Well, it's Chrimble and all, and I've just been happily surprised with a new Nvidia Titan X 12Gb card :) (yup it's not Christmas Day here quite yet but I'm working tomorrow :()

Old card is an AMD 7950 3Gb. I've used AMD exclusively for years, any helpful hints on how to best set Elite up for the new card? Any Nvidia nastiness to sort out? Any point in using the old 7950 in a slower slot for multi-gpu? All ideas welcome :D

Apart from double checking the power supply if it is big enough the experience will be smooth. The card might even need more power to start up than run ED though lol.

The best way to set the card up would be to attach it to a 4K screen. That's the only way you're going to get the most out of it!

Nvidia cards are pretty easy to set up.

You can get their "geforce experience" software that automatically configures game settings, automatically updates the graphics drivers, and also will let you use the "shadowplay" feature (I would strongly recommend using OBS to record/stream).

As already mentioned, you should get a 144 hz monitor, preferably with 2k/4k capability. That's how you are going to get the most out of a titan, because calling a titan running ED at 1080p "overkill" is an understatement.

Make sure to use driver sweeper after uninstalling the AMD drivers and installing the Nvidia ones. Totally eliminates the possibility of old driver software screwing things up.

AMD cards (and their current lineup of drivers for that matter) are good, but they don't really have a card that competes with the Titan X (or 980 ti).

In the new year there should be some very nice screens available. A Titan should be driving either a 21:9 format 1440 IPS screen, or a 4k IPS screen.

If you do get a new screen make absolutely certain it has G-Sync capability. This is one of the percs you now have with a recent Nvidia card, and it is a wonderful thing.

I would pick a Fury X over a 980 Ti Every day of the year.

Merry solar solstice.

Oh, and since a Titan is already slightly overkill for Elite (as of right now), you can get MSI Afterburner and overclock even more, provided your cooling can handle it. Elite looks good even at minimum settings when supersampled enough ;)

Actually it is not overkill, not with Horizons at 1440p. Ive purchased another one because i want 100fps with Horizons fully maxxed out. Before Horizons one card was more than enough but not know.
As for the 12Gb its handy as ive seen planets when landed on take over 5360Mb of ram! This will also decrease the core clock and lower the fps, ED is the most demanding game i have seen on the Titan X to date.

Fury X is a good card, however AMD is not updating their drivers as frequently as Nvidia does. Also in every test I've seen the 980TI is just performing better.

I'd hesitate to put either Nvida's or AMD's drivers on a pedestal. Both driver sets experience their fair share of chronically unresolved issues and flat-out game-breaking issues from time to time. Hell there is an issue with Nvidia's drivers for ED right now with regards to the 900-series failing to deal with rapid changes in voltage leading to black screens unless you intentionally underclock your GPU.

The Fury X gets much better crossfire performance than the 980Ti does in SLI and dramatically improves in comparison when increasing the resolution. However the 980Ti simply overclocks higher on air or water than the Fury X can in any configuration. It's simply the better card on average.

Personally though I wouldn't buy either at this point with the impending release of all-new GPU technology in the form of HBM 2.0 as well as a node shrink this year. If you put a gun to my head and forced me to buy a GPU I'd grab the 390.

I play with NVidia GTX 970 Strix on four monitors @ 1080p no problems. I would heartily recommend the 970 but am saving for a 980 Ti (not the plain 980, which has a different architecture). I think it has been mentioned but I will say it again for clarity. You need to ensure that your power supply has a high enough power rating (watts) and that it has the correct six or eight pin connector(s) which vary with model. If not you can buy adapters which change molex / sata power connectors to six / eight pin connectors.
Another important and often overlooked consideration is the size of your case. 970 & 980 GPUs are very long cards so be aware. You will also need a PCIe 3.0 slot for maximum benefit (although a 2.0 / 2.1 slot will be fine).
Merry Christmas.

Well, I do not disagree, however waiting for a new model will just that, waiting for a new model. There will always be a new model "next" year. Sometimes one just need to make a decision. Even if the new models come out, it will not impact game play if you buy a GTX980TI now. That card will last for at least 2 - 3 years and make you play on ultra in any game released from now and 2018.

"Pascal" is not a new model. It is a revolution !

;)

OP,

Merry Christmas & enjoy your new card.

Will also be purchasing myself a new one in the next few weeks using monies that I've received, although it'll only be a 970.

Having said that, it will be an upgrade from my current 7950.

5360Mb? Megabytes? What are you measuring, the system allocation or VRAM? I didn't think there was a practical way to see VRAM utilization since it is highly variable based on the scene being rendered and visible textures.

I use my Titan-X to 4K downscale ED to 1920x1200 via the Nvidia display options. Keep anti-aliasing off and max everything else in the ED graphics options.

Sadly not in Elite it doesn't as there is still no AMD Crossfire profile. I speak as a 295x2 owner and I've only been waiting for, oh, the last 12 months. Nvidia SLI profile has been in place since December last year and was recently updated for Horizons.

Very very nice indeed.

Tips....,,1.don't use Nvidia Experience (no need at all plus it makes settings decisions for you, big thumbs down for that) download the latest drivers.
2, once installed double click on the screen and open Nvidia Control panel to make sure the frontier 64bit exe is added. (Should be as this is part of the purpose of the updated drivers)
3, if not present follow Flimleys guide for adding it in. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=215383
4, downloading MSI Afterburner to observe what your card is doing. http://gaming.msi.com/features/afterburner

yes that should make everything good.
