New Controller Type

FDev sends you little handheld ship. You hold it in your hand and when you want to turn, you turn the ship. If you want to go up, you raise it up. And so on.

Same thing for VR first person except the send you a little person to hold and move around.

To fire your weapons and do other ship functions, you make sound effects and voice recognition performs the action. Trainable to the sound effects of your choice.

That's a pretty clunky looking mobile phone app :)

One of the things I like about playing ED is that 'flight sim' aspect, but without an up or down. It is as much an excuse to use a Hotas as anything & I don't feel any desire to change the way I control the ship other than maybe getting some pedals for yaw instead of twisting the stick, which is already something I could buy.

I think if I used a 'controller' as the OP describes I would be quickly frustrated by the lag between my rapid movements and the time the ship takes to make the change; one of the reasons why I don't use a mouse.

But as an additional option, sure why not? It'd be like moving the whole ship with head-look.

I think he just wants to have this:

brought to another level. You could even still do pew-pew sounds.

I would not use it myself, but certainly not against it. More choice is generally good. However, it would chaff my lily white rump to no end if they added support for something like this before fixing the absolutely ridiculous for 2010, forget 2020, 32 button limit per controller.

I don't believe either are made any longer but the 3d Space Controller, and Space Orb 360, could have been used in such a way.

I tried slapping what's in that clip (or something similar) on the base of an old joy stick and hooked it to a board I have that is recognized as a generic PC controller, but I couldn't get it to work well. Very jittery and lagy. Probably a combination of a cheap sensor and me not knowing how to code it well.

I hadn't thought of a phone app, many smart phones have the sensors to make something like that "work."

So basically you want what sony did with its built in motion controls and the WipeOut series of racing games.

And yes it works fantastically.

Love to see it.

Yeah it was a bit of a joke. On a serious note, I have been wondering what a good VR experience would be for the new first person shooter mode that is coming in Odyssey.

Nonexistence because it isnt supported. Unless you mean something else. I assume I just misunderstood

You understood correctly. I thought they said they didn't implement VR for 1st person because they want it to be a top notch experience. I take that to mean they are not satisfied with the way VR plays with the currently known methods. This means something better needs to be invented before they will implement it.

Like most things, this idea starts simple but turns out to be complicated.

If I wiggle my ship model around while saying "pew pew pew", then I obviously want to fire my lasers three times; while if I say "chucka chucka" it's clear that I want to fire a kinetic weapon twice.

But are my lasers on Fire 1 or Fire 2? Because that's all the game understands. And by "chucka chucka" did I mean my multicannon, my cannon, or my shock cannon? And if "pew pew pew", did I mean the pulses or the big beam? Or both? And what if I say "kaboom", but I don't carry mines?

No, this excellent idea needs a lot of further consideration before it can be implemented.

Can't you just buy a little toy spaceship, and screw it to the top of your joystick?

Then make voice attack recognize what you mean by pew pew and so on.

Am I being a killjoy? Or just a grumpy old man. Or both?!

Well, imagine a joystick that after you land on the planet, the stick can detach from the base of the joystick. The stick corresponds to the orientation of your avatar, so if you want the avatar to lie down, you lay the stick down. If you want it to jump, you make a jump motion.

Lowering the landing gear could be "ssshhhuuuzzzT" ?

Lol. Nah, you are not a killjoy. It isn't a totally serious idea but I am am just curious about what new controller idea could be used for VR in this game. Holding a ship or some object in free space as a controller might not be that great in practice. Though new hardware controllers is probably beyond what this game company will try to do. In reality, it has to be controlled by the controllers we already use. Joystick, Keyboard, mouse, console controller, etc.

I think the head swivel is a no brainer and it is easy to imagine how that works. Moving the body around with a joystick will be more robotic but that is normal for 1st person shooters. I wonder what they will come up with, if anything.

Also there is the problem of how to split the controls between interfacing with the world and controlling your avatar. Often the entire portal of interfacing with the world happens through the targeting area. You point at something and click a button. The reaction from the environment is contextual.
