Never fly without rebuy...

I'm confused - last time I flew without enough to rebuy and died I'm sure I could still repurchase my ship and it just took a percent of what I made until the debt was paid off?

Am I remembering wrong?
That loan doesn’t provide anywhere near enough for most of the ships in the game.

He did manage to do a few manual docks in the start of the game. But never tried it with a big space bus.

Yeah anyone can dock in a small/medium ship. I only ever died to docking (once I wasn't a total noob) once I went to large ships. The margin for error is just so much less, and the mailslot doesn't even seem like it was sized with the larger ships in mind.

I feel for your friend because it's honestly lame getting killed because of a mistake. The game needs better ways to detect what is an accident and what is pure malice imo.

The new players want to get the nice ships as soon as possible and we oblige them rather than persuading them how much fun a sidey can be lol.
Agreed. I never advocate fast progression.
Taking progression slowly and avoiding get rich quick schemes is the key to playing the game in a way that will last. Progressing too quickly will burn out a player quickly as they will 'skim the surface of the game' then not know what to do.

There's no structured "progression" in Elite. And since everything we do is done in ships, the best way to appreciate and get hooked on Elite is doing things in objectively good and effective ships. This limits frustration as one feels less hopeless and impotent.

2 lessons learned here:
1. Never fly without a rebuy
2. Never fly without a rebuy

He's stubborn and wants to figure stuff out himself. Bad game for that kind of mentality >< He learned the hard way.

Perfect game for that actually, the mistake you made was helping him into a ship beyond his experience. Otherwise theyd have found out about rebuy costs in his smaller ships and then worked out that it goes up and probably built it into their game.

Its a terrible game to teach people to shortcut and give charity, but each to their own.

Edit: P.S. to be more helpful to them let the know that landing gear on and off can clear the jam.

i liked it also back with elite'84 and elite since release... build credits for the next ship -> buy it -> use it to a grade everything -> save up for next ship.

i remember mining in a viper! to save up for the cobra3....

and then first time in t6/t7/conda. nervousness how to get through the slot....

no, slow progression would be better. (imo)

Just to clarify, I never told him to get a bigger ship, actually quite the opposite. I just gave him some money so he could do whatever he wanted with loadouts :)
