No animals from Australia?

I posted about this is the beta and with the full release my concerns have been confirmed. Koalas and Kangaroos are found in most zoos around the world and it would have been nice to see them in the base game, and from a conservation point of view koalas and especially Tassie Devils are important because they are both considered endangered here.

I would have liked to have seen at least 1 animal from every continent, and while I know that Antarctica missed out as well, I'm disappointed that there are no animals in the base game that are exclusive to my homeland (Saltys don't count as they aren't exclusive to Oz and I know they've included the eastern brown snake but it's an exhibit animal).

I'm sure there will be a dlc, but having to pay extra for an animal from the continent that I live on when all the others (bar Antarctica) are well represented is disappointing.

Most might be exaggerating a little for those outside Australia....

This. I just looked it up: Canada has only one zoo in the entire country that has koalas. I then looked for in the US, and found this on one zoo page:

"Koalas are native to the eucalyptus forests of southeastern and eastern Australia, and they are an uncommon animal found in zoos. Only 10 large zoos, located on the east and west coasts and large cities in Ohio, care for Koalas. "

I mean, koalas definitely aren't all that common but... I can say with certainty that kangaroos and wallabies are relatively common in the United States, though.

Still. As been said numerous times: Some sort of Australia-focused DLC is probably coming at some point, given how glaring a gap it is (and frankly, I suspect it will come with a new theme set, enrichment items, foliage, building pieces, etc. in addition to new animals).

I get that people are disappointed by the lack of this or that animal in the base game. They will come. As far as Oceania goes I would actually take this as an encouraging sign. I am sure we will see a dedicated expansion with lots of unique marsupials, maybe even a montreme!, plus lots of new thematic material. Plus I would argue that Europe is actually the most poorly represented continent (again excepting Antarctica). And the developers were from Europe, so make of that what you will.

Caveats:
1. The gray wolf (Canis lupus) occurs across the entire Northern Hemisphere (North America, Europe, Asia). For the sake of this list I have grouped it with North America, mainly because by Frontier calling it the Timber Wolf I thought they were referring to a specific subspecies. It wasn't until I drilled down that I realized that hadn't specified a specific subspecies. Given how widespread this species is I found it off that they didn't specify a subspecies. The brown bear which has a similar distribution, they not only specified a subspecies, they have included two different ones. And the Asiatic black bear, which is not that widely distributed to start, they further restricted to the rather obscure subspecies of Formosan black bear.
2. I placed the Saltwater crocodile under Oceania. I know you have already argued against that classification, but it really fits better here than anywhere else. And I do believe that many of us, none Aussie's, associate this animal with Australia. Thank you Steve Irwin!
3. I classified the Galapagos tortoise under South America, but it almost feels like a cheat to credit this as a South American animal.
4. I do agree that Frontier could have used a little more balance when it came to selecting animals (over 50% of exhibit animals are South American, but a distinct lack of habitat species to pair them with), but I just like to think of this as a great opportunity for lots and lots of DLC to fill in the gaps. To be fair most famous zoos have well over 500+ species so of course there are lots of gaps in what we think should be there.

“Well represented”...Europeans will like to have a word with you :ROFLMAO:

As Vetgirl said, we only have the gray wolf, and only because it’s native from several continents. Most probably it’s not even the European one!

I know Australia “deserve” more representation than Europe, considering it’s unique and interesting fauna, but please don’t act like it’s the only continent left behind. At least we know almost for sure that Antarctica and Australia will get DLC. Europe? Not so likely.

Great overview, VetGirl!

Their future plans for DLC is quite apparent, imo - and they can deny as often as they want, that there are very detailed plans already in the drawer ... ;)

... Europe? Not so likely.

I can a) not belive this or b) would be very sad, if it would be true.
I wrote this multiple times already. Only because many people are used to European animals and therefore find them less exotic and "boring" doesn't mean, Europe actually has less valid candidates for a DLC.

Question - is the greater flamingo not listed as a European species in Planet Zoo? Because they breed in at least three European countries (Spain, France and Italy) and have a European population of 15,000-35,000 breeding pairs. They definitely should be listed as such.

I'm wondering about critters from Australia ,in the soundtrack there is a track called "Echidna Round" ,an Echidna for those that don't know is an Australian Spiny Ant Eater! ,why have a track in the Score and not have Echidna's show up sometime in a patch or dlc?

They also live in Germany. I've seen a wild Colony of Flamingos a few Years ago

To be honest, I believe planet zoo was originally patented as Planet Safari or something like that. I'm not surprised with the amount of African animals, however, I would have loved to see more variety in animals around the world to be honest.

The base game is clearly focused around Afrika and Asia. Other continents Will follow in time.

In the end every user will have one of his favorite animals behind a paywall.

If we are talking common animals missing. I want otters!

But i would like to have koala's and Kangaroos as well! 🐨

Most likely Australia and a marine theme (dolphins, etc) will be a DLC

I think/hope some Australians animals will be added in a DLC in the next 2 years..
Hopefully a kangaroo will be among the first DLC animals...

But Marine, i wouldn't count on that one.. A lot of people who played ZT/ZT2 expects this, but nowadays expansions aren't that common anymore (compared to 10-20 years ago)
Just DLC who use similar game-mechanics as the base game..

Nothing is confirmed by devs, so most likely = hopefully

Yes not every biome/continent has animals yet... didn't see really European ones eigther 🤷‍♀️... they sure have a plan. Flamingos are not a typical german animal, sry... what you saw is problably very rare here, they mostly were on transit somewhere else (maybe to breed).

I hope we do get a european DLC, with things like lynx, ibex, our european wolf, which is slightly smaller and more reddish. Also Chamois, my favourite of the goat species, and maybe otters and pine martens (my favourite martens) too
AND Foxes, lux, deers, european racoon, beaver, wild boar, hermelin, dormouse - we have a rich amount of birds too wild goose, hawk, stone eagle, eagle owl... and many more. My list would be big only for Germany 😂

I agree wholeheartedly on the need for more diverse regional representation. Australia and South America are ripe for expansion! (2 habitat animals representing the continent that is the home of the world's most biologically diverse ecosystem is a bit of a meh).
