Modes New CMDR - Choosing Game Mode Forever

So, I've got this plan to buy new CMDR and play exclusively in Open without ever going to other mode. For funzies, and i don't PvP... this should be good!
Not so original, I know, as there are people who go Iron Man mode etc.

This got me thinking, would this option make sense?
*When making New CMDR, you choose one - Open or Solo/Private, and you cant switch between them*

It's like PvP vs PvE servers in WoW or other MMOs.
You can switch to another with payed in-game services, each time costing you money.

This could solve a huge number of problems, because especially when playing in Open, there is no way out! (Unless you pay to switch to Solo)
Of course, a sane developer would make the worlds Open and Solo/Private separate, but I'm not sure if FDev would do that.

Thoughts? Sorry, if it was already discussed...

Good on you mate. I play open only, was a choice. Its rare to find that hollow yellow triangle when I'm trading. Only way you at least get a small sense of danger at all.
As for the rest duck :)

I totally agree.

No mode switch, less grind, less griefer and more role play.

I like changing modes to suit what I want at the time, so it wouldn't interest me. My internet is patchy as well so I'm frequently stuck in solo even if I don't feel like it.

Also a large number of the loudest open only proponent grind money, engineer and clear bounties in solo so I wouldn't take what they want you to do at the menu seriously at all.

Choice is good. Restrict yours if that's what you like, but let everyone else do their own thing.

That's great, I wouldn't want to take that away from you.

I would basically give even more choice! Basically add two more servers (options) which makes 3 in total:

1. Current one which we have now, basically a free for all, do what ya want, play how you want;
2. Open only, basically a hardcore mode of Elite;
3. Solo/Private who don't want to be bothered with playing with other people, basically a single player/coop with your friends.

The 3rd one maybe not that great of an option, as 1st basically offers the same + more options (with it's own issues)

I don't know how much server costs would that increase, but I think opening some new servers to start fresh CMDR could be a breath of fresh air for CMDRs who for example want more Hardcore experience (or a solo/coop).

Just thinking out loud.

With the player base big enough, it could bring back a lot of players. We could think of it similarly to Classic WoW servers or Classic L2 Servers, or Hardcore mode servers, whatever.

Only problem you’ll find is a lack of vacant pads on occasions. For example the rescue ops after thargoid attacks, or cg’s Requiring trips to outposts. Absolute pain in the rear doing that open only.

Devs could easily fix the problem by creating more pads for mega ships and outposts in high traffic areas.

More instances at stations could solve this problem.

I wouldn't mind your idea, but only if we got an extra cmdr slot for free.
I would even be prepared to pay 5 bucks for an extra cmdr slot, without having to buy a new game.
I want to use all my extra stuff, skins, voicepacks etc. for all my cmdrs and I do not want to have to buy everything a second time..

Only a few thousand times over the last 5 years [haha]

For me it's an impossible decision. I have to be able to switch modes for as long as PvP is in the game.

I play in Open about 98% of the time, including doing CGs on the occasions I agree with the CG itself. BUT and it's a big but *sniggers* I have to be able to swap into a PG in order to be able to take hi-res photos! If I could take them in Open then I'd never leave, but I equally couldn't spend all my time in a PG or Solo because I love some of the encounters I have with people in Open.

With the player base big enough, it could bring back a lot of players.

I'm afraid the idea of changes to modes, or even the gameplay surrounding them bringing back lots of players, I see as a complete fallacy. It really would make next to no difference in players decisions to come back, because they had the choice in the first place and pretending they left (for example) because people could hide in solo and expecting everyone to suddenly play in Open to be their targets, is a ridiculous idea.

Let's see...

Open Play/Private Group : Outpost blocked by a Medium Ship (intentional or AFK/Asleep).
Open Play/Private Group : trying to disengage into a very busy place... 60 sec blue tunnel *Matchmaking Server Error*
Open Play/Private Group : on a Planet with 10+ other Players. 10 fps. Crash to Desktop after deploying Landing Gear.
Open Play/Private Group : on a Planet at Guardian Ruins with a few other Players. Nothing is in its original place and items you need have been picked up or moved already.
Open Play/Private Group : 30 Minutes after a long Server downtime. New Version maybe. Frequent Disconnects, monster lag and infinite, stuck Hyperjump animations.
Open Play/Private Group/Solo : Mission Boards holds insufficient or zero suitable Missions.
Open Play/Private Group/Solo : A CMDR playing in {Mode A} chats with a Buddy {Mode B} and is invited to check something out in a MultiCrew Session.

What then?
Gotta say, the ability to freely switch Game Modes can be a Godsent gift, solving alot of otherwise unsolvable issues.
Right now, locking the Modes would be a terribly bad idea.

Hmm, i swtich depending on my mood and who i want to meet, so generally against this idea, but as i've said elsewhere, if FD take the step of intentionally differentiating the modes in terms of features, then it might be time to do something like this, although i'd prefer a complete breaking off of Open.

But I see a problem. The open only crowd won't like it. They won't be able to duck into PG/solo when they want to farm materals in safety or board flip. :p

And before anyone jumps in and says they don't do that, irrelevant, i know plenty of open only proponents do switch to PG/solo for various reasons.

I highly doubt this would ever happen on consoles because of the need to have a plus / gold account to play in open. If PS+ keeps going up in price and I'm unable to get a good discount via sales or 3rd-party coupons, I myself may give up PS+ since most of my games are single-player. The last thing I want is to be locked out of my ED CMDR that currently plays in open, just because I can't afford PS+ :(

Pad blocking is the only reason I mode switch.

Still holding out for a Hardcore mode with an RNG on death (like the one in my sig), and CMDR needs (so not only fuel needed but also air, water etc - which would need a complete re-write of the game so there's no chance :)

I've played too many roguelikes I think!

One can never play too many roguelikes.

im on PS4, and i only use solo for board flipping, never really messed with private groups. Open for me is more fun, because i tend to hang out in places where i see other CMDRs regularly.
