No imagination from FD on new ship design!

?!?... I'm anything but disappointed and I do not think the designs lack imagination on the contrary the designs add to the ED universe making it more varied and far more believable then add in a load of completely new shaped vessels that have no connection to the existing designs

Seriously the Official forums come across so negatively to me it really puts me off visiting moan moan moan threads every time so little constructive debate on anything... total zum kotzen

Why would you want that, just for the looks? Fly a FAS if you like the flight characteristics that much, and deal with the lesser looks. Whats wrong with a world of choices and their concequences?

What is wrong in this particular case of ship stats vs looks vs personal taste is that the combination of all 3 is basically random. A dice is rolled that says "you will hate the look of the ship that suits your playstyle". For the next person the dice is rolled and says "your preferences in style and function exactly match this ship which is also an apex predator."

There is no choice, just randomly one guy may feel screwed, another guy couldn't be happied. Ziljan's idea was to make everyone happy, not the few lucky ones for which the stars align properly or who don't care at all about certain aspects.

Maybe they could produce concept art of amazing looking ships and people could buy them to help out with the development costs to get them in game?

Nah, that's crazy, nobody would buy that...

I'm afraid i don't understand.
So far no one argued that the variants should look completely different and have no connection to their parent designs.

And yes, there are many critical discussions on the forum and bar a few detractors they are mostly constructive, insightful and often creatively inspiring.
And more often than not, negativity stems from those, who bemoan all that moaning while moaning incessantly about that themselves.
Quite ironic.

So chime in, present your arguments and discuss with us.
But please don't try to shame discerning conversations just to "keep the forum nice and quiet."

I can sort of understand their approach with ship variants.
It leaves them with the option to make any new designs exclusive content as part of a season.
Not saying that they will, but now that they've forfilled their 30 ships promise they can.

Now, if you think this was not the inspiration for this ship, well, there is little else I can do to convince you :)

Da da da, da da da, da da, da, da da da da....

Face it, the Federation is an evil Emire in all but name... Fact :)
No way!
Im pretty sure they were inspired by this:

I haven't seen the new ships yet, can someone post some links to pictures if they exist please.

I will watch the live stream later this week but I'd like to see what all the moaning is about.

I think the ships are a great addition to the game. There are always versions of a creation. Ranging from cheap and affordable to expensive and better quality. Or different niches which the versions are made to be better at. Example the Asp Explorer which is a fine ship for the explorer niche. I think versions are a great addition to add ships. I could even want to see a Military/police version of the Asp :) Or the Fer-De-Lance.

I can see this complain on most ships, but the Corvette? I look at it, I look at the Conda and I just don't get it.
Agreed, the vette is the only really "unique" ship in the lineup. The cutter can be argued because portions of it, such as the engine placement and look rather unique even if it's overall shape is just a larger start trek voyager version of the clipper.

Beyond simply visual appearance, the 2xc2 2xc1 arament that was already "Common" among existing ships is just repeated across many of the new ships... Not so unique if you ask me

yes the shipyards are present in DDA https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=36 and here you can see an artwork of that (you can see a majestic capital ship class on the way)

http://gamingshogun.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/elite-ImperialWarshipShipyard2.jpg

with the 1.5 update FD confirm the lack of content promised 2 years ago in DDA and come out only with a few re-worked basic ship released more than one years ago.

good work FD!

Drools over the shipyard.

As a side note, i do not believe FD ever promised to release everything in the DDA within one year (even assuming they would implement everything in it). There are many years worth of development to go yet.

Better strap yourself in, its going to be a crazy ride! ;)

I dont see the problem.
There will be new ships during season 2 and I think its safe to guess that most new ships will be free for everyone.

Plus , for me the new ships are cool they make the universe feel more alive , a new cobra and viper have been built (thats like a historical event in universe) the new lakon ship is decent , sure it only for a subset of CMDRs but thats cool.
The cutter and corvette realy make the larger ships more ballanced and will add more fun into the conflicts and CmdrVCmdr (CvC?)

I do think the orca and dolphin are finished and ready but they want to put them out when passanger missions are added and I think thats more than fair.

However I would like some ships to have different HUDs like
Green military for Fed only ships
Blue for imperial
Orange for everyone else

and maybe have options like white , yellow (beta) and so on as in game purchases or store items

I would say I have chimed in and presented my arguments ie the new designs build up on the existing ED adding to it universe making it more believable, as for your not getting the impression that the negative reactions to the new designs was based on that they don't look different from former Designs with quotes of "30 unique ships" and ""Boxes, fins and a giant white whale" flying around,
I have to ask what exactly did you get then the cause of the negativity was?
and as for you thinking I'm on a crusade to shame people to keep the forums nice and quite that's your interpretation of my motivation and I have to say it's quite snide and disparaging, I gave
you a honest opinion of how the forums come across to me.

Oh there is a choice, but again, you don't want to deal with the concequences.

Personally (and I'm not fond of every ship design), I like to come to a decision after carefully weighing pros and cons against one another. Enginering sliders just feel like a win button "to make everyone happy" to me, and renders the whole process of carefully-building-a-ship-that-comes-as-close-to-an-ideal-ship-as-possible pointless. And all because of the looks, a goal that doesn't justify the means. All in my opinion.

Here is the reason that the Cutter looks so fat. It's to contain the Human's within.
This has all happened because the Imperials have become too reliant on their slaves and become very fat themselves due to lack of exercise (the slaves do all the work). Here is your average Imperial and their spouse in their big candy ship:

View attachment 74725

So, when we federals finally get to free your slaves (hopefully), they're all gonna be so fit and so grateful it'll be like a sexy time overdose. It will be....awesome!
Meanwhile, the massed fatty Army of Imperials tries to work out which flap of skin that bit of Pizza disappeared under...urgh, kinda gross, right?
Why you will inevitably lose...

Back on topic, don't judge until you test it. Imperial ships have always aspired to look pretty. It doesn't mean they are incapable though.

+1 Rep for this. Go Federation - fit for purpose!
.
However I do have an issue with this obsession for sticking the cockpit at the back of the ship. What is the reason for this? I can't imagine Boeing or Airbus deciding to stick the cockpit at the back of their next airliner because the "view is better". I'd rather be able to see targets above and below the horizon rather than have the bottom half of the screen filled with ship artwork.

No imagination from people that claim FD have no imagination.

Star trek fed ships all followed a similar desing philosophy.
