New VR recommendations

I currently have an original Vive that has served well but is pretty dated. I was going to wait to see what Valve comes out with next, but who knows if and when that will actually happen. Now one of the lighthouses is starting to go, I can get a replacement easily enough, but maybe this is the time.

I currently have a 4080 and a Ryzen 3800x based system, but I have a new i7 147000kf system I just need to set up when I have the time. I mostly play sitting for ED and occasionally Il2 or DCS, but I do want room scale because I also like some FPS games or more physical games too.

1. The Quest 3 sounds good, with the upgraded head strap. My main intention is for PCVR so I suspect I don't need the 512gb version. Tetherless sounds nice, but it sounds like I will still need the cable for Elite / steamVR games anyway.

2. Valve Index. I was thinking of the Index originally but it is starting to get long on the tooth by now. I am sure it will still visually be a huge upgrade from the Vive. For comfort, build quality, tracking and controllers it is still the best according to some sources.

3. Big Screen Beyond with my Vive tracking stations and controllers. I do wear glasses so I'll have to wear my contacts or get the prescription lenses. I am getting old enough that I am going to need reading glasses / progressive lenses soon so I don't know how that would work.

4. Others? I am in Canada so the Pico is not an option. Wait for the next Steam product? Pimax?

If anyone has gone from the index to the Quest 3, I am curious about the comparison.

As long as you still have a pair of monofocals that work for you at the focal length of the HMD, you should be good -- usually somewhere between one and two metres. Keep the progressives in the real world, where things are at different distances for real. :9

Stuck waiting/hesitating for something to move on to from my Index, myself, so I've got no testimonials of my own to share, I'm afraid. :7

Edit: Can't recommend the Reverb as a new purchase after all, as it's environment has been deprecated (WMR).

I recently switched from the HP Reverb G2 to a Quest 3 and would not go back to the G2 now. The Q3 isn't perfect but no headset is.
The Q3's main advantages for me are wider field of view, better image quality (yes better than the G2 seriously I was surprised but it is definitely better) and not using a cable to the headset (5GHz WiFi connection to my router via Virtual Desktop).
I have the 128GB version with Elite Strap as I'm only interested in PCVR games 512GB is a waste of money for me.
As already said I use Virtual Desktop to completely bypass using the Oculus App and Link which drag performance down and can't provide the image quality of Virtual Desktop, I also enable Virtual Desktop's implementation of Open Composite/XR which for me is superior to Steam VR.
I'm very happy with the Q3 and would definitely recommend.

Thanks for the replies. I hadn't looked into the Reverb, don't really know much about WMR but sounds like thats not an option.

Good stuff about the Quest 3. Leaning more towards that now. I did look up Open Composite, and that looks interesting. If I understand it correctly, Virtual Desktop is the Oculus PC streaming app and Open Composite replaces SteamVR (which I have no commitment to - it is just a tool). I see thete is a version of the elite strap with a battery. I wonder if that may help with balance / comfort.
