Next ship up from a Cobra

ASP or the Vulture, I got the vulture first and fitted it for BH with just a touch of explortation (fuel scoop for longer travel and advanced discovery scanner for extra money while traveling and too look for RES'). Vulture is a class 5 ship with class 3 hardpoints, this gives it the ability to pretty much poop on any NPC ship you come into contact with. I'm going to buy an asp next exclusively for exploring.

A-spec Cobra is about 15 million? You're not too far from a clipper which is fast, a load of storage and fun to fly. There are some compromises such as large pads only and hard points not in the best place but it would do you fine up to the Python and is better than the type 7 in every way in my opinion

Cobra/Asp/Clipper/Python/Anaconda, these are the best ships of ED

the ASP lack speed, so if i were you i would wait till i have 30 million and directly go to the clipper

I did just that, the clipper feels like a super-cobra to me. If you like the cobra you will love the clipper :)

There is a known price gap for ships between the asp and above, you get the asp for 6 million. The next ships up are the T7 for 17 million or the Clipper for 22 million, there basically isn't any other ship. The vulture is there but it's a similar price to the ASP but combat only really. So you do have choices from the cobra. You can to T6 and trade, Vulture and combat or ASP and anything. Its after that group of ships where you get a massive grind and gap to the next ships. Not to forget that the clipper needs baron rank to use it too. FD need to sort this price point out asap.

Definitely the ASP, but I didn't sell my Cobra. I fully combat kit it and earn enough dough for a Lakon 6 before selling it 2 weeks later to get ASP.

However the real grind starts from ASP towards Python~

I find that I keep returning to the Cobra. If I'm starting from a clean save, my first milestone is to get into a Cobra. I flew an Asp for a little while, and it's a very nice ship, but I end up missing the speed. That, and the Asp is an enormous ship. I prefer the compact feeling of the Cobra. I've flown T6s, Vultures, etc., and I still prefer my Cobra. Oddly, it never used to be a favorite of mine. The hardpoint placement is pretty wonky, and it could really benefit from another utility hardpoint or two. The shields are weak, and while the hull is decently strong, once those shields drop, it's time to scoot. Luckily, nothing scoots better. The ship has really grown on me, as I've flown it more and more.

I took a page from another CMDR and outfitted mine for pure speed. 315 cruise with four pips to engines, and 452 boost, with a hair over 20ly laden range. With 40t of cargo space, she'll make a good smuggler or rares trader, if I ever get around to doing either. The Cobra is kind of an 'end game' ship for me. There are objectively better ships, of course, but subjectively I haven't flown another that feels quite as well put together, all factors considered. I'm hoping the Diamondback evokes similar feelings...

Good luck in your search, Commander.
