Next logical ship choice after a Type-7 ?

I'm trading in a Type-7 but miss the thrill of the hunt.
What's the next logical step up from a Type-7, the Python ?
I've seen the Clipper but don't really want to align to the Empire for it and it looks like a barge.

Is is easier to keep the T-7 and buy a second ship or reach for the Python which is an all rounder but a fair bit away in terms of trading for it (a week's worth of trading at this rate I think) ?

I know about insurance and maintenance costs so that's not a factor, I wouldn't buy into a larger ship until I had the funds to keep her going.

The big question is what do you want to DO next? If you want to get into a bigger ship for a multi role, then definitely a Python. If you enjoy trading, then a type-9 is definitely the way to go. of course, you could always grind away in the 7 until you have a small fleet of ships ( what I am doing now). One for mining, one for fighting, etc.

If you want to fight and trade at the same time it's the Python.

I've gone bounty hunting with a bunch of rares or 200T of consumer tech in the hold and never worried about dying in the Python. The shields on that ship are monstrous and the amount of firepower packed in real close together hardpoints just melts smaller ships and 2-3 shots other Pythons and Anacondas once you get their shields down.

You can also run the Python with a 3A shield and 284T of cargo if you feel like getting your trade on. It still has overwhelming firepower and anything that interdicts you just melts if they are Asp or smaller.

For VERY short haul trading, the Type 9 is without peer.

However I got so sick of it I went back to the Python. 276t, class 4 shields, decent enough jump range, good weapon load. Pure joy....

If you are a trader its the T9. The Python would just be a 5.5million loss on the way to it and at best end up neutral in cost in between.

I plan to be in a T7 only as long as it takes to trade up to an Imperial Clipper (in a trading configuration). Why? Because a trading Clipper can carry nearly as much cargo as a T7, but is a much sweeter ride.

It's the same as the (IMO no-brainer) decision to upgrade from a T6 to a trading Asp as soon as possible. It's a loooonnngggg slog from T6 6o T7, but that slog is made much more enjoyable by quickly trading in your T6 for an Asp. Nearly same cargo capacity but much more enjoyable flying.

It's like this:

Sidey > Hauler
Swap from Hauler to trading Cobra ASAP (20% of the grind to T6)
Trade in Cobra till you can afford T6 (80% of the grind to T6)
---now you can upgrade your Cobra to A-rated for combat---
---you can easily afford now to buy a pimped-out A-rated Viper too---
Swap from T6 to trading Asp ASAP (20% of the grind to T7)
Trade in Asp till you can afford T7 (80% of the grind to T7)
---now you can upgrade your Asp to A-rated for combat---
Swap from T7 to trading Imperial Clipper ASAP (20% of the grind to T9)
Trade in Clipper until you can afford T9 (80% of the grind to T9)


Alternate endings:

Trade in Clipper until you can afford Python, and stop at Python.

:) I went from T6 - T7 , only to realize at the time, I didn't have money to afford cargo (without building more money for 20+ traderuns). Went Asp for a while 'til I could afford the Imperial Clipper, I skipped the T7 , and as a trader?

The Imperial Clipper's not that bad, 248 tonnes of cargo (or 240 with a tiny too weak Shield / or docking computer.
Shieldless however, make sure you're -very- careful entering stations as repair costs are killer.
The Imperial Clipper was my dreamship :)

You can fix a T7 with corrugated iron and silver foil, whereas the Imperial Clipper needs that new-fangled technology.

You can fly a T7 without shields and the extra cargo MORE than makes up for the tiny repair costs. The same is not true of his Imperial Clipped-ness.

This equation means that on the road to the T9, the loss on the T7 and the Clipper both makes buying the Clipper detrimental.

Compare these two shipyard specs for a "trading" Clipper versus a T7.

Summary:
Clipper has more cargo (232 versus 216)
Clipper has more shield strength (77 versus 49) (http://i.imgur.com/1FL7I48.png)
Clipper has more jump range fully laden, fully fueled (16.7 Ly versus 16.6 Ly)
Insurance cost for both ships is essentially the same (1.5 million for Clipper versus 1.2 million for T7)

Clipper costs only 5 million more than the T7, so you could sit in a T6/Asp for just 5 more hours (assuming you have a good milk run that nets you roughly 1 million per hour) and move straight from the T6 to a Clipper.

And which do you think flies better? Which would you prefer to sit in for the grind to T9/Python?

Edit: and if you're paranoid about running a 4D shield generator on the Clipper (which IMO is perfectly fine for docking "bumps") because the Clipper's mass is just slightly over the max for a 4D shield, then you can always swap around to this config:

Which drops your cargo to 200, but enables your shield max to match your fully laden cargo/fuel mass.

Have the T7, also will when I need get a viper or even an eagle to fool around in. Park the T7, buy a nice new Viper, kit it out, kill some guys. Sell the Viper. Move on to the next good trade system. I'm a freaking space gypsy!

Clipper is a rank reward, it's supposed to be Baron and above I think, but doe to a bug it was somewhat lower. Not sure if fixed.


I went from Type 7 to Type 9, and am now saving for a Python on the side. What I should have done is to have gone from type 7 to Python, and then saved for a Type 9 flat out from there (all good pilots need both in the end ) but aside from unfortunate events I'm making good progress towards a kitted Python.
