Next Update = 2020

They spent two years of 100 people on Horizons. I think all in all Horizons turned out pretty bad and fell way short of what it was supposed to be. They either need four years, 200 people, or 100 different people to deliver something worth waiting for.

Some of Horizons was good, some very good, some pretty bad. Alas most was developed at the wrong time when they should have been concentrating on expanding the core gameplay areas and planetary gameplay instead.

Yeah pretty much.

The best parts were delivered at the beginning when David Braben was still front and center presenting every new thing, demoing it and fielding questions about it. And who knows how long they had been working on planetary landings prior to that reveal.

Everything in the subsequent two years has been a disappointing hack job, with some notable exceptions in the form of graphics/texture tweaks and polishing passes on existing play mechanics; and even the best of the best additions are themselves of questionable or mixed quality.

Not one thing has been delivered in a polished authoritative fully-functional and fully thought-out state, not one. And when I say that I am saying nothing has been released, or in most cases ever subsequently UPDATED, to such a level of functionality and coherence that it can stand side by side with other mainstream videogames.

I see no obvious reason to think that any of this will change or get better, but maaaaybe the added freedom and security of developing outside of the public eye for two years will enable the production of something better than what has come before in the same time frame with the same resources?

I feel lucky, I've finally hit the acceptance part of grief, will probably stop haunting these forums soon (ish). I just can't see the game ever getting better than it is. They had a chance with 3.3 and fluffed it. Again. The only change to Elite Dangerous over the next two, five or ten years is going to be staff turnover.
It was fun learning the mechanics but that's all there is (and pretty scenery but I never wanted to be a tourist).

And no, you can't haz my stuff - they might pull a rabbit out of the hat in two years (in which case I will gladly eat the hat).

Fact: Bugles come in sour cream and black pepper flavour.

See; I knew I could add value to this topic.

They have Reese's and Caramel flavors, too. The Reese's Bugles are dangerous. I devour them so fast, I fear for anything else that happens to move into the vicinity of my mouth. Gotta do a head count on the cats after.

I think they're working on other stuff and giving it the big 'un about ED development.

Approximately 300 of Fdev's 422+ staff are devs. Approximately 100 of those work on ED (unless you think they're consistently lying about it, and put on a pantomime for these guys). This despite them having 6 franchises on the go now. Of the live franchises ED has better long-term support than their smash hit JWE.

Short Response:

You're probably wrong about this ;)

Nope. By then, you ll have received enough punishment from the 100 devs that work 100% on ED, you won't be needing me.

I mean, the waiting for solid flagship content isn't funny. The mixed bag of Seasonal deliveries hasn't been funny. Hell, the outcome of this dev run might be funny, in a bad way ;)

But what makes me smile right now is hearing guys like you, who've rightly complained about the beats of the deliveries to date, complaining as they try an alternate delivery model that might actually improve on past mistakes.

Short Response:

You're gonna complain whatever happens Maro ;)

Punishment?
Yep. Thats the word that comes in mind when believing words like "exciting" and "winter is coming" and you receive multi-crew and an optional invasion. Now what do you think phrases like "new era" and "the most authentic, ambitious, and expansive evolving space game in the world", can do to you?

You're gonna complain whatever happens Maro ;)

You are probably right, but its not gonna be on me.

Take a look back at power play state, multicrew, optional thargoids, qcq, horizons lasted 2 years instead of 1, carriers cancelled, codex not having our passed discoveries, gnosis fiasco and so many others.. and lets not talk about bugs or how long it takes to fix them IF EVER.
The guardian booster went live and taken down three times to eventually be fixed after how long? A year maybe, Jesus Christ. And it was something that needed some numbers tweaking in the backend, not a a re-design thing that could take months.
The cif rewards missing from missions? Got fixed and re appeared so many times, that made me think this game is skynet.
Only a miracle on their side can prevent the complaints. When i see it, i ll believe it.
