Wow, they nailed a lot of the problems!
My original yellow X-55 joystick lasted almost 3 years before the yaw spring broke. Too bad that I could not buy one. Thumb controls on the joystick were also pretty 'loose' which I didn't realize until replacing it. Throttle is still good although the 'grease' always required breaking in on the X-55/X-56. Never had any wiring issues. My Blue X-56 is still working OK after a year although joystick yaw centering is still a little off. Add damping in the ED options/controls and it works. Playing gently with the yaw spring on the blue but it looks like that both of these issues are on the problem list that Logitech resolved. We'll see. I just ordered the grey version on
Amazon. Even a two year extended warranty was $1.51 versus $30.00 when I purchased the blue version. The insurance company must have confidence in the new one.
IMO a reliable and accurate X-56 grey (hopefully) is hands down the best PC controller for ED as the switch designs mate perfectly to the option/controls in ED. Ship, SRV, thrusters, targeting, cargo scoop, sensor zooms, UI focus, look around, camera controls (love the two analog sticks for professional video pans and still work as thrusters), maps, lights etc. are all there. SCBs, chaff and heat sinks are programmable by switches instead of fire groups. Keep firing away while popping a SCB and a heat sink. Tell your expensive fighter Pilots what to do. All in the X-56 mode one and you have two more modes you haven't programmed yet. The interface designers totally nailed it. The reliability was always the big issue. But per the excellent interface design I keep buying the things hoping for the best.
Next is the reliable Thrustmaster T16000m which has almost as many control options as the X-56 and is a lot cheaper! It has a linear moving throttle versus a rotating one which takes getting use to but a player can count on it in combat. The Warthog is the most solid reliable build but dedicated to aircraft flight simulation losing commands with their switch designs versus ED with two commands on every toggle switch on the X-56. Items like turn on the lights forward and back to activate the scoop so a player can see what they are scooping! The Warthog also requires pedals for yaw control or customized work around solutions which playing for many hours is more convenient with yaw on on the joystick. Of course a player preference. Total immersion for many require the pedals.
I own all three and the Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS 4 for the PS4 and T.Flight rudder pedals so I'n not just guessing here. Any of them will work well with ED so it's more about aesthetics and personal preferences. Meanwhile let's hope Logitech got it right this time.
Note that my microwave in the kitchen decided that the numbers 5-9 on the keypad no longer work. Probably cheaper to replace it than fix it unless I can find the control panel replacement per a failed IC chip. Like a replacement yaw spring on an X-55 it probably won't be available, Welcome to technology in 2018...
Here's my blank X-55 templates if you want to play with them and see what works for you. They are high quality for printing. Still looking for similar X-56 pictures to update them. I may have to get out the cameras.

Update: Bought the grey on a Friday from
Amazon, arrived on Sunday. I've never seen a Sunday delivery before.
