new Data Link Scanner in ships - what does it actually do?

According to Sandy, it's effectively a "feature awaiting matching content". I suspect this means that we'll get more stuff in space that we can interact with....in the same way we can currently interact with ground based stuff via our SRV's.

Likely related to the new structures (from CQC) I'd think.

Well the scanner dont work.... and if you have to get within 200m of the ship.... your gonna have a VERY hard time scanning..... I have tried and tried but it just doesn't work.... maybe 1km from the ship might be a little more feasible.

DL scanner works fine - what are you trying to scan, oh great necromancer?

I can hover over a planetary outpost and scan the points in my ASPX, I'm not sure what your issue is in space..

I have been trying to scan ships.... so its not for scanning ships? Sorry but I am only very new to Elite.... so please explain what is its main use? Also does your ship automatically scan other ships when they are in a certain range? There so much information that contradicts each other on the net....as per usual lol

I can use the FSS scanner and the surface scanner, but not sure what the data-link scanner is for or how to use it? Please help rather than being a smart :p

You can use it to scan megaships, and other space objects.

It's not for scanning ships.

I suggest you do the new tutorial. You use the Data link scanner in it.

It’s Raxxla, a thing that is but isn’t an is at all. It is a thing, but not a thing. It’s a null but not a null. A deactivated piece of technology. Maybe monitoring us, with this space police black box fitting....

Keep an eagle eye out for flashing blue lights....

Keep an eagle eye out for thine Dark Wheel.....

Used to scan data point on surface bases, and space installations and megaships
Except that the graphic bar which used to 'fill up' as it scanned now appears not to be working since the September update, and gives the effect that the scanner isn't scanning, I've found that if you keep the button pressed it eventually shows the information, such as scanning a public date beacon in a USS, even though it looks to be broken.

Seemed to work for me but I can only test it in the Tutorial due to current location

The Data Link Scanner can scan data points found in certain structures, on Mega Ships, and Generation Ships.
It can scan some surface-based data points, but due to having absolute crap for range (200 m), it's darned hard to even get a Dolphin close enough to most of them to scan. It's useless for scanning Guardian Obelisks, and I don't think it works on the +++ data points we use to scan for useful data that we now just trade with Data Traders.

It may have some additional functions added, but it really should have its range doubled. 200m is just too annoying to scan something. 400m would be ideal.
