Next Elite update

I like the HUD/UI, and never would have used 'cartoony' to describe it. Looks good on my system with 'good graphics'. Each to their own I guess.

Hi all,
Does anyone else think that the next update should also update the HUD interface to have less cartoon type writing and bubbles etc and change to something more belivable for future space flight?

I think you need to look at what something like the shuttle used, for it's HUD for de-orbit and landing. Buran had an interesting HUD for the avionics as well, from what I understand. So maybe go look at actual sims and see what they are doing. And think about if that matches your assumed "believable".

Because they show what it actually looks like. Then, maybe, refactor your "believable" to align with "actual", and then ponder the important and most relevant term.

"Playable".

Yes, I'd like some colour options and bit more control over what I see; but don't start with the REALISM and BELIEVABLE without actual examples. Because that's awful close to saying "my immersion!" which is a very contextless throw away line.

Not just talking a colour change like people have changed to blue, but something like thinner lines or arrow markers instead of circles. Or at least have an few options in the menu to cycle through.
Im thinking that elite want to be the closest real life space sim around, yet the HUD seems a bit stuck in the 1990's not the year 3304.
Maybe a quick win for frontier.
Hoping to get enought interest from people in this to make frontier consider this.

Im just sick of flying towards big orange circles and big stupid writing. It blocks alot of the view.

Thanks
CMDR Obyoz.

Sorry are we playing the same game, "cartoon type writing" and "bubbles"?

I like the interface, which looks a lot like the original Elite interface from 1984, but I'm always down for more customization options.

One size can fit all, rarely does it fit all comfortably.

The way it works at the moment; it's like BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Alfa Romeo all buy their HUD interfaces from a single manufacturer; which makes no sense in a competitive market.
So I'd definitely like to see, for example, a more luxurious-orientated HUD for the Gutamaya line; more mechanical/mining-industry type for Lakon Type-series; more combat focused HUD's for our combat-focused ships and so on.

I would like the colours of some text changing depending on the background. Like when approaching a bright planet the Lat and Lon coordinates are almost invisible. It would be nice if the colours would turn dark when the background is bright and vice versa.

I would like a lot more command consoles to fill the large space on the bridge of the Anaconda, with constant moving functions when the ship is operating, like wise to all the ships.

Making the writing smaller would be a nightmare for VR users.

Why? I have a bunch of games and sims in VR, don't see an issue if your card is capable of cranking up the HMD & SS quality.

Am in agreement with the OP, an option to have less chunky text and symbols would be a great improvement.

What HMD setting are you using? Try setting it to 2 if your gpu can handle it, crystal clear visuals in VR

Nice to see some people still have their crystal balls intact.

As for amount of space it takes in screen is really debatable. If you are using head look or VR or EDTracker...not so much, it is just at the center of your view. If you restrict yourself to ahead view then it might be an issue with time though.

It is not that you can't do worse though. See some SC ship cockpits from their 3.0 alpha ;)

As for customization - it is something I can support, but only if FD have time to work on this. But I support calls for color theme changes (so it doesn't break holographic display) and rearrangement of elements (to suit different play styles better).

When in ship outfitting I would prefer it if the text were more visible.
For instance if I look at my FSD and select 'view modification' I have to get right up close to my TV to see the blue text.
Some of the text in my Cutter is totally unreadable. So a more opaque background on some screens would be good.

The HUD change I'd really like to see is a 'Vertical and Lateral Speed Indicator': I would suggest a circular instrument to the right of the scanner, mirroring the Target Direction Indicator on the left, and using either a dot or vertical and horizontal bars to show your current velocity components in those directions.

Keep in mind that not everyone can play in 1080p or better. When I begun to play in 720p most text was hardly readable ...

less cartoon type writing

Can you explain what you mean by carton type writing? Perhaps provide a screenshot pointing out an example. Because I don't see any cartoon type text. I have a lot of issues with the game's UI, but the style of the text in the HUD is not one of them.

i mean the big orange circle with the accompanying description bang in the middle of the screen. It is blocking my vision.

You know you can turn off the HUD with Ctrl-Alt-G? Obviously not for the whole journey but at least when it's blocking the view of whatever it is you want to look at.

Cartoony style writing.

Do you mean the ridiculous letter "Bobble heads" that look like kids fridge magnets?

Yeah, I would like those to be burned in a garbage fire myself.
