General / Off-Topic New Chris Sawyer Interview

Some reaction of mine to the interview (I didn't read all of it as I'm not really interested in his private life):

-Atari and him had a legal battle? Can anyone tell me what it was about exactly?
-RCT2 is meh at best. I prefer RCT1 despite some glaring errors in the scenario editor *glares at unbuyable spaces of land surround by buyable ones in various scenarios*
-So he's going mobile. I personally think the Canadian Devil is involved with those things. It's pay2play waiting to happen. And there are enough idiots to support it sadly.
-"create a very faithful conversion of the original PC game." oh well that explains a bit....I already doubted it would be a port of good quality.
-Ah, found the link about the settlement between Atari and him.
-Aaaaand here we have the part where you stand by your product while it's being turned into a pile of smoldering ashes....
-I have to admit, I have stopped having hopes of game series being continued down a path of my liking after what happened after SimCity4 with SimCitySocieties and SC2013 *cringe*
-A most interesting bit imho:
Frontier Developments is working on Planet Coaster, which many consider to be the spiritual successor to RollerCoaster Tycoon. Have you considered licensing the RollerCoaster Tycoon mark to Frontier and working with them on a new game in the series? I imagine fans of your work would be delighted by the prospect!
Chris Sawyer: The rights for developing new RollerCoaster Tycoon games have been licensed to Atari for a number of years now so it would have been up to Atari whether they wanted to sub-license the rights to Frontier Developments or use Frontier to develop the new game, so it's a question I can't really answer.

Thanks! Interesting read. I have only read the last part, about RCT4 for mobile and RCTW, and his relation with Atari and Frontier/David Braben.

Interesting though: (last question)
What's next for you? Are you considering making a new game?

Chris Sawyer: At the moment I'm only looking as far ahead as seeing RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 finished and published on mobile platforms. Beyond that I have no idea. I'd never rule out creating a new original game but I think it's unlikely. I feel like I'm getting on a bit now age-wise and want to take things a bit easier!

It's a good interview worthy of a read. A couple of Interesting highlights:

  • Chris Sawyer still owns the IP and trademark to RCT, Atari hold a limited licence to create and distribute new games in the franchise.
  • Following the success of the 31X/Origin8 mobile port of Transport Tycoon they're currently working on a mobile port of RCT2.

Thanks for sharing the interview. So fun to read something about him for once, he's very secret person just as he say himself.

I am excited by the news on RCT2 for mobile. I hope it will come quick, before I have to endure the plane ride to Japan (from Sweden) this June. But not holding out just yet. I hate long plane rides because of my claustrophobia and my hmmm issues. (hate being uncomfortable, sensory inputs etc) sorry too much boring stuff now.
So yeah, looking forward to RCT2 mobile. :) Hope it will work nice on ipad 4 (realize now I have "kind of" old ipad..) and not only for tiny screen.
