortunately it seems a persistent issue.

At the end of the day it boils down to everything else running smoothly and tracking perfectly. (the various VIVE demos, the lab, budget cut, whatever else I could run really)

Even the Steam VR Overlay / Store (whatever it's called) you can bring up while in-game (in elite) tracks perfectly.

That's the point in time when at work I usually just start the debugger and start taking things apart. :p
Which I'm sure somebody at FD already is. :)

.

The screen door effect is a term that some of us living in parts of the world where screen doors are not a thing, don't always get immediately, at least I had to see it before I understood. It's the effect of seeing the individual pixels, or more accurately, the gaps between the pixels which makes it look like you are looking through a gauze. Another way to think of it, like a pair of tights/stockings over your head when you're off to rob a bank ;-)

Have you confirmed the setup of your lighthouses is sufficient for seated tracking?

I'd love for the vive to have quality on-par with what that guys has on his video ;-) Looking forward to it in the future sometime.

As far as I know, there's no way to record exactly what the person is seeing through the Vive. It would have to be a camera on the human side of the lenses.

The reason you see such good quality graphics is because the recording is from the graphics card, as you'd see on a regular screen.

Thanks for the clarification. I guess I was confused as to what screen door was :p In that case well, the Vive looks gorgeous, lol. No screen door that I have noticed as of yet.

As for lighthouse placement, I have confirmed that they are placed in such a way that covers my entire standing-up play area, as well as the area where I sit to play. Additionally, supposedly the vive can do seated tracking with just one lighthouse. There is one staring at me right in the face.

The other one is more to the right, but I'm still within its FOV.

In other news, I actually ended up returning to Windows 10. The issue with the video drivers had nothing to do with the operating system. As I mentioned before, if you are going to update your video drivers, disconnect the linkbox from the PC, specifically the HDMI cable. It will save you a night of wondering what the hell is going on.

Now, here's the thing, I mentioned earlier that there was serious shadow flickering in The Lab, Aperture Robot Repair (like, shadows going crazy all over the place). Since I had the same issue in the SteamVR Performance Test, I had assumed that it was normal and "part of the test".

Apparently, the video drivers I had were the culprit (mind you, they were released March 25th, so they aren't even old drivers). Once I finally got the newest drivers working, the shadow flickering and crazyness is gone.

Yesterday was the fiances birthday, so even though I was off I wasn't able to test anything. I will take some time to test Elite when I get home from work today.

I am hopeful that the new video drivers will help with the issues. If they do, I shall let you know.
