Need some understanding

So, our adopted home system, Luyten's Star, has had some odd stuff happening lately.

Historically over the past couple years, Sirius Corporation has maintained controlling influence over the system, with 2nd place jostling back and forth between Red Squadron, Sirius Free, and Luyten's Star Company.

Sirius Corp is almost always in boom state, and usually has a wealth of work (I and my small squadron are max rep). Recently, though, it hasn't been uncommon to see only 2-4 missions from them.

Additionally, the other factions have been going through various states. Red Squadron and Green Party of Luyten's Star were both in a competing election. A friend and I decided to support Red Squadron, clearing 2 mission boards and taking the highest influence options (since election-based missions don't pay much anyway).

Well, between that time and the next tick, Green Party of Luyten's Star managed to squeak a fraction of a percentage out, while Red Squadron plummeted nearly 7%. Simultaneously, New Luyten's Star League went from next to lowest influence to 2nd highest in the system in less than a week.

I've been in this system for 3 years and I've never seen this big of an influence change in a week's time.

Any clue what's going on? We see a few commanders moving about the system (granted that's little indication of actual player traffic) from time to time. I understand a little of how BGS works, but I don't understand how the factions can flop so fast in a week's time.

The only obvious wierdness is that someone might be utilizing (accidently purhaps) the bug on the last day of a conflict and hammering Inf between Tick 1 (State Changes) and Ticks 2/3 (Inf Changes) to get big/strange changes. If you are not playing in that 1-3 hour gap after tick start, you can be seriously disadvantaged.

And/Or Powerplay. They can serious mess things up just doing their stuff.

During most of the period New LS League were rising, four of the seven factions in the system were locked in conflicts. With Pirates of Luyten's Star suffering the fate of Anarchy factions everywhere and being stomped down to a permanent 1%, that means that there's only really New LS League and Sirius Corp competing for influence, which tends to increase volatility significantly.

They also got a big boost from the Green-Red election ending - on conflict ending days, the factions can't easily change their influence other than the 8% separation the conflict ending gives (bug mentioned by Dommarraa aside) - but other factions can start to steal the influence out of the conflict because the influence moves happen after the conflict is unlocked. So rather than Green+4, Red-4 on the election end day, you saw something closer to Green+1, Red-7.

Checking the history back before the Odyssey release there doesn't appear to have been a massive change in how the system has stabilised under passing traffic, so probably no long term effects - it's just been a slightly odd week with those two conflicts happening to line up.

granted that's little indication of actual player traffic
Check the traffic report in the local station news for an accurate cross-platform figure.

Thanks for the responses. The BGS seems far more complicated than I anticipated.

This system was controlled by Red Squadron when I first arrived here. Granted I don't usually get involved with BGS stuff, but from a principle/role-play perspective, I don't want to see a dictatorship overtake my home system. Guess we'll do what we can to try and knock their influence down. Failing that, I am saving up for a fleet carrier. ;)
