No Man's Sky

I'm a PS4 gamer, and I'm insanely excited for Elite Dangerous to release on the PS4. Too excited, perhaps, because I'm looking at No Man's Sky for $23 on Amazon as a way to keep me from going crazy while I wait for Elite to come out.

I had originally written NMS off after reading so many negative reviews, but I have encountered some on this forum who actually like the game. So my question is this - if you like NMS or hate it, why, and how does it compare to Elite Dangerous? Is it worth $23, even if it only serves as a "gateway drug" until ED releases later this quarter?

All opinions are welcome. Thanks!

UPDATE - My apologies if I posted this is the wrong section. This is where I've been "hovering" and have seen people comment about NMS in other threads comparing it to ED. Moderators, please feel free to move this if necessary.

Yahtzee (of zero punctuation notoriety) described NMS as "Baby's first elite dangerous" Having played both he is spot on. NMS is far more aracdey and simplistic than Elite. This isn't a criticism as some people prefer to just jump straight in and not worry about things like landing or docking

When NMS came, i had almost OD'd with elite. And didnt saw howgood it really was..

NMS helped me show what an awesome game elite was.

NMS's idea was good.. the game itself is mediocre.

If you're an Explorer first and foremost, NMS is by far the superior Exploration game. More to do, find and interact with. Albeit at a very slow pace. If the Survival Experience appeals to you, there's also that.

If space flight and combat are your motivators then.pass on NMS. Elite is far superior there, if only there. Just know that with Elite, there will be down times. Lots of waiting to get places.

Hasnt it become a lot more complex with recent updates?

I play it on my PC occasionally, I've never gotten too deep into it but from what I have played I've enjoyed. At the price point you mentioned, right where it should have been at launch in my opinion (and where it was when I bought it in a steam sale) it wouldn't have generated as much hate as it did. It's also been fleshed out quite a bit too what with base building & ground vehicles (that look like a cross between the SRV & Mass effect Vehicles) so I'd say it's worth a punt.

It still isn't what it was hyped up to be, but it's nowhere near as bad as it is made out to be either.

I enjoyed playing NMS.

The difference between the two games is "feeling", the role of the spaceships and activity.

NMS feels lonely in a almost melancholic way. ED is full of activity that makes the player look insignificant.
In NMS the spaceship is just a method to get to a planet. ED is mostly about flying around is spaceships. The flight mechanics in ED are much, much better. The flight mechanics in NMS are rudimentary at best. This alone makes the two games different enough not to be direct competitors.
In NMS you explore planets and - if you want - follow a story. In ED you fly around in a spaceship and do what ever you want.

ED tires to be realistic or at least believable. NMS tries to be more like a living cover of a 50ies SciFi book.

As I said, in my opinion, completely different games.

I'm one of those who play No Man's Sky and happen to like it very much.
As a matter of fact, I actually started playing Elite waiting for No Man's Sky to launch.

So why do I like NMS?

It's 100% pressure-free. You've nowhere to go, nothing you have to do, no timetable to follow. You're simply free to do as much or as little as you like.
The controls are simplistic, which means you can kick back, put your feet up and just enjoy it.
It's bright and colorful (I don't think beige exists in NMS) and full of life of all sorts (to date I've found exactly one completely lifeless world, and it proved to be a treasure-trove of valuable materials).
Each new update brings us more and more - from buildable bases to varied craft to get around with, to who knows what's next - though I'd love to see a submersible vehicle...

It's also quite innovative and rewarding in its own way. It's not Elite, and that's what I like.
Imagine all the dreams of all of Elite's Explorers, in vivid colors with a hint of LSD, and you've landed in No Man's Sky.

Off topic? This will probably be moved to another forum.

I have about 100 hours of NMS under my belt. But it was mostly just to build a base and run through the technicians' stories. The missions were fairly good (better than Elite's, which isn't hard). But got a bit samey towards the end of the story...
There is a subplot where you build a base, hire some staff and do missions for them to give you new blueprints that need stuff.

Now my base is halfway built and I have maxed out all three vehicles, I've put the game down again for a bit.

The base building is undoubtedly fun, though.

NMS is too big for its own good, but I really like it.

I love being able to 'discover' a planet, name it, land on it, jump out of your ship on it, walk around and set foot somewhere (even if just pixels) somewhere no one has gone before.

All the things I want in ED!

Note that the NMS PC version has a lot of player support and mods for enhancing gameplay. These are not available on the PS4 console version. Also might want to read up on how the game ends before completing it as that has been very upsetting for many.

NMS is trash, I wouldn't touch it. Makes Elite look like a masterpiece in comparison. The most that game has going for it is the amount of lies that followed the massive marketing campaign leading up to its release. And the game's grand finale reveal is just ridiculous. It's up there with the Peter-Molyneux-in-a-cube ending of the Curiosity – What's Inside the Cube? game.

But it has nevertheless a couple nice music tracks.
