New player, where is everyone?

Started playing today but have either not encountered another player or people mostly mind their own business? Are people too spread out exploring or doing other activities?

open. Is there an area where people usually hang out, like a trade hub?

The game is run as a Peer to peer network between players. The 'modes' (Open, solo, group) are just matchmaking flags to help the P2P matchmaking program match people to others with the same 'interaction level'.

This is not a client/server game like WoW, where there are lots of people running around willy nilly...

There is also the idea that roughly 700k people are spread out over 400 billion star systems.

I think you meant 700 people..

Goto a popular system, usually Altair or Lave and the surrounding systems have players in them

Just say hi in chat to everyone and you'll get a response*

Bill

*Disclaimer: do not blame me if the response is quad railguns to the face

In a station look at the news side of the "services" screen and read the shipping report (or whatever its called). That tells you the number of Commanders (i.e. human players) who have passed through the system in the last 24 hours. Most people spend about 10-15 minutes in a system (well, I do) so if there's been 24 players in the last 24 hours you've got one chance in 6 of being there when another player was and he may not have been in space when you were. I'm not that far from there, hanging around near Gilgamesh. I only see one or 2 CMNDs a week.

If you really want to see lots of Commanders, use the Galaxy Map navigation screen and visit Lave - the original start system in the original Elite game. It's a dangerous galaxy out there though.

Out of a friends list of about 50 I've only seen 2 of them (the same two) online in the last month. I also went a whole week without seeing a single human player a couple of weeks ago. Numbers, or at least from my perspective have tanked massively since 1.3 dropped/flopped.

I see plenty of commanders every day, especially in Powerplay-related systems. It might also depend on your part of space; I get the feeling most commanders hang out in the Empire. :)

Like they said above...

-Go to a 'popular' place like Lave or the cluster of rare goods systems in the surrounding area. You'll see CMDRs there.
-Join a faction and participate. You will see them there too. Especially if you like to undermine.
-Watch out for community goals, those are player magnets.

*But be careful what you ask for, you just might get it. Space is apparently full of (a)holes.

PS-
Make sure you have the cash on hand for a couple of rebuys.

Better yet, load up some cargo. Then jump a few systems. You will meet really nice people then. Just look for the blue screen of interdiction...

Be happy not to see others. Out of 3 I saw in open since I play, two of them started the fire against me ... But the other one at least wrote me "hello" :D

Since then, ED is for me a massive multi player solo game (MMSG)

But if OP is not able to see anyone, it looks more like a technical problem.

Just a quick question to OP. Aren't you behind two NATs ? It is a relatively common case in so-called "community networks", where you have setup like this:

Your home network - NAT - community network - NAT - Internet

If this is the case, you will not see anyone in Open, never. The game simply cannot tunnel through multiple NATs.

I can only speak for myself but the fact is I have stopped playing as I am personally waiting for content to be added for my style of play, which is more of a Lone wolf style and not this competitive mis-match we have right now ..

This "bringing people together" mentality has done just the opposite in my view and driven players away.

Once more content for the game has been added that isn't injected solely for multi-player reasons I will log back in and most likely fall in love with the game again. :)

Be nice and eat cake.
