New Nvidia Graphics card needed, ~$150 to spend.

I need a new Nvidia graphics card, my current Nvidia card is a GTI 610 I think.

Best frame rate I have seen is 20fps.

I only want to spend about $150, probably a GTX740?

Anyone using one of these?
What sort of fps are you seeing?

Edit:-More info.
My Mother Board only has a PCI Express 2.0 x 16 graphics card slot.
So boards that want PCIe 3.0 would be a waste, I think.

spend 50$ extra and get a 960 if your on a budget, so far above a 740 or a 610 its not even worth comparing :p

If you're on a budget, don't buy Nvidia, it's that simple.

You could probably get yourself a 270X for around $150 which is better than a 750ti and comparable with a 960 in some benchmarks. So for your budget an ATI card is the much better option.

If you don't mind sitting next to a hotplate with hurricane force fans. quite frankly, the sound of the amd cards ruin the immersion of the game :)

Honestly? yeah, echoing everyone who says "save up". the 970 has basically become the new baseline card.

You might be having other problems than just your graphics card. I have the 560Ti on an i7, and I get 40 or so fps. Some stutters here and there. Still, I agree with everyone who says to save up for the 900 series card. I'm waiting until at least summer, though, since ATI is planning a big spring release. Maybe the ATI cards will be the cheese, but whatever happens, prices on the competing cards will drop.

Well the OP was specific in that he needed a new NVidia graphics card. Some of us are just like old hounds in that regard. I won't even consider anything but a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, a Sony TV, Intel CPU's, NVidia GPU's and a host of other things I've become loyal to. A character trait my wife very much appreciates I'm sure.

@OP - note that if you're upgrading the card, ensure your PSU can provide enough power - you *may* need to also upgrade the PSU for the new card.

It would be very foolish to buy a 660... I have it and it's not enough. It was a budget card when it came 2 years ago so why anyone recommend it is a mystery.
Spend another 50 euros and buy GTX 960. It only requires a 400w PSU.
Or the 750ti which is based on the new Maxwell tech..

I agree with Insomnia
Look around and you should be able to find a deal/rebate/sale etc.. to drop the price a little but even at current retail the extra performance/price is really worth it

I believe I got both my CPU (AMD FX-6300) and my GPU (AMD Radeon R9 200 series) in a combo package deal for around $300. Of course I was building my system around Christmas time and there were plenty of deals going around, but honestly I can't complain about my AMD setup. Even though you may be an nVidia fan, you should check into the Radeon R9-200 series. With my setup I get about 45-60 fps on playing Elite.

I'm on 460sli right now and my game is on high graphics settings. He should always stick to 60's (or 50's at a push) otherwise he will end up having to turn things down on his games. If he cannot afford a 760 then a 660 is fine. The gaming bar isn't that high yet except for a very small number of games. He would get 2 years out of the 660. A 660 is a 750 is a 840 is a 930.
.
He should shop around too because a 660 is only £110 here if you buy off the net so he might well be able to get a 760. US prices are a little cheaper than ours too.
.
Nobody has asked what CPU he is using? This is important because many cards will pair up with a CPU's on-board graphics if he buys the right one.

Really, stop lol. I still have a 660 and it still doesn't make the cut. I am looking for a new GPU, and I don't have a fetish towards 4k or mega ultra ini tweaks. I just wanna play with a solid 50+ FPS in most of my games.
And no, he won't get another 2 years from a gpu that's already been on the market for 2 years!
I will say no more... But don't buy a 660. Save up to 960. It's only 50 euros anyway.
.
Btw there is no 8xx series on desktop PCs.

True, but from experience I know it's better to have an open mind when it comes to GPU manufacturers. I'll happily buy either NVIDIA or ATI depending on which is offering better bang for buck at the time. By insisting on NVIDIA he's potentially doing himself out of 10-15 FPS, all due to brand snobbery.
