newbie valve index cant load elite dangerous

so i recieved my valve index today, set up everything. downloaded steam vr. now when I launch elite, (not using steam elite) i get a window in the googles that has a small screen elitedangerous64
and under it it says next up. nothing happens, Am i missing a step?

Have you selected “HMD [headphones]” from the Graphics options in ED?

I did not at first but then found it in another post by frantically searcing, works like a charm now. but my poor mouse! gotta start running elite without the mouse

I had a lot of hard times running the game correctly with any consistency. I now have a pretty good procedure that I follow each time.

1. Plug in base stations to turn them on
2. Get the HMD ready on desk for fast placement on my head
   • If I don't put it on fast, it goes to sleep
   • If It goes to sleep, I have to "Reset the device"
3. Run SteamVR
4. Put HMD on my head really fast
5. Inside SteamVR, show my desktop
6. Run ED Market Connector on my desktop
7. Run my joystick profile on the desktop
8. Go back to SteamVR library and launch the game from there

I have also found the controllers are too much of a pain, so I just click the little button on the HMD and point with my head toward the game and run it that way. The controller battery does not seem to last long at all. The only thing I use it for is to launch the game and it runs out in just a few days.
