New Hard Point - Search Light

An idea for a non-weapon type hardpoint of a search light. Could operate as a turret (be set to forward, target, or any etc... and would just point the light at your target...). It would be a more powerful light than the ships external lights. I'm thinking those that do rescues or exploration would like these.

Additionally weapon detailing should be able to be chosen per weapon instead of defaulting to all one color. Example, if I want red, white and blue lasers on the 4th of july I could do that (#merica) and search lights could work the same..

Our ship already has lights. I would like a Light module only. That only use by the light. Maybe have infrared and other features that we can upgrade. Maybe Buy different upgrade different levels of brightness.
 
You already have lights you can use if you need them, just turn them on. Also laser and engine colours are available already to buy, it may not be cost effective to put in two extra cdes for the three colours or FDev would have done it before now.

Not sure we need a searchlight, but I wouldn't be opposed to it.

Also, the main headlights on some ships are really poor and could stand for an augment to their brightness. The FDL, as an example, has headlights significantly weaker than the SRV lights.

Agree with you on this one.

One other idea is have is Brighter the light the more chance you can be notice in the Bubble.
 
I would never use a hardpoint for searchlights, but I wouldn't mind having some of our lights be aimable. Might be a nice addition for multicrew functionality so they can watch for asteroids in all directions when it gets dark or something.
 
Right. So these would be in addition to the already existing external lights. I just have several ships that I use exclusively for for doing rescues, exploration, trading, or passenger missions where I don't have weapons on them (if I run into trouble I'll just always run). It's not a need, just think it would be cool. They could operate similar to turreted weapons where you can set them to 'forward' or 'target' and it would just point a light at whatever you're locked on to. Would be helpful to explorers or miners that find themselves in dark places. Would be more like a 'search light' as opposed to just regular external lighting.

Having landed on many a dark surface with difficult terrain, a powerful pointable light would be awesome. Although, to be fair, decent landing lights in general would be a better option.
But a search light would be great for mining probably. And double up as a blinding option to any pirates.
Can we get a 'bat signal' option as well to act as a visual guide for meet ups?
 
Not sure about a light module although the current ships lights are pretty useless.
This could certainly be looked into by Fdev.
 
I like the idea of non-weaponized use of hardpoints. There was a time I suggested a telescope. So that I wouldn't need to travel kLs just to see a planet. Give me a close-up, dammit! If it is interesting, I'll go there anyway...

Also while we're talking about lights - is there any plan to include ship running lights some time in the future? Think that topic has been brought up before in various threads :)
 
I can see this being useful in combat as well. The ship lights just aren't enough when blasting between asteroids at a RES that's in shadow. At combat speed, by the time you get close enough for the ship lights to show what's ahead you're probably about to crash.

Other possible uses:
Defense: If the light is bright enough and the mount is turreted could be use to visually obscure your ship from an attacking vessel.
Mining Camp: If SRV surface mining ever becomes a thing could be used to illuminate the area while you work. Could even set it to track your vehicle from one of panels in your SRV.

This definitely seems like your external light are not on. But I suppose you double-checked that. I don't fly Cutter but any ship I landed on a planet so far with lights on resulted in the ground around me well illuminated.
But it brings me to a related suggestion asked many times before. Please, do add the Lights on/off indicator to the cockpits.
