Newcomer is Done - quitting for a while - maybe for good

After 750 hours of this game I'm out. I just can't see why I would waste one more minute of my life in this game. It's not fun to play. The whole game is rigged to prevent progression. I can't tell you how many times I've ended up in the ship of piety with millions of credits lost to rebuy my ship, and lost reputation that has to be rebuilt to get back to the good missions with ally status. I was making 3 to 4 million an hour doing surface scans but the crazy thing is, you get a reward for killing criminal skimmers, but a bounty for hacking the data port. Tell me that isn't stupid. And then, I was stacking the missions per system to make it more efficient but on the third planet 3 ships popped in to claim my big bounty of 30,000. Now admittedly, I was parked on the planet and went to get breakfast. They attacked while I was distracted.

I know this game is rigged to send you NPC attacks if you have a bounty or carry a load, but doesn't it seem that a large million dollar bounty should draw more attraction that few thousand from hacking data ports? Not that hacking a criminal dataport should incur a bounty at all, but still there should be some level of urgency attached to NPC responses.

Bottom line, this last trip to the ship of piety (and why do we have a ship of piety - that's dumb), and I'm set back to where I was a few days ago. I only get to play a few hours on any day and after getting 6 to 8 million on surface scans I lost it all in one encounter. Down 11 million to rebuy my ship. So it really is two steps forward and 3 steps back with this game some times.

I'll tell anyone reading this the only thing I know to collect credits in this game so you can progress. It's not by doing any of the advertised in system missions in the game. The only way in my 750 hours, that I've EVER made good money was in exploration. Going out in the lonely expanse where no one else is, not even NPC's, and doing planet scans. The most I've made that way was 130 million in one trip that took me about a week. That's credit progression, but a long BORING game play mode.

Good luck commanders. Until the developers quit being afraid of letting people make fun gaining credits in this game and until they realize that new content is the real way to keep gamers coming back then this game is doomed to be boring. I'd love to try out some of those other ships but unfortunately I spent so much time trying to figure out other ways to progress and regress that I realize now my only hope is to return to the road to riches. If I return to the game that is where I'll start. I'll fly the road till I get enough to properly outfit an Anaconda...i'm guessing 350 to 400 million. Never going to get there doing deliveries for 50k...just saying. The mission payouts in this game are a joke for everyone but noobs.

I think this has been your problem, exploration is without doubt one of the slowest ways of making income in the game (if that’s your goal, and excluding ‘road to riches’). In fact your whole statement has it backwards, completing in system missions is most definitely the most profitable ways to play. Simple A to B cargo missions for a faction you’re allied to is capable of surpassing freelance exploration, trade and combat within the first day or so of play.

You’ve been dedicating time to an inefficient and boring activity so I’m not surprised you’ve quit. Still, you got 750 hours out of it...

I have never considered missions to be anything other than a means to get a rank confirmed or as a way of getting a permit or introduction, this has helped me keep my total insurance claims to 59 so far at a cost of 175 million.

How do I make money to afford the rebuys, I do Community Goals, I buy and sell rare goods, I buy and sell ordinary items (but mostly for CGs), I go to RESs and the like and shoot wanted ships for their bounties and I do some Exploration.

What I haven't done since the earliest days is flown without several times the insurance on my most expensive ship, I have not flown passengers often since their introduction as the mechanics of passenger carrying are too similar to missions, when I have taken missions I have tried to avoid taking more than one at a time.

I play Elite to be out flying around and doing various things with my many ships, I am not striving to be the best, richest or whatever. I do of course have goals such as getting access to Sol within 2 more years and eventually having access to all but one of the ships.

I am sorry Elite Dangerous wasn't the game for you and wish you better luck with your next game.

After 750 hours of play, I hope to be considering myself a bit more experienced than newbie. I have a total credit worth of 30m CR and can't see how to make 3-4 mil an hour - unless I start grinding the r2r which, ultimately, would be boring if that's all I did.

lol...

"Got 750h" + "This game is doomed to be boring" just don't match.

..and I don't understand why it took you so long to realize that you don't like the game...!?

Got 250h in-game and absolutely LOVE IT and enjoy every hour I put in it.

I'm really not into the grind and big money / big ship stuff. Still, I have over 150M credits in bank, a DBX, a Vulture and recently bought a Python...they all are A rated (except DBX for exploration) and have some nice engineering...all that without looking for all the "How to make 657M / hour" videos...just playing the game, exploring, making missions...well all legit money ;)

Your problem is perhaps that ED is simply not your kind of game or you don't play it well. I lost ships, had to rebuy but hey...part of the game and it wouldn't be fun it if there was nothing to lose in combat or doing illegal stuff.

Hope you'll find another game that will give you 750h ;)

I am trying to remember what is the last game I played for 750 hours while not liking it..... uhmm ,,,,

I can't tell you how many times I've ended up in the ship of piety with millions of credits lost to rebuy my ship...
And you did not learn from those experiences?

but doesn't it seem that a large million dollar bounty should draw more attraction that few thousand from hacking data ports?
With that I somewhat agree. low value bounties (which in fact are death sentences) should not exist.

I was parked on the planet and went to get breakfast. They attacked while I was distracted.
Are you for real?

That is a choice you made, but exploration is not the only way to make credits. That is an absurd statement.

There is more than enough that needs improving in ED, but you mention virtually nothing about that.
It is hard to fathom what your problem actually is.

I have a similar amount of time in game, frightening in itself, and quite frankly believe you have to actively look for ways not to make money. If I take my T9 out it racks up credits like crazy unless I were to just fly it empty the whole time or use it to explore. The only thing I do that doesn’t make me a tonne of credits are mining and combat, probably because I’m not great at them, but they’re different activities to do and the credits are simply there to be spent some how I.e. rebuys.

It seems to me at least like a binary game, you get it or you don’t.

Just ally up with a few factions in a half decent system. Check out these two local deliveries, they could both be completed in minutes with a Cobra...

And you don’t need an amazing trade rank to get a good return...as you can see, mines currently pathetic...

Can I haz ur stuffs?

I think he wants you to TAKE it from him lol.
I don't want it, i only do NEW stuff [yesnod]

To the TS, start a new profile and just enjoy this game NOT thinking about credits or rep. this game has so much more to offer.
Be well.

You see this type of post on just about every game there is. I'm not sure if it's because they are seeking sympathy or the futile hope that millions will agree and leave "the game" too...

Seriously, if I was that frustrated I would:

a) just leave
b) not post about leaving (noone cares much anyway)
c) find the uninstaller exe

For every one person griping there are hundreds/thousands/millions having a right old blast (pun intended)

Perhaps all that is needed is a break.

And apologies for thrice posting on this thread when one should have sufficed. I'm outro now :D

In my experience it only happens when someone truly loves a game and then falls out of love with it (usually from playing too much).

I used to moderate over on a Skyrim forum, the lead up to that game was immense and when it was released the furumites were in ecstasy for months. Made some very solid friends on that forum. Then, the honeymoon period ended and the people became more and more bitter by the day. Posts like this one became a daily occurrence, they wanted the high back, but it couldn’t be replicated again.

It’s akin to a high school romance. Beautiful at the beginning, poisonous and toxic at the end.

Before you go, have a go at bounty farming, especially if there's a CG for some. You can make about 6 mil an hour with a KWS, and that can go up to 10 mil per hour if you get a good payout from the CG. Also, signing up to one of the two powerplay guys that give 20% extra bounties for level 2 can boost your earnings nicely. It's a lot of fun shooting the bad guys, and it isn't too difficult. Use a fast ship, like a Viper, Vuture or FDL to make the most money and be the safest. the only thing you have to be careful of is shooting the wrong guy, which will happen from time to time. You must watch for it. The moment it happens and you see the assault or murder charge with the "wanted", put 4 pips to engines and two to shields and boost out of there. As long as you react quickly, you'll have time to get away safely, but if you don't notice what you've done and carry on there, you'll get blown up if there are any feds about.

When I started, I never even looked at the mission board until after I'd been playing about 3 months and had about 3 billion. I was averaging around 15 mil per hour with powerplay level 5, but you have to play for about 30 hours a week to make that worthwhile.

Dude, if it's impossible then how are so many people flying big three ships with billions of credits and triple elite?

You fell for the trap of doing a grind which is an illegal activity instead of playing the game.
