The rubber membrane probably perished. You can buy replacements for like £5.

i just bought another no it wasnt the membrane.........
oddly i did not buy the first one i found it in a skip with just a bit of broken insulation which i taped up
i could afford an expensive hotas but i find i am just better with a cheap x box controller (fa off cold orbits etc) prob due to mus mem with an xbox pad
tried a mates virpil and found a hotas is just not not for me anymore(still got an old forcefeedback ms sidewinder gathering dust)
i also dont fly a desk but a leather recliner which a pad is just bettersuited to so just that and voice control for mudane things like landing gear,lights and ship panels etc
