NEW SHIPS...Help the developers and investors out. Invent a ship that does not have an ability that is not covered by the existing ships. Make it so that it is not a ganker's paradise (outperforms existing ships), then invent a purpose for your new ship. Once you have done that, invest a large amount of time and money developing it. Then sell it to FDev and expect to get zero profit back (or make a loss), then you will be in the same position as the developers. Personally I would prefer fewer bugs, more activities and more things to find out in the black using existing ships.
What are you hoping that these new ships will give you? Are you just looking for something shiny or do you have a specific need for a new ship?
SC has loads of new ships for one purpose only. They want to sell them to you for real money and make a profit. Do you want ED to go the same way?

Optimum load out for AX would be C2 hardpoints only so I’m envisaging 3 pairs of C2s, staggered along the roof of the ship. I’m also envisaging a poor shield multiplier such that running HRPs would be great for AX combat but shields wouldn’t be anywhere near PvP levels.
Given the Constrictor was a military prototype in the original Elite, I think now would be the perfect time to bring it back as a medium-or-large sized AX Protoype with three pairs of C2 hardpoints staggered along its “spine” for maximum DPS potential and 6 Utility slots for xeno scanner, field neutraliser and plenty of heat sinks.
C7 PP so that armoured or low emissions are viable options but a C6 PD so as not to encroach on the Kraits. It should be fast, though. Like Mamba fast. Maybe even C7 thrusters if the mass requires it.
The balance should be a rubbish shield multiplier and a good number of the internal slots would be military so that it wouldn’t be any good for cargo / passenger stuff.
I’m thinking a single C6 (AMFU), two C5s (MRP and Weapon Stabilizer), 5 Military C4s (HRPs) and then a C2 and C1 (further MRPs) That would give you a few options whilst still requiring some choices between limpets / AMFU vs overall hull numbers.
Based on that, I would pitch the base armour at around 2500 with Military Composite Heavy Duty / Deep Plating engineering, in order to hit around 5.5k for a typical build (as I propose above) or less if you want to sub in some limpets. Though that would likely require reducing module protection or dropping the Weapon Stabilizer, so it’s not an “all powerful” design.

Sure the Phantom has out classed the Asp Explorer, but ships are what we make them to be. I use the Phantom as a combat ship even though the krait mk2 are a better option.
In the real world there is always new and better cars that out class each other, I don't see why we have to wait this long for new ships especial in a galaxy where space flying are the main thing.
For starters, all of the fed ships could get new roles, if they freed up the military slots, same for the alliance ships.
I would like to see new combat ships, in the small to medium range.

I like the large explorer / “Ship Launched SRV” ideas!I'd like to see a very large explorer / science vessel that can out jump the Anaconda with better cockpit views and would carrier a landable SLF type vehicle that doubles as an SRV when landed, and also a science station from which you can send probes to ALL bodies whether landable or not, Not much to ask for
And what's up with Saud Kruger? There's a war going on people need rescuing, so build a ship that's as fast as an Orca, carries at least as many as a Python (80+54), has caustic resistant armour and fits on a medium pad and for balance so it's doesn't nerf the Orca (which should be medium anyway) has NO hard points.![]()

Or every single ship kit and paint job to make them look different. As there is a ship capable of every single thing you can possibly try to do in the game, there's no need for "new" ones to be added - you can buy and modify new ones to you.Where new ships?
