newbie valve index user

My valve index is being shipped to me next week! WooHoo! I have one question (so far). I have Elite dangerous installed, Not a steam download. How do i get the index to recognize elite dangerous? Do i have to install steam elite dangerous?

I already told you. ED will launch steamvr by itself, you don't need ED steam version for that, although if you wish you can get one from fdev for free.

Think of Steam as drivers for the Index.
got it today but when i launch elite it says next up, nothing happens, am i missing a step?
I launch steam vr first, then i click on the elite dangerous launcher. all i get is a screen in my environment that says elitedangerous64 and under it it says next up

I had to actually install steamvr initially, just like you would any steam game before I could use my HMD. I am using a Vive Cosmos though and not a valve index.

I am still waiting for mine, only 5 weeks left from the 8 weeks they told me on the 9th of March ...
With SteamVR installed, set up and running you should just be able to start the game in VR via the desktop. First time you have to enable VR ingame via the HMD Display settings under Display.

SteamVR starts automatically when I launch Elite, but I think I had to enable this in the SteamVR Settings. It was a long time ago.

for switching between settings I use Dr. Kaii's EDProfiler - very usefull if you want to go back to pancake mode to take a few screenshots, and then back inside the ship, it requires a relaunch of the game though. Still, it allows you to prepare all settings with one click, so it saves a lot of fiddling around.

Be aware that VR will not be supported by the next expansion (at launch, may receive support later, old game will keep VR). Hopefully FDev changes their stance on this.

So you launch the game from inside VR - it launchs the... Elite Launcher ;-) where you need to click play - it will launch in 2d first, and you need to switch to hmd mode in graphics setting if I remember correctly and previous posters have also pointed out the excellent DrKaii profiler - it does things much better than FDev code ever did :p

I'm on steam, I just click "launch elite in steamvr mode" when I click on play. And if I remember correctly the "launch steamvr when vr game starts" is on by default. As is desktop theater.

Hi Evang,

I got my Valve Index today and had that problem twice so far. Both times when I peeked at my computer screen I figured it out---> The Elite Dangerous Launcher program was sitting there waiting for me to press the "play" button. Once I did that everything started working.

I did it the following way:
  1. Run steam VR program
  2. In that program, figured out how to show my steam library using that laser pointer hand thing (took a while)
  3. Run Elite Dangerous by pointing with the laser thing
I have been told that I can now launch ED the normal way. They said that once you do that above procedure the first time you don't need to do it again.

However, my biggest advice is to be there when the FedEx guy shows up. I was in the bathroom or something and he left one of those notes on the door. :)

  • Run through steamvr tutorial, you can access it via steamvr menu on desktop, just right-click on it and tutorial will be on top.
  • Switch to steamvr beta, it's not worse than stable ;-) you can do so in steam.
  • If you don't see steamvr home inside your hmd upon launch (a nice cottage in the mountains) you can enable it - go to settings, enable advanced settings and on the bottom of the general tab you will have SteamVR home. Enable it, it's much nicer than the default grid ;-) IDK if it is already present in stable, been on beta for ages now.

Yes I have to go to the building up in the mountains to play ED. I have tried launching ED straight from desktop but it doesn't ever work right. Sometimes the joystick does not work, sometimes the HMD does not work. So now I always go to the mountains first then go to ED.

I don't know if I have the beta, but I have a wall to my right that has a bunch of tiles on it. I think they are the recommended games and other people's screen shots. Like a wall full of ads.

I will look for the beta sometime.

Yeah I should have done tutorial but I was too interested to fly the spaceship in VR. :)
