Nerf the FDL for pvp’s sake

It's quite apparent that you have probably never participated in organized wingfights, so here's an example:

That was a 4v5 in which 8 out of the 9 participants died, but once the fight was over we could do another one in a couple of minutes.
You cannot seriously think that it would be a good idea to force 8 people leave the system after every single fight for an hour to get back their feedback rails, drag drives and whatnot.
You are correct, I have never participated in organized PvP, and it appears my idea would ruin everything that has been established, but if it had been that way from the start we wouldn't be having this discussion, different gameplay would have emerged in different ways. fdev made design choices that we will continue to enjoy or suffer from forever, and I guess one of them is the meta FDL. I don't seriously expect anything to change because so many different player groups have built their gameplay around how things are now.

Edit: maybe if the game had an organized PvP mode or place you could go for that that had different rules of rebuy, sort of a CqC but with your own ships

Trying to balance scarcity mechanisms required for a credible setting, with the desire to repeatedly throw ships at each other until they are destroyed, is an exercise in futility.

Organized PvP is a sport that (as soon as they tossed the idea of no FTL comms) should always have been done in a telepresent simulator mode, at no cost to, and with no impact on, the rest of the game. Instead, we got CQC...which had potential in and of itself, but which solved no problems.

Anyway, that's largely a separate issue from ship balance. The fact that the FDL is over represented isn't some 'meta effect' that confuses cause and effect. It's an entirely rational response to the fact that the ship broadly outperforms most others in the most versatile class of combat vessel. I spent years trying to avoid and/or improve upon the meta, but from the day my CMDR could afford one I nearly always found myself back in the FDL whenever my performance actually mattered, because it was the best. Then they made it even better, effectively removing what choice I had, even as they degraded the character, and my enjoyment of, the ship.

Only the fluke of about a thousand unfortunate Engineering rolls gave me a reprieve from the FDL, because the best FDL I could make wasn't competitive with drives that made it one of the slowest PvP FDLs around. Unfortunately, that era wasn't particularly enjoyable either, as it mostly reinforced how potent the FDL, and how crappy the Engineering content gating, was. The situation improved a bit with 3.0, but we're still left with many ostensible choices that amount to very few viable combat options, unless all you want to do is prey on robots or novice CMDRs.

I know I shouldn't contribute to a Necro but please don't nerf the FDL! I've been trying to like this ship since commercial launch and now finally in the last month or so have I made peace with the FDL and come to love it!

Not a PVPer myself but messing with cost of the ship and rebuys will have minimal affect. Credits are so easy to get most people could farm multiple rebuys of a fully equipped FdL in an hour. Spend a few hours running trading missions or bounty hunting and you have rebuys for pvping with the FdL for a week.
