New disciplinary action for my Kids, mining rocks in the SRV

I love Elite, I do, in fact, I love most of the activities in this game, but guys, seriously, mining rocks planet side in the SRV is an absolute snooze fest. I have literally woken up many times with my SRV at a standstill with no idea how long I've been asleep. in fact, this activity could be a possible therapy treatment for the sleep deprived, it's that effective. So for you people in that field, I would consider looking into that. But for the rest of us, what can be done to make this activity more exciting?

I am literally at the point where instead of disciplining my kids with say, grounding them from screen devices, or playing outside with their friends, I may sentence them to driving the SRV for me and mining rocks for a set amount of time. The worst they can do is wreck the SRV and I have to get another one. At best they will find some Antimony or Selenium for me and save me boredom. It's win-win for them and me.

ugh, please don't call that Looting & Crafting activity "Mining" :p

In order to get better results and some visual Variation - especially when seeking high-grade Elements - head down to Geological Sites and loot the sites and their Needle Crystals (or other types as required).
If lower-grade Elements are required, best to trade downwards via a Mat Trader afterwards.

If it's any help, I usually find more material in a short distance at crater rims, rather than driving large distances across flat land.

I believe one of the intended 3.3 features was to replace the RNG rock spawn on planets with a more logical spawn process. However since 3.3 I've just gone to geological sites to gather mats instead & not found any need to hunt rocks. I have just shot at a few rocks if they happen to be nearby.

Same, I find I can sufficient mats from one or two geological sites, sure beats driving around looking for outcrops. Speaking of outcrops I actually thought they had disappeared from the game. The last time I went mat hunting I drove around for a bit and never found one outcrop, maybe I was too close to a geo site or something.

Once you unlock an engineer and you upgrade any module to G5, you should be able to buy the mats required to upgrade that module each and every time you want to. Having you go back over and over again to upgrade more modules using the exact same game play and mechanics is tedious and boring. I get the initial need to work for it, but the sheer number of hours spent trying to find materials to upgrade yet another ship almost makes you not want another ship. Instead you should want another ship, you should want to upgrade all the modules and experiment with everything without spending so much time farming mats. There are so many ways to farm credits that it makes no sense that you cannot buy mats after your initiation into the engineering world and G5 level.

I agree with the following provisos: You can buy only the same module with the same engineering and experimentals. For example, you modify your large Beam laser to long range with the special effect of oversized. After that, you can buy as many large beam lasers with long range/oversized. But if you want a different size laser, with a different effect and/or different experimentals, then you need to buy and then engineer that module.

Apart from that, it does make sense. After all, you can respawn at any station after ship destruction and that station can magically reproduce your entire ship, including anything that has had engineering applied, complete with experimentals. So the 'technology' exists within the game for reproduction of unique modules, I can't see a problem with expanding that 'technology'.

I guess I am strange as I like driving the SRV and hunting down crash sites or other sites as well as rock hunting. I usually go at high speed turn to fast go into spins, see a crater and see if I can fly across it or end up only 3/4 of the way and driving out of it. I guess the game is what you make of it. Just because one person finds it boring doesn't mean we all do.

I was at Actaea today in Sol, which has listed 0.00 gravity. As I was knocking crystals from the growths they were floating away, but my SRV kept falling to the surface as if there was gravity. It made no sense to me. I left, unable to actually grab the mats most of the time. After I left I recalled reading that the wheels force the SRV to the ground with drive assist on. I probably should have toggled it to capture the mats.

I like the SRV, i've driven 16,000km in them according to my stats. But in 3.3 the stuff that is there to find on planets is so easy to find there's just no need any more other than for the sake of it, and if I'm just going for a drive I'm not looking for rocks to shoot unless it's opportunistic.

Your SRV has gravity compensating thrusters inside the wheel hubs. In low gravity they push down, in high gravity they push up.

I so would love to see an SRV that hovers! So I don't have to do spins and get knocked into the air or flipped upside down because there was a pebble in the way. Give me high speed, the hovering eliminiates all the rock rubbish on the ground and you can cover lots of ground in no time. I'd be happy to pay 500k a pop for it, even if it doesn't have combat lasers, just mining lasers.

Your request is a popular one, originally rocks didn't upset the SRV (they had no collision model at all).

I feel the need to look out for rocks adds to the entertainment value, although their collision model often seems too arcadey (ie you just stop or bounce off a bit in a canned way rather than tumbling via the physics model)

I'd be fine with an easier but slower option to move around, maybe a hover-buggy SRV could not go up such steep slopes as the Scarab SRV or something to avoid making the general terrain too easy to navigate.

Git gud at SRV!
It flies.

Have you tried going to a Geological site?
1) you can reliably get G4 elements from needle crystals (except selenium)
2) it's more fun.

You can also visit the distant biological sites (about 1600ly away, then 180kls from entry), that contain almost pure G4 elements, which you can fill up in no time.
Combined with trading down your current stock of G4 elements (bar Selenium) before you set off, you can basically max out everything in a few hours.

I agree, with Guardian modules is already like this... you get the blue print and the other materials only once and then you unlock the module at the technology broker. Engineers should do the same.

I haven't even tried my crater buggy yet, just started about a week ago. Watched youtube vids about searching the alien sites with it but didn't even know it could mine hmmm.
A lot to learn in this game isn't there.
Just tried some mining and went to a station to sell what I had processed only to find I didn't know how to get it out of the ship, I went into panel 4 to the refinery and it had stuff in it so I went to the right of the line (Thinking it would put it cargo) but dumped it I guess IDK. haha sooner or later I'll figure this out.
