New Planet Tech is KILLER of Exploration (all terrain is tiling/repeating/not procedural/random)

if they have about 500 assets that will be randomized in an epic permutation it could work. In its current state they look like theyre being reused over and over again so much that it takes away the random feeling.

They might have 500 or even more...but in an almost infinite galaxy only porc. Gen. can really create unique patterns.

I get peoples frustations, I really do. However, when Horizons dropped the planets weren't too bad, but then after some patches they got really bad and boring (beige). Horizon planets now are pretty good. They went through phases and changes, just like Odyssey will. Should it have been all done and dusted at release? Maybe. But anyone that has been around for a while know how FDev work on Elite, its a process, it will take time to fine tune. The thing is how "we" the community act is just as important. Stamping feet, calling the Devs "lazy" or "stupid" etc etc. That isn't feedback.

How we behave does matter...excusing this release and saying everything is good (which I see your not doing but others do) will not bring change - if everyone were happy why fix things?

How did you miss all Dr Kay Ross's stream interviews?

For science!

I think the argument is, is it better to have a galaxy of planets that have repeating details and are 'boring', or a single star system of unique planets?
I don't mind boring planets. I'd take a boring and unique one over a copy pasta 'fun' one.

As far as handcrafted goes, yes, there's one place they could do that fully and that's Sol. Obviously.

The ideal situation for me would for most to be plain and uninteresting, making those that have some spectacular features stand out more (but reeled in a bit from some of the whackiness observed in Horizons-- this isn't Star Citizen, and it also ain't No Man's Sky). When I say features I mean for instance one huge canyon system or a massive mountain range, not covering half or even the entire surface.

On a planetary level it's more dynamic to have extreme regions localised, rather than be global.

I mean yes, for the half-eaten cookie effect we have irregular potatoes, and maybe at some point they can go smaller still with large asteroids.

If this cloned tiles system is indeed intentional as it is now, then it could also be that extreme features like a huge canyon would look even more obviously fake if the maths goblins created a planet with that same canyon three times. One would assume though there's are exceptions in the code to tell it "Never have this feature more than once." (one does wonder why this isn't in effect now for the interstellar chickens, space cats and galactic dragons)-- but even then a dramatic region would be remembered and easily noticed again on another planet. I mean we've seen the same regions on multiple planets as it is now so..

You can't have copies of the same planet in different systems, if there is only one system.
:sneaky:
I'm personally keeping SC out of this. This is not the standard I was holding fdev for. This is also why I like this community - because the majority ... see things as they are now. SC is a train wreck, but it did not became that overnight...the community there allowed it to happen.

Hmm, was just out testing the new patch (slight increase in FPS (y) ), found a ice planet without discernable pattern....

Then I landed, wanted to find the 3 bio signs, instead 5 settlements 25k out in the void...

Yeah, sure :(

You seem to be referring to the new rock scattering system? As far as I remember there was never really an expectation for it to be 100% procedural or exhaustively diverse. Some of the rocks in EDH were also the same repeated patterns. And I am not surprised EDO also includes a number of discrete elements that can be repeated on that front etc.
The problem with rocks in Horizons was that they didn't share the terrain material and therefore didn't merge well with the ground. However, the ground itself was much more varied. In Odyssey you see the recurring patterns because they stand out so much against the flat and uniform terrain, undoing the improvements on the shader side.
