New version of Elite for PS5?

I wonder, when the PS5 comes out, will we be getting a new version of Elite on the PS5?

I know we will probably be able to run the PS4 version on the PS5 as it will be backwards compatible, but in order to get the most out of the better hardware it seems like a better version of Elite might have to be made for the PS5.

I could be wrong about this, and I hope I am. I'm hoping we just get an update to the PS5 for game we have already bought that will improve Elite's graphics, stability, and make it run optimally on the superior console.

Also, if there is a better PS5 version of Elite, we'll have to consider that if we buy it, our data/ships won't transfer over to the PS5 version.

We'll most likely see PS5 and Scarlett versions released which include more of the stuff which was cut back for the previous console releases. t's pretty standard fare when a new console releases to see popular games on the previous one get updated versions released for the new one. How early in the new console's life cycle the new version comes out will often also determine if the older version gets backwards compatibility support. If say, there's no announcement of an ED client for the new consoles in the first year they are available, then we may see for example, the XBox One version work on the new XBox hardware, with it effectively treating it as if it's running on an X, though probably with the "quality" mode running with similar performance to the "performance" mode. If a new console client is announced right away though, then that's something we probably won't see, as other games will be prioritised for support.

Hopefully but, of late (Planet Zoo) consoles seem to have taken a back seat at Frontier towers.

I am not sure how a patch to the existing version would work as while the PS5 will be backwards compatible its not like the current gen PS4 to PS4 Pro (or Xbox One to One X). Its a new machine, so my guess for it to take full advantage of the console a new version would be needed. Not sure Frontier will want to do that.

Loading times etc should be vastly improved like the Spider Man demo they showed, which was basically Pro version running on PS5.

We may just be left with the PS4 version (which should run better if Sony implement a way to automatically make use of the PS5 power and we know load times will be improved due to the better SSD hardware).

This might not necessarily mean any better graphics etc but just a better more stable performance of the quality mode already available on Pro. We would probably want more though.

So while there will be probably some automatic benefits, we would probably need a re-work for the PS5, would we need to buy a new PS5 version? More questions than answers....

I doubt you'll see a revised Elite Dangerous for PS5. It'll probably be a straight port of PS4 Pro.
What I would suspect would happen is the 2020 Elite update will be targetted for a PS5 launch as Elite 2.0 with a downgraded experience being available (EBL included especially for Old Duck) for the older consoles. It is the same base architecture so games should be able to run different quality / performance levels

I wouldn't be surprised is the 2020 update was tuned for PS5 and PS4 will get steadily phased out by not getting the DLC.
Cough, Mac, I'm looking at you...

My guess is that a few years into the new consoles' lifespan, when a new version of the client has been out for the new consoles for a while, and a bunch of players have switched over, we'll see them eventually phase out support for the XBox One and PS4 versions with new patches. It won't be as soon as 2020, but it'll be there in a couple of years. Same as for every other game which spans a couple of console generations.

Depends on Sony's policy on backwards compatibility too. If it's similar to Microsofts policy to 360 games on the Xbox one we may get visual enhancements on the PS4. Have Sony said anything on the potential for visual upgrades to PS4 games in the new hardware?

However I very much doubt we'll see anything like PS5 specific DLC for a PS4 product. Sony have been quite strict that if it's labelled PS4 it provides the same content for both models. I imagine there will be a clear distinction between the 2 platforms.

I think we have to hope for a PS5 specific port. Hopefully the continuation of x86 and AMD graphics architecture means the development environment doesn't change too much.

A new client for the new hardware just makes good sense for Frontier. Sales of it will not only recoup the cost of continuing development on the game to take into account the new hardware, but bring in more potential new players as well. Naturally they're likely to continue supporting players using the previous gen hardware or the previous gen software on the new hardware via backcompat, but sooner or later, maybe 3-4 years down the line from now, most of the console playerbase will have migrated to the new hardware, and those still using the previous gen version will be facing constraints of the old client not being able to fully leverage the new hardware's capabilities, and keeping both updated will cease to be viable to Frontier

I'm not sure how it works, but from what I've heard the PS5 will be capable of improving upon PS4 titles visuals. It may work similar to those AI scripting programs they used on the PC version of FF7 that improved the backgrounds by taking what was there and re-texturing it so it has more resolution and didn't look like a hair clog in a drainpipe.

I'm not versed in the technical stuff but I understand just enough to make it sound like I know what I'm talking about. lol

A lot of the PS5's capabilities are probably hype right now. Every new console is advertised as the "best gaming console ever made".

I'm just looking forward to the SSD and near instant load times it brings. Makes me wonder if Hyper Jumps will be near instant on the PS5 too? That's one "load screen" I actually don't mind looking at for a few seconds.

Eh, I always choose a balance when it comes to storage space vs load speed, that's why my consoles use hybrid drives, to take advantage of the solid state cache when loading my most frequently recently played games, and everything else loading off the 7200rpm drive, but then also being able to store a couple of hundred installed games on it, and not having to pay £800 for that amount of storage capacity in the form of SSDs.

My PS4 has an SSD, and it's faster no doubt (even faster than the Pro), but no where near instantaneous. A PS5 will be faster still due to improved I/O bus, but many of our "loading screens" in ED are based on computational and bandwidth limitations rather drive speed.

Why wouldn't it? All my character info from GTAv online transfered from ps3 to PS4. I'm not seeing a difference

Yeah, this.
While they impose these limitations on transferring between platforms, generally a one-time one-way upgrade between console generations is fairly industry standard at this point. There's very little on a technical side which should stand in the way of it. And usually the platform holders have a lot in place to smooth this kind of transition.
