Newcomer / Intro New Player Needs Information

Hello,

I would be obliged for some information if someone could help.

I bought Elite Dangerous a good few months after it’s original release. I had installed it and setup key bindings and my HOTAS + VoiceAttack (and voice packs). But I never actually started playing. I didn’t have the time, so uninstalled it.

When Horizons was released I bought that and voice packs, but still didn’t play the game.

The exact same happened when Odyssey was released. I bought that and have now installed the game at last.

What I’ve got so far is ED Odyssey + VoiceAttack + HCS Astra 2.0 Remastered + Gravity voice packs.

Everything set up with my T Flight HOTAS X and VoiceAttack and HCS voice packs.

Everything seems fine.

What I would like to know is, Does running ED Odyssey prevent me from being able to start and play ED from the very beginning ?

Long winded I know, but I’m an old pilot now and need things explained.

Thanks in advance.

No.

There will be an introductory on-foot mission/tutorial, then you will spawn at a ground station (can't remember its name) with a vanilla Sidewinder and 250,000 credits.

That's a lot better than the original release, money-wise - 1,000 credits - but not significantly different in terms of gameplay.

No, as stated above.

Yes, Elite runs in linear time so any event that started since the game launched is over unless it is still going.

Unlike most "games" there is no path or progression you have to follow (I am looking at you NMS!). Once you complete (or "esc" out of) that annoying on-foot tutorial, the galaxy is your mollusc of choice.

Thanks for that insight. But if I'm docked somewhere (eg. a station) and pause or quit out of game. Do I start off where I was on reloading game (say next Day) ?

Does all that you all have said also apply to solo play ?
Welcome to Elite.

Once you get seated in your ship, you will notice a clock, top right. It's in UTC/GMT but for the year 3310. The universe keeps ticking to the rhythm of that clock. Suns set, suns rise, orbital mechanics...err... follow Newtonian rules. Humanity err... happens https://www.elitedangerous.com/news/galnet

Being in Solo, has only one effect. You won't see other players in your game instance, but you will still see their influence. That price on the stock market will be lower if someone else just sold a whole cargo load, or higher if the system hasn't been getting deliveries of something they need. The missons on the board are affected by the political situation, if other players have triggered a war, they will be combat rewards, if a natural disaster occurred they'll be emergency deliveries. It's referred to as the BGS (Back Ground Simulation) and it's something to have fun with later.

If you choose not to play in Solo, for example you get invited to a private group, you should now see the other players in that private group in your instance. Should you choose to play in Open, you may find any other player in Open in your instance. Sometimes it nice to say Hi, sometimes it's annoying if they steal your cargo and leave you breathing, sometimes it's frustrating if someone has built a ship just for killing other players, and you last approx 3 secs. Mostly however, unless you are heading to somewhere where other players frequent, then you won't see anyone. In 10yrs the entire playerbase combined has managed to explore 0.6% of the galaxy, however lots of action happens close to the human occupied "Bubble".

Further out, we managed to find 2 alien races. One looks extinct, the other... well, we are human; currently the war is going well. This probably means something bad is about to happen. The developers (FDev) are about to release an upgrade to PowerPlay which is all about humans squabbling amongst themselves, so now is a great time to start building yourself some experience. Just get out there and trade, bounty hunt and run some missions, or if you prefer a more stately pace (many of us are not teenagers) then grab a fuel scoop and start exploring, find planets, enjoy the views and if you make it back in one piece, sell the information you scanned for money too.

See you in the Black.

Yes. There are a few places you might move, e.g. away from a hot star, but usually exactly where you were.

Oh one more thing knowone has mentioned.
If you do choose to go out into the black and explore, beware.... space madness.!
If you find after a few mths out there, your talking to yourself alot, hallucinating, a deepest feeling of being utterly alone, do nothing & be at your peril! Head back to the bubble and all might be well.
Perhaps you may not suffer as such. Some of us are lucky.
The black is unique.
Strange, quiet, dark, creepy.
Do explore the guardian sites alone. Experience terror lol.
Do enjoy the sound effects. Their awesome.
Consider exobiology as a past-time. It pays extraordinarily well.

Yes.

You can think of the three play modes as filters on the number of players you might encounter. Solo is just you, Private Group is other signed up members of the group, Open is anybody playing at the time. However the way the game networks means that you won’t encounter everyone playing just those that the game can connect you with.

But there is only one live model of the galaxy and economy regardless of mode.

Thanks for that insight. But if I'm docked somewhere (eg. a station) and pause or quit out of game. Do I start off where I was on reloading game (say next Day) ?
There is no pause, if you go into the menu headed by RESUME the game is still happening to your ship.
If you go to the menu headed CONTINUE or quit to desktop you have left the game and your ship disappears from the game. If you do this with your ship docked or landed you will be in the same place when you log back in, if you were in flight there are situations where you will be moved a few kilometres away to avoid things like your ship appearing inside a rock.

If you logged out landed on a planet in broad daylight it is quite possible that you will log back in in pitch darkness depending on the planets orbit and rotation.

Yes and no...
1) there is no pause. If you "pause", things still happen to you(r ship). Only if you log out at least into the main menu, things will stop happening to you.
2) If you log out, things will stop happening to you. No matter where you are at that point. I.e., you can log out landed on a planet or floating in space. If you are under attack, you will have a timer which will keep your ship in the instance for some time (a measure to mitigate combat logging). If you are in a dangerous area (you'll find out what they are), your ship will be moved to a safe zone when you log in again.
Next day, next week, next year - doesn't matter.

But: the rest of the shared Galaxy will move on. Market prices will change, mission timers will run, political games will continue, planets will move in their orbits, the overarching game story will move on. If you miss, for example, the defeat of a Thargoid Titan, it's gone. No way to repeat it.

This goes for each of the game modes - open, group or solo. As the only difference between these three modes is who you might meet in the Galaxy:
open = everyone who also is in open, plus NPCs
group = everyone else in the group, plus NPCs
solo = NPCs only

Most times when I run the launcher and get to main menu there is no connection to servers.
I had already done the Odyssey on-foot mission a couple of hour ago an ended up at Chaberlni's Rest then I exited the game.
But now every time I run the game I'm getting no connection to servers.
Any help would be great.

I'd be inclined to think that this is most likely some kind of networking issue. I haven't seen it myself nor have others reported problems today, so most likely something local to you. You could have a look in the options -> networking menu to see if something sticks out. Otherwise your best bet is probably customer support: https://customersupport.frontier.co...5953243666-Connectivity-troubleshooting-steps (notice the small submit request at the bottom of the page).

Sometimes it takes a minute for the servers to connect when you launch the game to the main menu. Give it some time and if still the case, contact support.

I would also recommend looking into port forwarding on your router. While not mandatory, it can sometimes help. You can find a very helpful guide here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threa...imizing-multiplayer-connection-issues.583861/

I'm looking at available transport mission on mission board but I'm not sure what I'm really looking at.
It explains who an where to make delivery, it states how much mission is worth but what does the 'icon 6' then icon and what looks like a 5 graded bar (with three of them filled).
If someone could make this a bit clearer for me please.

Read this article :)

In general, you have various types of rewards - some benefit you (for example pay you money or materials for engineering) and some benefit the faction that gave you the mission (for example they get increased political influence in the system).

The bars indicate the impact of the rewards. 3 out of 5 means it's average impact to your reputation with them (star icon) or their political influence (arrows pointing outwards).
