Hardware & Technical New build graphics nightmare

Sorry to mods for posting this in intro first. New to forums, and it looked like i was locked out of the main threads.

Hi everyone CMDR Ragathan here.

So I'm halfway through building a new dedicated Elite PC.

ASUS M5A78L-M Mobo
AMD FX 8350 8core processor
Radeon HD 4860 (I think) (This is the last thing to update.. wil be going for the GTX 1060 6gb)
16gb Corsair Vengeance

I have just loaded up the game to see what i can squeeze out of the old Radeon, and on high the fans pumped up pretty immediately so I switched back to Mid.

Oh.. also.. I got a ''This computer cant run Elite:Dangerous Horizons, please refer to minimum requirements'' notice on startup, which made me sad, but the game started anyway.

My issue is that it seems like there is heavy pixelation and the station name (on the hanger wall, not the station services) seems to have corrupted really wierdly.. from a distance is is completely unreadable

And as I return to surface.. It looks like its corrupted somehow

Im sure that mid graphics shouldn't look so messy as well.

What am i doing wrong, or is the game right.. it just hates my PC for some reason?

I am running a 1080p smart TV monitor on HDMI (converted via cable from the whatever that is on the back of the Radeon)

Please help.

I'd have posted this somewhere else, but the forums won't let me.

No problem- you have to start here. Someone more knowledgeable than me will be needed to advise you on the actual problem I'm afraid.
But in the meantime- welcome to the forum :)

Thanks guys. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I believe it's actually the Radeon HD 4870 that I've got by the way. I'm pretty sure that is the issue. It's odd though, I've loaded the game up on what I thought were much lower graphics cards .. the integrated 3000 in my vaio for instance. It never gave me the "minimum requirements" message, and just proceeded to drum the game slowly and with a terrible fps. Lol

It will be a month or so before I can get the 1060 so if I could make it run on what I have that'd be amazing. :)

Also, since then I flew out of a station and looked at a sun, it was split into three versions of itself and populated terribly. It's unplayable on this machine as is.

Yeh I think that's the answer. I was just hoping for a "Oh it's just directx installed wrong".. or something. Windows 10 tho, do I think that's all bundled.

Stop trying to cheapskate on the card. :)

Thanks man. Appreciated. I'm a little lost.

That's part of the issue - your card has so little VRAM and supports so few DX functions that it's going to struggle no matter what, and taking details and resolution to the lowest you can possibly use are really the only way of helping it along.

Right. I'll have a look at super minimum graphics. I think the answer is get back to work and don't spend anything until I've finished the project properly though. :)

The Radeon 4870 was a good card for it's time but you will find a gfx card update will improve your situation quite markedly.

PS. still using a 4870 in my old PC and it runs Elite ok at modest settings.

Right. So maybe that's not my issue. Is there anything else that could be causing that message?

Nah, get yourself a GTX 970 or A GTX 1050.

I've had my eye on the 1060 6gb. It seemed a decently futureproofed card that was at the very upper end of my budget. Do you think that's overkill??

I'd rather not spend money I don't have to. But I want to be able to run elite on ultra for the next 5 years or so.

You could also think about an Rx480,of course.

Although, specifically for elite, I probably wouldn't because elite is Nvidia optimised. Hence the Nvidia logo appearing in the manual.

a 1050, though not future proofed, will run elite without breaking a sweat.

It's definitely the graphics card. That piece is long out of driver support, not to mention that it probably doesn't have remotely enough memory (Horizons needs at least 2GB) and only supports DX10 (Horizons needs 11, the base game may be fine with 10). The rest of that system will do just fine for Elite including Horizons.

I think that last bit re running better on NVIDIA is pure speculation without a direct comparison between equivalent 1060 and RX480 cards

I could for example just as equally state that as Elite is optimised to run on both xbox and playstations, which run on AMD chips with graphics cores based on the Polaris architecture used in RX480s and RX470's, that the game would run better on AMD.

Such a statement however would be just as lacking in actual substance as your comment.

All i will say is i play elite at 2560 x 1600 on an RX480 in and old i7 920 system with everything set to ultra, and the only time i go below 60 frames a second is on planets around bases, or in very intense res sites.

Get a RX 470 4g. I am fixing up my potato with one.

There's also a mini 1050 thats interesting, I prefer AMD.

I run Elite Horizons with a 1G HD6450 @ a blistering 20fps on a 2 core pentium doorstop.

You could even just grab a second hand card off e-bay for about £40 quid in the interim and then save up for a full 1080, I was on a Radeon HD 7970 until recently and it ran just fine until I tried VR. When I looked at selling it £40 was all it was getting online so I gave it to my folks instead.
