Nice touch FD!

Bit of programming coolness tonight I have never seen before after 21 months of playing.
Never seen as I try to avoid damage and gravitate toward ships with a great view - looking at you Lakon my old friends. And we're still waiting for that T9 buff Sandro.

Anyway load up with precious metal in my TradaConda and, preparing to undock and leave, when I see a Beluga also undock to my front. Disliking the multitude of Belugas always blocking the slot I decide to be slick and jump on my newly acquired 7A Thrusters to blow by him and get out first.

Unfortunately my judgement of speed, distance, and timing was poor as he rose quickly and slammed into the bottom of my ship dropping my shields a bit but not my high speed. The underneath impact pushed me up, above the slot, and I slammed into the station wall at high speed finishing my shields and dropping my hull to 86%.

Amusing (I guess!?!) but not the cool part. Never having been damaged in a ship I can see a lot of, i.e. the big nose section of the 'Conda I was treated to a large spark and smoke display from my front part of the ship that had hit the wall. And every several seconds afterward I was treated to assorted sparks and puffs of smoke from the damaged area. And, though in the damaged area, these sparks were from a different spot and quantity each time. The time interval got longer and longer but it continued until I got repairs.

Sorry for the long post but it surprised me and I thought it was pretty cool. Nice work FD.

Anacondas had the extended damage model from day one.

Sadly it's the only ship that has it.

And probably will be the only ship that have it, as frontier hasn't said a word about extended damage etc. since Anaconda was added or made any of the new ships released after 1.0 have extended damage model. Probably took too much effort to make it and they decided that it wasn't worth the development time and cost.

True, it's on the list how far down we don't know.

Ah. I wasn't aware that this display was a "special event" so to speak.
Thought I was pretty knowledgeable about the game but never heard of a "Extended Damage Model" before.
Hopefully I won't have the show again anytime soon!

Oh gents, how to get all maudlin in a lovely thread ;)

For what it's worth these bits of concept art suggest modelled hull damage is in their future plans...

Unless we're all supposed to fly Anacondas by then :D

That concept art looks nice. Future plans for spacelegs EVA repair perhaps with skill points. Controllable drones or skimmers to initially access damage to outside structures of ships or buildings. Something for like season 8 plans "far off".

Smoke, Sparks, flashing yellow caution lights, whole strips of armor peeling back from the prow. Good stuff.

As I've said before, my 2.4 wish is zero new features, but the fleshing out of all of these good ideas across ED.

One of things I liked about the game was when I was being shot up, taking damage and my windscreen cracked and blew out. It was hectic, but I swear I saw the glass shards fly out and away. That was cool.

This is the 2nd thing today I didn't know about ED! ...

Yes indeed.
Now that you mention it I did forget all about the flashing lights and noise in the cockpit - so much so I had to look several times at my 86% damage readout as I assumed I must be getting ready to "be dead" with all the lights and noise.
And I cannot but agree on your 2.4 wish...

I noted it way back with the 1.0 release.

The lack of the damage models.

It's a great underdog moment in many films when the ship (space, submarine, battleship) is left adrift to die, and they repair and make a comeback.

Curiously right now. Ships just go BOOM, and that's it.

Only if you had an Autofield maitenence could you repair.
Shortly afterwards the launch of the game, the reboot/repair sequence was added allowing the majority of players to get non-functional modules to work to at least limp back to dock.

But all that concept art, EVEN the dev diaries talk specifically about Player being able to move round the ship and see the damage from the inside out.

So......maybe that's when the damage models and repair sequences are to take place, after we have spacelegs.
Meaning superflous updates, like the commander creator and multi-crew are the bridge over to those gameplay moments we all desire.

Ships going boom is a placeholder if you ask me, it doesn't make any sense if they go boom in the future. How would you introduce ship boarding, and also as some mentioned repairing your ship using EVA.

I myself would like to see ships break apart in different ways and even when they go boom not to just be obliterated. It does feel a bit like a placeholder.

The optimism in this thread is admirable. Sadly, damage effects won't bring in any more money for the game, therefore it'll likely never be done. I understand explosions have been improved in 2.3 however.....

Thats a great shame as I personally think it is worth the effort, but thats just me i guess. lol

Often company decisions are wrong, but when the boss decides, well the buck stops there, no matter how wrong he may be. If he makes a profit he`s happy even if he could have made an even greater profit, he`ll never know.

This is why I still fly modern WW2 flight sims- the damage model in those is amazing. I love watching an aircraft fall apart in pieces as I hit it with my guns. Always disappointing when I play something else like Elite and there`s really no damage effects on enemy ships, just flasshes and a bit of a smoky effect.
