I'll buy some and the scanner too but I won't fire untill fired upon.
I want to be on their friendly side as long as possible, just out of curiosity.
I wonder if you can solo defeat a Thargoid though, SDC was in a wing of three.

Perhaps a super heavyweight corvette/cutter could survive long enough?
In a medium sized ship with adequate shields and hull, it should be possible. I can't do more than disable a couple of hearts and keep them half dead in a Cutter. Too big of a target, too slow to turn. With the proper skill, it would work but I don't have the skill.
Sadly, I'm better in a Cutter than anything else. Not because of the tankiness, but because I can handle the drift. Dem Goids dont care.

So my long range battle Conda could do it maybe, it's got G5 dirty drives which makes it okayish in manoeuvring while in normal flight.
It's at least a lot more nimble then my Cutter with G5 DD.
As I understand you'll only have to take down it's shields with the ax missiles, the hull takes normal weapon damage too.
In a ship with no weapons fitted they were very aggressive towards me regardless of me remaining passive.
Yeah, give it a go if they attack you. I'm sure it'll still be a bad result, but I've a feeling that a battleconda can do better than I did.

Bummer, there goes my defensive attitude then, I'll just get slaughtered unless I'm in a wing, I play solo btw.
My Conda held out pretty long yesterday when a Tharg went all defcon 5 on me after I probed it with a research limpet.
I'm not gonna try and kill one though, the ax missiles seem to be quite effective against normal ships too so it doesn't hurt getting some anyway.
When one of them attacks me without provocation I'm definitely gonna give it a go, I don't mind the rebuy although it's around 25 million.
I counted on several rebuys by now but still managed to get away so far.
I was attacked a couple times but the only time I provoked one was with the research limpet.

I hear the missiles work against human vessels, too. I'm going to buy a launcher for defensive purposes against human ships.
Is it confirmed that conventional weapons do damage when the shields are down?

Not sure about that, Dusty. I got attacked yesterday by a Tharg, and I never even deployed any weapons, nor did I scan. I was just observing and it attacked me and took me down to 6% hull. How I got away, I'll never know, but I did. I wish I'd captured the video.

Can I buy the scanner / weapons anywhere else or is it just Merope? I ask because I have an active bounty in Merope, (long story but I wasn't the aggressor). I thought that they would be available at ground bases that were military, hi tech and industrial?

Exactly correct. The CG that ended today awarded the weapons be available in Military, High Tech, and Industrial LAND BASES.

Yeah. They kind of work like capital ships. Have to give them some space.
I also wonder if having thargoid or guardian items in your cargo/mats inventory might affect their disposition?
