New NPC Behaviour

I've learnt something, but I'm not sure what. You have to put your SRV in the ship at some point. Don't forget, I wasn't under attack before I started to dock the SRV. It came afterwards without warning, and happened mainly during the time I was stuck in the elevator.. The only lesson I can think of is never dock your SRV. Instead, you logout and login back to basic ED so that you always arrive back safely in your ship. Do you have another suggestion that might help me to reach the nirvana of gitting gud?

There's a bug with Skimmers, they no longer show if they are wanted or clean, and you have to guess. Illegal data scan of a private terminal results in a Bounty, so any authority or aligned ships in the vicinity will kill you if they can.

However, teh suggestion to dismiss your ship and then let the SRV get popped is a good one, you will just appear back in your ship already in orbit. You need to go back and repair the SRV, but thats chump change compared to a rebuy and any other loss because of it.

Something to watch out for. Anybody else experienced this?

I was doing regular surface scan missions. I was on my way back to the ship in the SRV taking minimal fire from a skimmer, like normal. Just as I got to the ship, I noticed three ships appear on the radar. I pressed the "board ship" button, then, while I was rising into the ship I heard a couple of dull thuds. By the time I was in the pilot's seat, the shields had gone and my hull was going down fast. I tried to lift off, but the ship was glued to the ground, so all I could do was sit there for a couple of seconds until the ship exploded. Here's the log. No dialogue at all, just instant attack during the time I couldn't do anything about it. If they had opened fire before I arrived at the ship, I would have dismissed it, but they didn't start until I was in the elevator.

From the log, less than one second to get down my level 5 reinforced class 4A prismatic shields with two level 5 engineered boosters, and 13 seconds to finish my hull. That's 15 seconds from when I pressed the "board ship" button to dead, and it must take something like 12 seconds before you have control of the ship thereafter. Bear in mind that the attack didn't start until after I had started to board the ship.

Basically, that was just an instant execution with no chance to fight back - not even a warning to say that they were after something.

I have experienced a similar problem in 2.4

Near a base with skimmers, there has parked an authority ship. As soon as i've attacked the WANTED (!) skimmers, the authority ship has taken off and started firing at my SRV.
It did even shoot at me after i was back in ship. But i didn't have committet a crime?!?

Now in 3.0.2 it is even worse. The behavior is still the same but the skimmers no longer show if they are wanted or not. I know only through shooting at them if it's legit or not. Absolutely RNG.
But at the end it doesn't matter. If there spawns anywhere close to me an authority ship (parked or flyi g) it will engage me instantly if i attack skimmers. No matter if it's done legit or not.

I still like to make a bug report about that but i need to collect proper footage before :(

I have experienced a similar problem in 2.4

In 2.4, the ships landed near an outpost were of the same faction as the outpost and were system authority, meaning that they could (and did) attack you whether you were wanted or not, and if you fought back you would become wanted for attacking a clean ship. They attacked you simply because you were attacking their faction.

Now in 3.0.2 it is even worse.

If you scan the ships landed near outposts now, you will see that they are wanted, and on the occasions that I have done (illegal) scans, the landed ship does nothing, not even take off. Frankly, now you can fly in, destroy the landed ship, blow up any turrets, shoot any skimmers, and you'll suffer no more consequences (maybe a few hundred more assault bounties if any turrets or skimmers are not wanted) than if you simply scanned the beacon.

I don't know if it's intentional or a bug. Personally I just land, shoot skimmers if present (they are always wanted in my experience), go back to my ship and fly away.

To reiterate, the OP's experience sounds very similar to how NPC pirates in the ambush scenario that sometimes occurs with space salvage missions now behave. They are much more aggressive than in 2.4, attack without scanning (and thus effectively without reason, other than that they are pirates), and seem to have pretty powerful weapons. Again, perhaps this is intended, perhaps a bug, but I cannot see the merit in having NPCs able to destroy players in seconds with no real opportunity for the player to fight back.

I've had this happen to me before when I first started doing surface base missions and especially surface salvage missions, it was not common, but it did happen from time to time. I got used to dismissing my ship.

Make sure the SRV storage module has a very low power priority in the module power pecking order. Very embarrassing to dismiss your ship only for it to stall because the SRV module has power priority over the thrusters. Been there, seen it, bought the post card.

I was well clear of the base when this happened. I had run out of range of the skimmers and turrets. Nothing was shooting the SRV or the ship at the time I boarded.

We've all come under attack at times when doing base scans. Don't get this event confused with them. I've done thousands of base scans and assaults before, and I've encountered every type of scenario described above, but this event was something different. As I said before, look at the log, then compare it with any log of when you've come under atack by ships. It's completely different. It's absolutely empty. No dialogue, no time for shields to go down, nothing, just shields down, hull down, dead in a few seconds. There's not even a clue to who was attacking.

Here it is again to save you looking it up:

It does seem suspicious. ATR hit squads could be a thing! But why target you? Bug? It’s interesting though.

Certainly sounds wrong to me, the OP knows his beans and for an engineered ship with 4 pips to shield to be killed that fast giving the player no chance to react is not good game play.
