Well, being Wanted or picking up a fine runs instantly through the entire Galaxy - so does any Galaxy-wide Reputation you aquire.
It is really a game-related decision to allow for a few 3300 A.D. things (FTL Travel) - while other aspects of the Game work like we're back in the 12th century.
It just doesn't make any sense - and we get to see the Results of that every day.
From a pure gaming perspective, it kinda works of course (as the Player adapts to living in the Information dark ages in these respects) - but it remains highly illogical and very obvious as such.
Having a Ship's log with Trade data storage would be a good compromise - as would Trade Computers that poll System-wide Data for a certain Credits amount (currently that would be 100Cr). And it would still require Pilots to enter these Systems to get up-to-date quotes.
But we'll see if FDev will one day agree to arrive in the 34th century concerning these issues - or remain in the dark ages of information (non-)flow.
All this goes hand in hand with the 1984-style pen & paper game we have now, be it NAV data, System names of interest or that location of the Pristine Metallic belt you made out and want to keep for future reference. Same for aquiring distant Cartographics data, setting "Favorites" in the NAV computer, setting & storing fixed routes etc. etc.
Lots of stuff that either would make sense or just enhance gameplay.
If I am a station in one system, and need something that no one in system makes, why wouldn't I want people from all over to see that, and bring me the materials I need? :S
